  • Thursday, February 25, 7:30 – 9:00 pm – Seedy Night

Bring your seed catalogues to the Natick Community Organic Farm on Thursday, February 25, from 7:30 – 9:00 pm, for an informative evening around the wood stove with Natick Community Organic Farm Assistant Director Jean-Claude Bourrut.  You will talk about variety choices suited for your garden, and will learn to read between the lines of glossy descriptions.  Does “foolproof” mean invasive?  Does “full sun” mean you’d better plant it in Florida?  Does “mildew resistant” mean it will be covered in white powder if you don’t thin 90% of the planting?  The cost for all this information will be $27, and you may sign up at www.bcae.org.

  • Tuesday, September 29, 10 am – 12 noon – Evergreen and Perennial Groundcovers

There are several ways to reduce our lawns and at the same time our reliance on fertilizers and pesticides. On September 29, using the grounds of Tower Hill Botanic Garden, Diane Pappas will show a variety of evergreen and perennial groundcovers that can be utilized in place of lawn and expensive bark mulch. The beds surrounding several gardens contain established colonies of groundcovers that demonstrate their many wonderful qualities. Enjoy year round beauty and significantly less maintenance when you decide to make the switch to living groundcovers.  Fee is $20 for Tower Hill members, $25 for non-members.  Register on line at www.towerhillbg.org.

  • Wednesday, June 24, 6-8 pm – Build a Backyard Butterfly Haven

By adding a progression and variety of easy-to-grow, nectar-rich flowers to your home garden, you can ensure a season-long treat in the form of visiting butterflies. Suzanne Mahler, one of the Garden Club of the Back Bay’s former speakers, is an expert in the subject and she’ll show you how mass plantings of colorful flowers, particularly those tinted pink and lavender, are irresistible to butterflies passing overhead. Butterflies are fragile creatures, and Suzanne will talk about how to ensure your garden is a haven for them. $5 for members of Massachusetts Horticultural Society, $10 general admission.  To register, and for directions, log on to www.masshort.org.
