    Thursdays at the Hort will present Susan Hammond, Master Gardener at the Keeper Vegetable Garden, on Thursday, June 20, at 7 pm, at Elm Bank, 900 Washington Street in Wellesley. Vegetable gardening is something everyone can enjoy, from the novice to the experienced gardener. It can be a way to bring fresh food to your table, teach children where food comes from, or even a way to beautify your yard!   • Saturday, March 10, 10:00 am – 12:00 noon – Optimizing the Growing Season in Your Vegetable Garden

    Work with Jessie Banhazl, owner of Green City Growers, a raised bed vegetable gardening company, to learn how to make the most of the New England growing season.  The Tower Hill Botanic Garden class will be held Saturday, March 10, from 10 – 12, and you may register online at www.towerhillbg.org.  THBG member fee is $10, nonmembers $12.  Come prepared to chat about your garden and make a four season plan for producing food all year long.

    How do you avoid flea beetles on your arugula or tomato horn worms on your tomatoes? Wondering when to harvest garlic or how to hard-off winter squash? If these are questions you’re asking then this class at The Berkshire Botanical Garden on Saturday, August 28, from 10 – 12,  is for you. This demonstration will cover how to care for vegetables once the garden is already planted and growing. The focus will be on specific vegetables with detailed information on cultivation, pests problems/control, planting companions, weed control, moisture requirements and how and when to harvest. Take a walk through the vegetable garden for new ideas on what to grow.     Abby Hird, Putnam Fellow at the Arnold Arboretum, will give a three session class in the Hunnewell Building of the Arnold Arboretum on Tuesdays, April 6, 13 and 27, from 6:30 – 8:30 pm.   Learn the where, what, and why of urban vegetable gardening with horticulturist Abby Hird. Raised on a Nebraska farm, educated in horticulture, and now living here in Boston, Abby Hird will talk about her gardening adaptations in the city environment. She will guide you through site evaluation, plant selection, and common problems and possible solutions in raising home-grown food. She’ll also talk about community resources for gardening, ideas for maximizing yield from a small plot, as well as ways to grow food more sustainably. This class is for nascent gardeners and those who have been frustrated by previous run-ins with vegetables.  Fee $60 Arnold Arboretum member, $72 nonmember.
