    Enjoy hundreds of lily flowers at the 58th Annual Lily Show presented by the New England Lily Society. The show will include hundreds of flowers and varieties such as Asiatic, Canadense, Longiflorum, Trumpet Lily, hybrid American species, and the giant Orientpets. The event takes place July 22 and 23 at Tower Hill Botanic Garden, 11 French Drive in Boylston, and is free with admission to the garden.

    Saturday & Sunday, July 8 & 9 – Tower Hill Botanical Tattoo Weekend

    The public is welcome to attend Botanical Tattoo Weekend on July 8 and 9 at Tower Hill Botanic Garden. The event, held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday, is a celebration of plant-inspired tattoos. There will be tattoo demonstrations, vendors, food trucks, children’s crafts, henna artists, face painting, a tattoo art exhibit, live music, temporary tattoos, a collaborative art project, hands-on art workshops, and more. Guests may be inspired by Tower Hill’s gardens, which will be nearing peak summer form, to plan a future botanical tattoo for themselves. Visitors are encouraged to show off their own tattoos at this family-friendly event. The nonprofit destination features formal gardens, woodland trails, a gift shop, lunch cafe, theater, and views of the Wachusett Reservoir.   • Tuesday, August 1 – Thursday, August 3 – Coastal Maine Garden Trip

    DAY 1: Come and join Tower Hill Botanic Garden for our visit to the charming Maine Coast, August 1 – 3! Our first stop is a visit to the very beautiful Fuller Gardens an elegant 1938 formal estate designed by the Olmsted Brothers. This ‘Seaside Gem’ features hundreds of varieties of gorgeous roses, English perennial border, Japanese garden framing a pond and more. Now we continue along the coast with a lunch stop en route, to arrive at Boothbay Harbor to spend 2 nights at the Boothbay Harbor Inn located right on the Harbor, near the footbridge. Enjoy lovely rooms and fabulous views. Welcome Dinner in the Inn’s waterfront restaurant.

    DAY 2: This morning we’ll have breakfast before visiting the Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens, a natural wonder on 250 acres of shorefront in mid-coast Maine. Join our garden docents for a Guided Walking Tour as we stroll through spectacular ornamental gardens, waterfront and woodland trails. Visitors are delighted by the beautiful plantings, impressive stonework, waterfalls, fountains, and scenic views. Enjoy an afternoon at leisure to explore the charming village of Boothbay with its wonderful shops, crafts and exciting harbor front. Farewell lobster dinner at McSeagull’s Restaurant.

    DAY 3: We say goodbye to our friends in Boothbay Harbor and head to Portsmouth, NH. It’s time to explore four centuries of American History through the eyes of the people who lived in New Hampshire’s oldest waterfront neighborhood, Strawbery Banke. Here you can see 40 buildings – most on their original sites – spanning the late 1600s to the mid-1950s. From the spare storefronts of colonial merchants, the elegant Georgian-style mansion of Governor Goodwin, the humble dwellings of early Jewish immigrants, the penny candy counter of the WWII-era Abbott Store, Strawbery Banke tells the stories of a neighborhood over time. We head home with memories of our Maine Coast trip.

    Tower Hill Botanic Garden, 11 French Drive in Boylston, will hold its opening reception for its newest art exhibit, The Language of Flowers, on Wednesday, June 28 from 5 – 7. Explore collage and mixed media art by artists from the United States and around the world.  Free with admission.  The exhibit will run through August 6.   • Wednesday, June 14, 6:00 pm – 8:30 pm – Wall-mounted Clay Bud Vase Workshop

    Students enrolled in this Tower Hill Botanic Garden workshop on Wednesday, June 14 from 6 – 8:30 will create their own piece of pottery starting from scratch with a raw piece of clay. The clay slab will be molded into a one of a kind bud vase for the wall by the students and designed using texture either by adding clay or sgraffito (scratching/scraping away). Once the sculptural component is complete, the students will then paint their piece using underglazes. The pieces are then brought back to the artist’s studio where they are bisque fired, clear glazed and then fired again. Upon completion, the pieces can either be picked up at Tower Hill or the artist studio in West Boylston. The ceramic process can take between 4-6 weeks, sometimes much less.

    Becky O’Brien, Professional Ceramic Artist, from RJ ARTS Pottery & Lessons, living in West Boylston, is certified in art education, teaching ceramics in studio and doing clay workshops for years in many settings-teaches students from scratch how to create their own piece of pottery.   • Sunday, June 11, 1:00 pm – 4:00 pm – The Wonderful World of Basils

    On Sunday, June 11, from 1 – 4 at Tower Hill Botanic Garden, 11 French Drive in Boylston, explore the fascinating and delicious world of basils with Betsy Williams. There are dozens of varieties of culinary basil: basils with huge leaves, basils with tiny leaves, basils from Asia, Italy and Greece, tall elegant basils, purple and variegated basils. There are basils that smell like cinnamon, cloves, lime and lemon: there is even a basil that smells like black walnuts. Learn the long, curious history of basil, its magical and medicinal associations and how it became America’s favorite culinary herb. We’ll smell and nibble different types of basil, discuss its growing requirements, how to use it in the kitchen and ways to preserve it. Students will enjoy a tasting of basil butter, vinegar, sauce and wine. Each person will plant 3 10″ pots of three varieties of basil to take home and enjoy during the warm days of summer.

    Betsy Williams teaches, lectures and writes about living with herbs and flowers. A gardener and herb grower since 1972, Betsy trained as a florist in Boston and England. She combines her floral and gardening skills with an extensive knowledge of history, plant lore and seasonal celebrations. Betsy is the author of several books on the uses and stories of herbs and flowers. She has appeared on the Discovery Channel and greater Boston cable stations as well as local and national radio talk shows.     Walk in the footsteps of the Worcester County Horticultural Society founders – see where they lived, what they grew, and learn about the early days of the Society. Meet at the Worcester Common for the approximately ¾-mile walk. Co-sponsored our with Preservation Worcester. The walk will be held at two different times and dates – Thursday, June 1 from 6 – 7, and Saturday, June 24 from 2 – 3. Free for members of sponsoring organizations, $10 for nonmembers.
