  • Saturday, September 24, 2:00 pm – 3:00 pm – My 100 Favorite Begonias

This Tower Hill Botanic Garden presentation is all about begonias. Most come from the far-flung tropical areas of the world, but cultivars abound too. • Saturday, April 2, 9:30 am – 4:00 pm – Creative Flower Photography

Unfulfilled by your flower photographs? Discover your artistic side in this Saturday, April 2 one-day, hands-on workshop at Tower Hill Botanic Garden, 11 French Drive, Boylston, Massachusetts with fine-art photographer Joel Shore of MetWest Gallery. Learn how lighting and composition improves your photos, experiment with iridescent glass and reflections, explore how to get closer to your subject, and discover why seeing less lets you see so much more. Do you have flower photos you love, or ones that disappointed? Bring them in!

A digital single lens reflex (DSLR) camera and tripod are required. A macro lens is strongly recommended. A cable or wireless shutter release is preferred, but your camera’s self-timer will suffice. Point-and-shoot cameras are not recommended unless they allow you to set both the shutter speed and aperture manually. We plan to have a variety of Lensbaby lenses in Canon and Nikon mounts available.

This is an all-day ( 9:30 – 4:30) workshop. For lunch, we recommend Tower Hill Botanic Garden’s own Twigs Café. Alternatively, you can bring your own lunch. The closest fast-food establishment is in Clinton, a 14-mile round-trip drive. Workshop price is $80 for THBG members, $90 for non-members. To register (and this class fills quickly – a February session was sold out before The Garden Club of the Back Bay web site even had a chance to publicize it!) log on to www.towerhillbg.org.

  • Saturday, February 6, 10 am – 2:30 pm – Winter Tree Observations: Deciduous Trees

You may already have taken Carol Govan’s evergreen tree identification class – now move on to deciduous trees.  On Saturday, February 6, from 10 – 2:30, Carol will present a workshop at the Wellesley College Botanic Garden in this program co-sponsored by the Wellesley College Friends of Horticulture and the Arnold Arboretum.  Winter is a great time to identify trees based on their overall structure and twig and bud characteristics. You will begin indoors at the Wellesley College Greenhouse Visitor Center, carefully looking at twigs and other tree parts, discovering family and genus similarities, and examining indicators of the growth cycles of deciduous trees. After lunch Carol will lead you through the Wellesley College Botanic Gardens to identify trees, observing both large- and small-scale details. Bring a lunch and hand lens and dress for cold weather. (Snow date: February 13)
Fee $50 WCFH or Arnold Arboretum member, $65 nonmember.  To register, log on to www.arboretum.harvard.edu.

  • Saturday, October 3, 9:30 – 12 noon – Autumn Beauties: Habitat Gardens in Acton

Fall can be one of the most beautiful seasons in the garden. On Saturday, October 3, from 9:30 – noon, Dori Smith, landscape designer of Gardens for Life in Acton, leads this tour of several gardens designed primarily with native plants to please birds and butterflies, as well as her clients. Native shrubs such as fothergilla and cranberry viburnum glow with autumn color. Winterberries are ripening, and twigs of dogwood are turning crimson. Many of the fall flowers are still blooming. The designer shows you “before” photos of these landscapes, as well as photos taken in different seasons. She discusses the unique challenges, goals and methods of each project. Learn ways to use stone and water to enhance the effects of the plantings. You are welcome to tour the Acton Arboretum  before or after the garden tour. The tour is sponsored by The New England Wild Flower Society, and costs $25 if a NEWFS member, and $30 if a nonmember.  Limited to 20 participants.  To register, log on to www.newfs.org, or call 508-877-7630.
