  • Saturdays, December 16, and January 13, 10:00 am – Winter Walks at Polly Hill Arboretum

    In every season the Polly Hill Arboretum on Martha’s Vineyard offers something of beauty and interest to visitors. At this time of year, plants display unique textures, structure, cones, and berries. The Arboretum is offering staff-led winter walks on three Saturdays, December 16 and January 13, beginning at 10 am.

    In order to help prevent the spread of the COVID-19 and RSV viruses, each tour is limited to 12 or fewer adults (no children under 12, sorry). Please do not attend a tour if you don’t feel well, or if you have recently been exposed to someone with a known case of COVID-19. Guides will wear masks, and we ask that all visitors wear masks for the duration of your time on the Arboretum grounds, for the safety of yourselves, other visitors, and our volunteer docents. Please practice social distancing between other visitors and your tour guide.

    To register, visit www.pollyhillarboretum.org. Sorry, we cannot allow groups larger than the allotted number of slots. No children under 12. No dogs. Free for members, $5 for nonmembers.

    Please check your email (the address you signed up with) on the evening prior to your tour to make sure you have not received a cancellation notice. Cancellation may result from inclement weather, or at the discretion of the Arboretum for any reason deemed appropriate by staff.

    If you need to cancel or reschedule, please email info@pollyhillarboretum.org 24 hours prior to your scheduled tour (excluding weekends). This will allow us to fill unused slots or cancel tours that have insufficient registration. We appreciate your consideration in notifying us.

  • Wednesday, June 21, and Thursday, July 20, 5:30 pm – 6:30 pm – Tree Walk with Matthew Noyes

    Horticulturist and Clark Institute of Art Grounds Manager Matthew Noyes leads a walk through the forested landscape of the Clark’s grounds on Stone Hill. Throughout the 140 acres of expansive lawns, meadows, and walking trails, this tour highlights the basics of New England tree identification, ongoing stewardship of the Clark’s grounds, and the sustainability practices in place to preserve the Clark’s natural resources.

    This program is offered on June 21 and again on July 20.

    On Saturday, June 6, from 10 – noon, tour the grounds of the Berkshire Botanical Garden, view the exceptional and diverse tree collection and learn about these gentle giants and their importance in the landscape. Following the tour, join Massachusetts Certified arborist Melissa LeVangie for a tree-climbing demonstration. Massachusetts Certified Arborist Tom Ingersoll will share with participants the principles of arboriculture and the care of trees, including assessment of species, shape, size and cultural requirements required to maintain a happy, healthy personal forest. This walking tour will cover the importance of selecting the “right plant for the right place” as well as the challenging relationship between trees, turf and the rest of the built landscape. Following the tour, watch an up-close demonstration of professional tree climbing. Enjoy the morning by walking, talking and admiring some of nature’s most magnificent gifts and watch these talented arborists as they ascend into the trees. This program is for all tree huggers.   • Sunday, September 30, 2:00 pm – 3:30 pm – Best in Show: 6 National Collections

    Michael Dosmann, Curator of Living Collections at the Arnold Arboretum and past Garden Club of the Back Bay speaker, will lead a walk through the Arboretum on Sunday, September 30, from 2 – 3:30. The Arboretum is committed to growing a diverse and comprehensive collection of plants. In particular, they are growing six important genera for the North American Plant Collections Consortium, a group of public gardens working to conserve plants with the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the American Public Gardens Association. Learn more about the six genera that make up our “national collections,” the importance of preserving biodiversity, and current research using these plants.   • Thursday, May 20, 2:00 – 4:00 pm – The Power and Purpose of Trees: A Walk with Diana Beresford-Kroeger

    The Arnold Arboretum proves the perfect classroom for renegade botanist Diana Beresford-Kroeger. She will lead you among trees from around the globe, describing their subtle and not so subtle qualities that contribute to the environment. Mixing lore and chemistry, fact and theory, Diana will broaden your understanding of the inherent importance of trees to the lives of all on this planet. The walk will take place Thursday, May 20, from 2 – 4, and you should meet at the Hunnewell Building at the Arnold Arboretum in Jamaica Plain. The program is co-sponsored by the Wellesley College Friends of Horticulture and the fee is $25 for Arboretum members and Wellesley College Friends of Horticulture, $30 for the general public.
