    Frances Palmer centers her creative life-and daily photo shoots-in an airy studio inside her Connecticut barn. The celebrated potter, gardener, cook and entrepreneur was trained as an art historian, but became obsessed with dahlias after spotting one in a gardening book. Today, growing all flowers is her passion, and they fill her extraordinary pots that have been featured in: The New York Times Magazine, Vogue, Elle Decor, Martha Stewart Living, Architectural Digest and scores of others. Drawing on insights from her debut book, Life in the Studio: Inspiration and Lessons on Creativity, Palmer focuses on what matter most: determination, routine, prioritization, perseverance, and perspective.   • Wednesday, August 9, 7:00 pm – 8:00 pm – Harvest: Unexpected Projects Using Extraordinary Garden Plants

    In their beautifully photographed guide to growing, harvesting, and utilizing 47 unexpected plants, Harvest, Stefani Bittner and Alethea Harampolis encourage gardeners to discover the surprising usefulness of petals and leaves, roots, seeds, and fruit. Turn turmeric root into a natural dye and calamintha into lip balm. Make anise hyssop into a refreshing iced tea and turn apricots into a facial mask. Crabapple branches can be used to create stunning floral arrangements, oregano flowers to infuse vinegar, and edible chrysanthemum to liven up a salad. With the remarkable, multi-purpose plants in Harvest, there is always something for gardeners to harvest from one growing season to the next. Stefani will appear at Tower Hill Botanic Garden on Wednesday, August 9 for a talk beginning at 7 pm, followed by a book signing. Free with admission to the gardens.

    Stefani Bittner and Alethea Harampolis are the co-founders of Homestead Design Collective, a San Francisco Bay Area landscape design firm focused on creating beautiful gardens that provide harvest. Stefani is the co-author of The Beautiful Edible Garden (Ten Speed Press, 2013) and Alethea is the co-author of the best selling books, The Flower Recipe Book and The Wreath Recipe Book (Artisan 2013 and 2014). Stefani and Alethea’s latest collaboration, Harvest, was released by Ten Speed Press in February 2017.     The Gardens of Arne Maynard is the first book on the work of one of the world’s most celebrated and sought-after garden designers working today. Based in Great Britain, Maynard is known for his award-winning gardens at the Royal Horticultural Society’s Chelsea Flower Show and for his many private commissions across the world. Central to his work as a designer is his ability to identify and draw out the essence of a place, something that gives his gardens a particular quality of harmony and belonging. His work has been featured in Architectural Digest, Gardens Illustrated, The New York Times, Garden Design, The World of Interiors, House & Garden, Country Life, The English Garden, Vogue, and many more.     The Boston Committee of the Garden Club of America will hold its Spring 2014 Lecture and Luncheon on Tuesday, April 29, at The Country Club, 191 Clyde Street, Brookline.  Guest speaker Catie Marron, co-chair of the board of directors of Friends of the High Line, and Vogue magazine editor, is the author of the recently released book City Parks: Public Places, Private Thoughts.  “We live in our parks, and our parks live in us.  Parks are where we make loose appointments with friends, where we smooth out our nerves, where we introduce our babies to the outside world.  Parks are of the earth, they are of the people, and they are first and foremost, free.”  Catie will escort us on a literary and photographic journey focused on the gift of Parks in our lives.

    Registration and coffee will begin at 10:00 am, and the lecture begins at 10:30 am.  An optional luncheon will follow the lecture.  Garden Club of the Back Bay members will receive a written invitation and a car pool notice in the mail.  For others who wish to attend, email info@bostoncommittee.org.
