  • Thursday, March 27, 1:00 pm – 2:15 pm – Free Tree Walk: Redwood Library, Newport Art Museum, & Old Beach Avenue

    The Newport Tree Conservancy’s first monthly tree walk of 2025 will tour the grounds of the Redwood Library and the Newport Art Museum, and venture down Old Beach Avenue before looping back to Bellevue. NTC Living Collections Manager Joe Verstandig will be discussing some early spring tree phenology, bask in the glory of some incredible specimen beech and oaks, and admire early flowering woody plants. Please dress appropriately for walking on the street and on grass. The March 27 program is free, but register at www.newporttreeconservancy.org

    Join Polly Hill Arboretum docent Nancy Weaver for a special tour to celebrate Polly Hill’s birthday. In memory of Polly Hill and her love of plants, Nancy will tell stories of Polly and highlight some of her favorite places around the Arboretum. Please meet at 10 am at the Visitor Center.  The Polly Hill Arboretum is located in West Tisbury on Martha’s Vineyard.     The Lincoln Garden Club is promoting a Tree Tour with champagne reception on June 4, 2017, from 1 – 7. A booklet with guiding maps and information on historical sites and trees will lead people through several historical areas in Lincoln, such as the Lincoln Public Library and its genetically unique twisting catalpa tree.     On Saturday, June 6, from 10 – noon, tour the grounds of the Berkshire Botanical Garden, view the exceptional and diverse tree collection and learn about these gentle giants and their importance in the landscape. Following the tour, join Massachusetts Certified arborist Melissa LeVangie for a tree-climbing demonstration. Massachusetts Certified Arborist Tom Ingersoll will share with participants the principles of arboriculture and the care of trees, including assessment of species, shape, size and cultural requirements required to maintain a happy, healthy personal forest. This walking tour will cover the importance of selecting the “right plant for the right place” as well as the challenging relationship between trees, turf and the rest of the built landscape. Following the tour, watch an up-close demonstration of professional tree climbing. Enjoy the morning by walking, talking and admiring some of nature’s most magnificent gifts and watch these talented arborists as they ascend into the trees. This program is for all tree huggers. Join Polly Hill Arboretum collections and grounds manager Tom Clark for this informative and fun walking tour of the many glorious mature trees of Edgartown. In the midst of the mantle of green that envelops downtown Edgartown, the hydrangeas and picket fences, many unique and fine specimen trees await discovery. Expect the famous Pagoda Tree and so much more. Call 508-693-9426 to pre-register and for carpool and meeting location. $20/$10 for PHA members.

  • Monday, September 24 – Wednesday, September 26 – Landscapes of Nantucket

    Join the Polly Hill Arboretum for this visit to our island neighbor to explore the Nantucket landscape.  While Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket share similar ecosystems, we will also discover some diffferences in the landscapes.  With the help of colleagues at the Nantucket Land Council, we will visit a few conservation properties and learn about land preservation on Nantucket. Downtown Nantucket is also home to some majestic street trees, including several American elms.  The trip will include a walking tour with Nantucket’s tree warden, to learn about the legacy of these historic trees.  Two private garden visits, arranged by the Nantucket Garden Club, are also included in the tour.  The tour price includes round trip airfare from Martha’s Vineyard to Nantucket via Cape Air, two nights at the Jared Coffin House, all ground transportation on Nantucket, and a $100 tax deductible contribution to the Polly Hill Arboretum.  $694 per person for queen sized bed (based on double occupancy), $660 per person for full sized bed (based on double occupancy), and $510 per person for room with one twin bed.  Tour is limited to 18 people, so sign up early by calling 508-693-9426, visiting www.pollyhillarboretum.org, or emailing karin@pollyhillarboretum.org.

    Spend an afternoon at the Arnold Arboretum in Jamaica Plain with Michael Dosmann, curator of living collections, as he discusses the natural history of many of the Arboretum’s notorious nut species.  Mr. Dosmann was a popular speaker at a Garden Club of the Back Bay meeting a few seasons ago, and you will enjoy this walking tour with him.  Dress comfortably with good walking shoes.
