    Noah Wilson-Rich, Ph.D., founder of Best Bees Company in South Boston, will discuss raising bees in the rural, suburban, and urban habitats of eastern Massachusetts. Wilson-Rich does research to improve honey bee health and also sets up hives in schools for educational purposes. This lecture is the centerpiece of the Somerville Garden Club April meeting, to be held Wednesday, April 10 from 7 – 9 at the Tufts Administration Building, 167 Holland Street in Somerville. All SGC meetings are free and the public is invited to attend. Meetings include club announcements, a horticultural question and answer segment, and a raffle of donated plants and garden-related items. Parking is available, and the building is a short walk from the Davis Square Redline T station. Meetings are on the second floor, wheelchair accessible.   • Monday, September 24 – Monday, October 22, 6:00 pm – 8:00 pm – What’s the Buzz? An Urban Beekeeping Primer

    This Cambridge Center for Adult Education five session class with Mel Gadd (below) on Mondays, September 24 – October 22 from 6 – 8 will give an overview of urban beekeeping, covering a brief history of beekeeping, bee biology, and getting started in urban beekeeping. We will go over the basics of beekeeping, types of bee hives, equipment needed to get started, locating the hive, options for getting bees, starting the hive, first-year activities of the beekeeper, products of the hive, and resources available to new beekeepers, with the ultimate goal of participants being able to start keeping bees on their own next spring.     Get on board with one of the hottest do-it-yourself trends that has The New York Times all abuzz! Let Noah Wilson-Rich, South End resident beekeeper and owner of Boston’s Best Beesâ„¢ dissuade any preconceived notions you may have about bees and give you insight to why they are being threatened. You’ll learn how to pick a location for a hive, set-up techniques, the best way to manage your new army, how to extract honey and creative ideas for your harvest! Every student will make and take home a beehive frame (the structural element that holds the comb within the hive) and a jar of all natural beeswax lip balm, along with a jar of honey that you helped to extract! This Urban Beekeeping class will take place at the Boston Center for Adult Education, 122 Arlington Street, Boston, on Saturday, July 23 from 11 – 2, and the fee to attend is $43 for BCAE members, $50 for nonmembers, with a $10 materials fee.  Register at www.bcae.org or call 617-267-4430.
