  • Wreath of the Day – Thank You, Volunteers

The Garden Club of the Back Bay’s Wreath Project is an all-volunteer endeavor. From taking the orders to producing the tags, from the accounting to the bill payments, from the set up and break down, decorating and delivery, nothing happens without our members, and in some cases, friends of members. We thank everyone who planned, everyone who worked, everyone who lent moral support, and everyone who bought. Without all of you, we couldn’t help the street trees in the Back Bay to the extent we do.

  • Native Plant Trust Volunteer Opportunities for 2020

Native Plant Trust, the nation’s first plant conservation organization and the only one solely focused on New England’s native plants, announces volunteer opportunities for 2020. Volunteer initiatives span the region and include openings in field conservation, horticulture, and educational outreach. Training begins in Winter 2020. Volunteering with Native Plant Trust offers adults a unique chance to learn about native plants from experts, to make a difference locally and regionally by supporting the environment, and to build community and friendships with others who share their interests. All volunteer opportunities come with complimentary training and enrichment.

Plant Conservation Volunteers (PCV) training is in March and April 2020. PCVs help conserve native flora by participating in plant monitoring, seed collection, and habitat management throughout New England. Interested applicants should have some botanical knowledge, a strong commitment to native plant conservation, good observation skills, and a sense of adventure.

Community Outreach Volunteers support Native Plant Trust by sharing information about the organization’s work and resources at events in their local areas. Requirements: Community Outreach Volunteers should be active in their local communities or willing to be more engaged, attend, or serve on the planning committee for large/community events. They must enjoy interacting with the public.

Garden Guides offer visitors a personal introduction to Garden in the Woods, the renowned botanic garden of Native Plant Trust and sharing the beauty and importance of native plants. Requirements: Garden Guides should enjoy interacting with both people and plants, and enjoy learning and sharing that knowledge. They must be comfortable spending extensive time outside.

For more information about volunteer programs at Native Plant Trust or to apply, please contact publicprograms@NativePlantTrust.org or visit http://NativePlantTrust.org/about/volunteer.

  • Friday, November 28 – Sunday, January 4 – Holly Days: Winter Reimagined

If you have come to Holly Days at Tower Hill Botanic Garden in the past, you know that volunteers come up with some clever, creative displays.  The emphasis is on natural materials.   The 2014 theme is Winter Reimagined, a wonderfully free and open-ended concept sure to inspire and entertain.  Wander through glittering indoor displays and illuminated trees and shrubs in the Orchard, Entry, Lawn and Winter Gardens.  A giant Bromeliad tree, hundreds of poinsettias, more than 1,500 hand-crafted ornaments and over six miles of lights make this a unique holiday experience for all ages.  The Garden is making it even easier to experience the winter magic with special extended hours during Holly Days.  Buildings, grounds, The Shop at Tower Hill, and TWIGS Cafe will be open Wednesday and Thursday evenings until 9 pm, and all other days from 9 – 6.  Tower Hill is open seven days a week during Holly Days, including Mondays.  Tower Hill Botanic Garden is located at 11 French Drive in Boylston, Massachusetts.  For directions, and a complete list of activities including live music and children’s events, log on to www.towerhillbg.org.

  • Tuesday, April 26, 5:30 pm – 8:00 pm – How to Have a Great Volunteer Day

Christina Poff of the Franklin Park Coalition and Nataka Crayton of United Neighbors of Lower Roxbury will talk about planning volunteer stewardship projects, coordinating with agencies, finding support from neighborhood businesses, and doing effective publicity and outreach at a workshop on Tuesday, April 26, hosted by Boston Park Advocates.  The evening will begin with pizza and networking at 5:30, followed by the workshop at 6.  The event takes place at Boston Natural Areas Network, 62 Summer Street in Boston.  RSVP at http://bit.ly/fjSkyD.

  • Monday, December 6 – Thursday, December 9 – Garden Club of the Back Bay Wreath Making Days

Here is the call for volunteers for The Garden Club of the Back Bay’s Annual Wreath Making Project. A version of the notice below was mailed to our members, but we’re happy to welcome all volunteers who may wish to help out with a fun, social, neighborhood fund raising event.  If you’re new and would like to decorate, you’ll be paired at first with one of our experienced decorators, as an assistant.  There are many other non-decorating tasks, however, so feel free to stop by!

Pastor Ingo R. Dutzmann and his parish will again host our Club for wreath making on the lower level of The First Lutheran Church of Boston, 299 Berkeley Street (on the corner of Berkeley and Marlborough Streets). We are very, very grateful. The hours are as follows:

    Monday, December 6 – 8:00 a.m. – 7:30 p.m. (set up, training, + decoration)
    Tuesday, December 7 – 8:00 a.m. – 7:30 p.m. (decorating)
    Wednesday, December 8- 8:00 a.m. – 7:30 p.m. (decorating, delivery)
    Thursday, December 9- 8:00 a.m. – 8:00 p.m. (decorating, delivery, clean up)

Please come to the side door on Berkeley Street. We’ll post a sign.  Dried materials and fresh greens can be delivered to the Church no earlier than Monday, December 6. Please have all decorations “cleaned down” – branches cut down, dead leaves removed – so we can contain the mess we inevitably make. Delicate materials can be laid flat in sweater boxes or gently stacked in cardboard containers. We are going to need as many dried items, especially flowers, as we can collect.

Bring clippers and scissors if you have them, labeled with masking tape for ease of identification. Aprons are also a good idea. Dress comfortably! We need everyone’s help, whether you decorate, deliver, organize, make telephone calls confirming delivery, or sweep. Contact info@bostonflora.com if you have questions or can take a delivery shift. Otherwise, we’ll see you on December 6. Please try to come for as many hours as possible, on as many days as you can spare – we need you, and you’ll have a great time. Thank you.

  • Wreath of the Day: Happy Hannukah from The Garden Club of the Back Bay

From now through the end of the month we will share snapshots from this year’s successful holiday wreath project. A special thank you goes out to all our volunteers, who will be singled out in an upcoming BayLeaf newsletter mailed to our membership.  Today’s featured wreath, in blue, silver, and white, honors the Festival of Lights.

  • On Line Wreath Store Closed for 2009

Garden Club of the Back Bay volunteers are getting ready for this week’s big event, our four day wreath making marathon at The First Lutheran Church of Boston, located at 299 Berkeley Street.  We proudly announce that we have presold all the fully decorated wreaths we can create during the project days, but invite the public to stop by the Church Monday through Thursday, December 7 – 10, to see what we have made (it’s a holiday event just to walk through the courtyard and see the variety of styles) and to purchase a plain wreath or a wreath with a spectacular bow, while our supplies last.  We also thank all our loyal customers, and welcome the new ones.

  • Friday, December 4, 6:00 – 8:00 pm – Gala Preview Party & Wreath Silent Auction

Come to the opening of the Rotch-Jones-Duff House & Garden Museum Holiday Exhibit and Wreath Silent Auction on Friday, December 4, from 6 – 8 pm. Enjoy fabulous hors d’oeuvre and yuletide spirits in the festively decorated rooms of the Museum. Take home a beautiful wreath, custom designed by volunteers. $40 members, $45 non-members.  For tickets, directions and more information, log on to www.rjdmuseum.org.

  • Saturday, December 5, 4 – 5:30 pm – Winter Lights Along the Greenway

Enjoy the East Boston Greenway lit up with festive luminarias and a holiday sing along with local performers and carolers.  Hot chocolate and cookies will keep you warm.  Meet at the blue caboose near South Bremen and Marginal Streets.  Snow date Sunday, December 6.

The Friends of East Boston Greenway and Boston Natural Areas Network are sponsoring this event, and they need help from community groups, businesses and individuals.  Here is how you can help:  Make batches of 50 luminarias (materials will be provided and delivered to your worksite or other location – bags, sand and candles). Or, if you’d rather, volunteers from your group can attend a group lunimaria making session, date and time to be announced.  Your sponsorship will be recognized by a sign on the Greenway.  You can volunteer to be a monitor the night of the event, watching over a section and lighting any candles that go out.  You can donate food or refreshments, or hang event flyers or posters.  With the support of volunteers, the Friends hope to make at least 350 – 400 luminarias.  If you can help, call Candice Cook at 617-542-7696, or email candice@bostonnatural.org.
