  • Sunday, July 22, 10:30 am – 12:00 noon – What’s Buggin’ Me?

    Join the Massachusetts Horticultural Society on Sunday, July 22 at 10:30 am for a stroll through the vegetable gardens with Sue Scheufele from the UMass Extension Vegetable Program. The Gardens at Elm Bank are located at 900 Washington Street in Wellesley. We will learn to identify common insect and disease pests, and the damage they can cause to vegetable and herb plants. We will discuss organic management strategies that are available to home gardeners including use of mulches, row covers, bio-based pesticides and more. $15 for Mass Hort members, $25 for nonmembers.   • Thursday, February 13, 7:00 pm – 8:30 pm – Planning a Vegetable Garden from Scratch

    Edible landscapes are beautiful and functional interactive spaces that nourish on many levels. Gardeners build soil and arrange plants, but we can’t control the weather. Trial and error is part of the experience for all levels. Everyone can do it! It’s a meditation on life and this Massachusetts Horticultural Society workshop on Thursday, February 13, from 7 – 8:30 at Elm Bank, 900 Washington Street in Wellesley, will give you the tools to get started right. To locate the garden we will discuss solar exposure and microclimates, testing for lead, and plant options for various conditions. Basic soil science will illustrate the importance of compost in correcting poor soil fertility, structure, and pH. Adam Monroy of Home Harvest will present pictures of custom gardens installed by Home Harvest to inspire the imagination. To close we will talk about building resiliency into your garden through intensive cropping patterns, diverse intercropping, cover crops, and other progressive home gardening techniques that will make your garden work for you!

    Adam Gray Monroy works as a designer, consultant, and builder for Home Harvest installing custom edible landscapes in Metro Boston. With an extensive background in landscape design/build, Adam has earned degrees in horticulture, sustainable agriculture, and landscape architecture. He is passionate about growing food and integrating it into traditional landscape design.

  • Saturday, September 8, 10:00 am – 12:00 noon – Morning in the Vegetable Garden at Blithewold

    Join Assistant Grounds Manager Dan Christina for a morning tour on Saturday, September 8,  of Blithewold’s Vegetable Garden, 101 Ferry Road in Bristol, Rhode Island. These monthly tours are designed to encourage and offer guidance to the home gardener, or anyone who may be interested in producing their own vegetable garden.

    The tours will cover a variety of topics such as high-yield succession plantings, space-saving growing techniques, and tips for engaging young minds using playful structures.   • Saturday, January 28, 2:00 pm – Gardening Mixed Media – Growing Vegetables and Fruit in the Ornamental Landscape

    The Edwardian kitchen garden sequestered behind walls is long gone. Enthusiastic gardeners with limited space and sun exposure unabashedly mix food production within the most ornamental of landscapes, even the front yard. Landscape designer and horticulturist Warren Leach will show how the ‘vegetable patch’ can be transformed, structured within raised beds, provide abundant production, and be the focal point of the landscape, in this free (with admission) Tower Hill Botanic Garden session on Saturday, January 28, beginning at 2 pm at Tower Hill.     Join the horticulture staff at the Berkshire Botanical Garden on Saturday, January 29, from 10 – noon,  for a firsthand look at the wonderful annual flowers and vegetables that will be grown at the Berkshire Botanical Garden in 2011. Instruction will cover sourcing seeds, reading a seed catalog, exploring new annual flowers and vegetables for 2011, and selecting tried and true varieties for the home garden. This program is designed as a roundtable discussion and all questions will be answered. Both annual flower seeds and vegetable seeds will be covered. Tips and techniques for successful sowing and germination will be discussed. Come be inspired and learn how to shop for the best seeds.
