  • Friday, May 7, 6:00 pm – 7:30 pm – The Last Minute Beginner’s Guide to Vegetable Gardening, Online

    This free online Berkshire Botanical Garden course for those new to growing their own vegetables will introduce the basics of growing a vegetable and herb garden. Soil preparation, transplanting, direct sowing and harvest will all be all covered. Students will receive resources and knowledge they can use for years to come.   The class will be held May 7 beginning at 6 pm. Register at www.berkshirebotanical.org.

    Bridgette Stone is the Director of Education at Berkshire Botanical Garden. She has been a gardener, farmer and educator for over 12 years and brings a passion for experiential learning, home-scale food production and sustainable gardening practice to her work with BBG. 

  • Saturday, April 27, 10:00 am – 1:00 pm – Transplanting Shrubs and Planting Small Ornamental Trees

    Learn by doing in this April 27 Berkshire Botanical Garden hands-on shrub and tree planting/transplanting workshop led by arborist Ken Gooch. All aspects of successful planting will be demonstrated, and participants will assist in transplanting a multi-stem shrub and planting a small tree. Learn how to successfully transplant shrubs through correct timing,placement, and techniques designed to create minimal disturbance and ensure smooth transition to a new site. Consider the differences between bare-root, container-grown, or balled-and-burlapped trees, and understand the importance of siting.

    Ken Gooch is the Forest Health Program Director for the Massachusetts Department of Conservation and a Massachusetts Certified Arborist. He is a long-time instructor for the Berkshire Botanical Garden.

  • Saturday, April 22, 10:00 am – 12:00 noon – Seed Starting Workshop

    This April 22nd hands-on workshop at Elm Bank, led by Mass Hort Seed to Table Educator Hannah Traggis, will have you start your own seeds to take home for your garden. Through a series of demonstrations, you will learn the proper care and handling of a variety of young seedlings. You will also practice transplanting to promote the sturdiest and healthiest seedlings! Seeds and materials will be provided. Feel free to bring your own selection of seeds to plant. The class will be held from 10 – 12.

    Hannah Traggis manages Mass Hort’s edible gardens throughout The Gardens at Elm Bank. She oversees the Seed to Table vegetable garden which produces more than 4,000 pounds of produce each year to support our educational mission and local food pantries.
