  • Sunday, May 5 – Saturday, May 11 – Trillium Week at Garden in the Woods

New England Wild Flower Society celebrates the extraordinary during the fourth annual Trillium Week, May 5-11, 2019 at Garden in the Woods in Framingham, MA. Known for their delicate beauty, trilliums are woodland plants highly prized by both gardeners and conservationists, in part because even in the wild it takes four to seven years for the plants to reach flowering age.

Trillium Week- which also coincides with peak bloom time for many other beautiful spring plants at the Garden- features guided tours, a workshop on propagating trilliums, and an evening of music and craft beer. Several species of trillium will also be available in limited numbers for purchase at the Garden’s shop. For more information about Trillium Week, please visit www.newenglandwild.org.

THE TRILLIUM COLLECTION AT GARDEN IN THE WOODS

The trillium collection at the Society’s Garden in the Woods is the most extensive in New England, with twenty-one of the thirty-one species native to North America, including three of the four species native to the region. It has earned coveted national accreditation by the American Public Gardens Association’s Plant Collections Network, which recognizes the botanical integrity of the collection and the Society’s effective stewardship and management.

  • Saturday, May 14 and Sunday, May 15, 1:30 pm – 2:00 pm – Trilliums

Trillium Week is on at the New England Wildflower Society.  On Saturday, May 14 at Garden in the Woods, come to a demonstration with Dan Jaffe on Dividing Trilliums. Do you want your trillium patch to spread throughout your garden? In this demonstration, Dan will teach you everything you need to know about turning one trillium into many, from which tools to use to how to divide different species. On Sunday May 15, Dan will explore Planting and Caring for Trilliums. Good trillium care begins before you even break ground. He will show you how to select trillium species, prepare a site for planting, and care for a plant once it’s in the ground. Both programs run from 1:30 – 2:00 pm, free with admission. • Tuesday, July 23, 10:00 am – 1:30 pm – A Gardener’s Challenge: Growing Trilliums, Lady’s-Slippers, and Other Complicated Species

Despite their reputation for being difficult to grow, many of our most beloved wildflowers can be grown successfully with a little inside knowledge. Dan Jaffe of the New England Wild Flower Society shares tips about some of the methods used at New England Wild Flower Society to grow such plants as lady’s slippers (Cypripedium), trilliums (Trillium) , trailing-arbutus, (Epigaea repens), and other complicated genera and species. Emphasis is placed on creating the correct growing conditions for these species, allowing the plants to take care of themselves more successfully, without the constant attention that many of these plants are reputed to need. After the Tuesday, July 23 lecture, we walk the Garden in the Woods to see these plants in place. Bring a bag lunch. Special discounts on the featured plants will be available in the Garden Shop that day. The program runs from 10 – 1:30, and the fee is $46 for NEWFS members, $56 for nonmembers. Register at www.newfs.org.
