    The Friends of the Public Garden are recruiting volunteers to become tour guides for their 2018 season, which runs weekdays May through September. If you’re passionate about the trees, plantings, sculpture, and history in the Boston Public Garden, please attend one their upcoming information sessions and learn more about becoming a volunteer guide for the tour program, Untold Stories of the Public Garden:

    Wednesday, November 29 at 11am
    Thursday, December 14 at 12 noon
    Thursday, January 4, 2018 at 3pm
    Tuesday, January 23, 2018 at 12 noon

    Training is provided and begins in February.

  • Saturday, December 5, 4 – 5:30 pm – Winter Lights Along the Greenway

    Enjoy the East Boston Greenway lit up with festive luminarias and a holiday sing along with local performers and carolers.  Hot chocolate and cookies will keep you warm.  Meet at the blue caboose near South Bremen and Marginal Streets.  Snow date Sunday, December 6.

    The Friends of East Boston Greenway and Boston Natural Areas Network are sponsoring this event, and they need help from community groups, businesses and individuals.  Here is how you can help:  Make batches of 50 luminarias (materials will be provided and delivered to your worksite or other location – bags, sand and candles). Or, if you’d rather, volunteers from your group can attend a group lunimaria making session, date and time to be announced.  Your sponsorship will be recognized by a sign on the Greenway.  You can volunteer to be a monitor the night of the event, watching over a section and lighting any candles that go out.  You can donate food or refreshments, or hang event flyers or posters.  With the support of volunteers, the Friends hope to make at least 350 – 400 luminarias.  If you can help, call Candice Cook at 617-542-7696, or email candice@bostonnatural.org.

  • Volunteer Opportunity at the Rose Kennedy Greenway

    Volunteer Horticulture Opportunities occur at the Rose Kennedy Greenway about once a month.   • Sunday, October 18, 10:00 am – 1:00 pm – Fall Clean Up of Olmsted’s Historic Grounds

    The weeds and vines are entangling Olmsted’s rhododendrons and encroaching views at Stonehurst, The Robert Treat Paine Estate in Waltham, Massachusetts, on Sunday, October 18, from 10 – 1.  Help restore these historic grounds and get some exercise to boot.  Please bring work or gardening gloves and any pruning tools you have handy.  Following the clean-up operation, the house will be open to the public from 12 noon until 3 pm, with a guided tour offered at 1 pm.  Light refreshments will be provided.  For directions to 100 Robert Treat Paine Drive please call 781-314-3290, or log on to www.stonehurstwaltham.org.

  • Saturday, September 19 – Stewardship Saturday on Lovells Island

    Join the Boston Harbor Islands staff on Saturday, September 19 for some hands-on learning as they remove invasive plants from important natural and historic areas of the Park.  Explore the local flora and fauna and discuss the ecology and natural history of the Park as you work side by side with expert staff to improve habitat for the native birds, bugs and flowers of our local National Park. For this journey to Lovells Island you will search for possible Swallow Wort and Japanese Knotweed.  You will also cut back some multiflora roses bushes that have grown on the outlying areas of a recently planted forest.  For more information, and for time and place of departure, call 617-223-8666 during business hours – you will get a call back.  Their web site is in a redesign process so email contact is currently down.
