  • Through Sunday, March 29 – The Bulb Show – POSTPONED

    Berkshire Botanical Garden’s Fitzpatrick Greenhouse becomes a harbinger of spring now through Sunday, March 29, when the public is invited to enjoy hundreds of flowering bulbs in an annual exhibition featuring New England springtime favorites and a collection of South African bulbs rarely seen in the northeast.

    Visitors to the greenhouse will see an evolving collection of blooming plants including traditional New England favorites such as narcissus, tulips and grape hyacinths along with the Garden’s unique collection of South African bulbs.  Grown by collectors for their remarkable late winter floral displays, these bulbs evolved in Fynbos, South Africa’s Cape floral kingdom, considered one of the richest areas in the world for plant biodiversity. Admission is free. The Bulb Show is open weekdays, 9 a.m. – 4 p.m.

  • Wednesday, October 14, 10:00 am – The History of the Tulip and the Tulipmania Movement in 17th Century Netherlands

    Explore the history of this wandering beauty with Ila Cox. The Garden Club of the Back Bay’s October meeting and lecture will be held Wednesday, October 14 beginning at 10 am at The College Club, 44 Commonwealth Avenue in Boston.

    From its cradle in the foothills of the Himalayas, we follow the tulip’s journey over the centuries through Persia, the Ottoman Empire and Western Europe in the 16th century. In the Golden Age of 17th century Holland, the tulip takes on larger prominence as it intersects with the burgeoning Dutch economy. It becomes a principle actor in an economic drama of historic proportion. Tulipmania has direct relevance for our 21st century experience with the inflated values of certain commodities and lack of market regulations. The tulip moved west during the 17th century and was introduced to North America and other colonies. Today Dutch tulip production has become a major commercial success as the tulip is marketed to the world.

    Ila Cox is a plant lover, gardener, garden traveler, and a student of garden and plant history. She studied flower arranging with Sheila McQueen, has been a church flower arranger, owner of The Potting Shed, and is a member of the Andover and Boxford Garden Clubs, former Chair of the Flower Committee of the MFA Associates, and lectures on flower arranging and horticultural topics.

    Come to the 4H Fairgrounds, 51 South Chelmsford Road, Westford, September 24 and 25, for the Middlesex Conservation District Fall Bulb and Perennial Sale – tulips, daffodils, alliums (below), unusual bulbs, iris, perennials and garden supplies (compost bins, bulb fertilizer, kitchen scrap buckets, etc). All items may be ordered in advance through September 4 to ensure best selection.   • Tuesday, October 20, 6:30 – 9:30 – Landscaping and Decorating with Bulbs

    Explore a variety of colorful bulb options you can plant now for a spring display for the mixed flower border or for indoor forcing. You will learn the secrets to growing bulbs outdoors, including when and how to plant, designing for color combination, and resources for quality bulbs. We’ll also explore options for bulbs in shady spots. We’ll go beyond tulips and daffodils to explore bulb varieties that will add interest to your garden, and expand the bulb blooming season with lasting color. Plan this fall for a colorful spring, and then just sit back and enjoy the show.  The class is sponsored by Brookline Adult and Community Education, costs $38, and is taught by Peter Medaglia, owner of Gold Medal Gardens, who traded-in a career in marketing to start his own landscape design and construction firm specializing in intimate urban and suburban gardens.
