    The Garden Club Federation of Massachusetts  Ruth A Wallack Fund presents A Floral Journey from Afar with Francine Thomas, award winning designer and teacher, on Tuesday, April 24 at 10 am at the Regis College Fine Arts Center in Weston.  Tickets are $20.     Francine Thomas, from Tauranga in the North Island of New Zealand, is the Featured Designer at the 2018 lecture. Francine’s passion for flowers and Floral Art has taken her to many different heights. In 2010 Francine decided to start her own business called “A Floral Affair by Francine.” She joined the Tauranga Floral Art Group and became a qualified Teacher, Judge, Demonstrator, and Lecturer for the Floral Art Society and Consultant for florists. Since joining Floral Art, Francine has been Stage Hand for many well known designers; Irene Brockwell of Australia, Rob Platel from Holland, Gregor Lersch from Germany, Mark Pampling from Australia, Tomoki and Suri from Japan and many others.

    In 2016 Francine won New Zealand National Floral Art Designer of the Year, and was the National Demonstrator representing New Zealand at the WAFA World Show in Dublin, Ireland in 2014. She was Designer of the Year in the 2006, 2010 and 2014 Bay of Plenty Art Festival. Francine has the Floral Art Society of New Zealand (FASNZ) diploma in Teaching, Judging and Demonstrating from the New Zealand Professional Florist Inc. (NZPF). Francine has an energetic sense of humor which can be contagious and which is evident in her shows. She is inspired by what she sees and feels inside, to come up with her ideas. She loves sharing those ideas to inspire other people to do the same.

    Wednesday, June 18 – Sunday, June 22 – 11th World Flower Show: A Floral Odyssey

    During the 11th World Flower Show, to be held June 18 – June 22 in Dublin, Ireland, the RDS Convention Complex will be transformed into a haven of beauty filled with spectacular competitive floral exhibits. The creativity and innovation of floral artists never ceases to amaze. Irish and International floral demonstrators and lecturers will take you on magical tours of their countries with the use of their native plant materials and stories while the myriad of vendors in the Trade Hall will tempt you to shop. Explore the gardens, culture and scenery of Dublin and the surrounding counties on one of the planned tours. Join the party on the final evening at the Gala Banquet in the Burlington Hotel, now known as The Doubletree by Hilton Hotel. WAFA Ireland promises a truly Irish evening of music, dance and fun.

    Bookings for all events are particularly brisk with some demonstrations now full. Don’t be disappointed and book your tickets before the ‘Full House’ sign goes up. Accommodation in some hotels in the immediate vicinity of the RDS is sold out but our conference accommodation team has added extra hotels and will assist you in acquiring accommodation.

    The World Flower Show is a triennial event and this is the first occasion it is staged on Irish soil. The show is open to all and even if you are not a flower arranger, please come and witness this colorful extravaganza. You will not be disappointed.   • Thursday, November 17, 10:30 am – 1:30 pm – The Boston Committee of the Garden Club of America Fall Lecture and Luncheon

    The Boston Committee of The Garden Club of America invites its member clubs to the Fall Lecture and Luncheon on Thursday, November 17, featuring Carol R. Johnson, Founder and Chairman Emeritus of Carol R. Johnson Associates.  Carol will speak on A Life In The Landscape.  Boston-based landscape architect Carol R. Johnson has spent the last four decades transforming urban spaces, campuses, industrial sites, and neglected waterfronts into vital, celebrated parks and public spaces.  In her lecture she will talk about her life, career, design philosophy, and what it means to be a pioneering woman in the field of landscape architecture.  At the Thursday, November 17 meeting, The Boston Committee will also present the 2011 Boston Bowl to Arabella Dane, past President of the American Horticulture Society and the World Association of Flower Arrangers, as well as a Master Judge for National Garden Clubs and the author of several books on horticulture and butterflies.  The Beautification Award will be presented to Boston University in special recognition of its work planting, paving, and enhancing the Commonwealth Avenue landscape.  Registration will begin at The Country Club, 191 Clyde Street, at 10:30 pm, with lecture and luncheon to follow.  $50 for lecture and luncheon, $25 lecture only, with checks made payable to The Boston Committee of the GCA and mailed to Mrs. William U.     On Sunday, June 19, from 2 – 4:30, you will have the opportunity to see International Grand Masters Alison Bradley (Scotland), Gregor Lersch (Germany), Brigitte Auzely (France), Carles Jubany Fontanillas (Spain), and Niels van Hemert (Holland) demonstrate cutting edge floral artistry at the Citi Performing Arts Center, Wang Theater, Tremont Street, as part of the 2011 World Flower Show.   • Friday, June 17, 4:00 pm – Architecture, Art, Landscape

    Tom Armstrong, Director Emeritus of the Whitney Museum of American Art, was the leader of four American Art Museums over a period of thirty years. He is now the Chairman of the Garden Conservancy, a national preservation organization. Trained as a studio artist at Cornell University, Mr. Armstrong recently combined his interest in architecture, art and landscape in a new steel and glass house designed by Thomas Phifer and Partners, New York City on a three-acre seaside site on Fishers Island, New York (See Architectural Digest, October 2010). Armstrong’s vision of abstraction in the environment of his island home is the topic of his 2011 World Flower Show presentation on Friday, June 17 at 4 pm in the Cityview Ballroom of the Seaport World Trade Center Plaza.  Tickets are $10 and may be purchased online at www.wafausa.org.

  • Friday, June 17, 2:00 pm – Tiffany & Co.: Flora and Fauna: 170 Years of Tiffany Excellence

    John Loring will present an illustrated lecture Tiffany & Co.: Flora and Fauna: 170 Years of Tiffany Excellence as part of the 2011 World Flower Show on Friday, June 17, at 2 pm in the Cityview Ballroom of the Seaport World Trade Center (Plaza Level.)  Mr. Loring is Design Director Emeritus of Tiffany & Co. and the author of numerous books on Tiffany, and art in general. He graduated from Yale University and has an honorary Doctor of Fine Arts degree from Pratt Institute. He has served on the acquisitions committee of the Department of Prints and Illustrated Books at the Museum of Modern Art, New York.Tickets to the lecture are $10, and may be purchased on line at www.wafausa.org.

  • Saturday, June 18, 10:00 am – 12:30 pm – America’s Firsts

    Join WAFA USA in the Plaza Ballroom at the Seaport Hotel on Saturday, June 18, from 10 – 12:30 for a flower arranging demonstration entitled America’s Firsts, featuring Julie Clevett, Jane Godshalk, Julie Lapham, Lee LaPointe, Tasha Tobin (her arrangement pictured below), and Tony Todesco.  This event is a coveted second repeat presentation of one offered the day before which is currently sold out, so act quickly.  Tickets are $50 and may be purchased at www.wafausa.org.

     

  • Thursday, June 16, 2:00 pm – 4:30 pm – My Homeland

    As part of the 2011 World Flower Show, This Glorious Earth!, international representatives from Australia, Belgium, Canada, Ireland, and Pakistan will create breathtaking floral arrangements at the Back Bay Events Center, 180 Berkeley Street (the John Hancock Hall and Dorothy Quincy Suite)  on Thursday, June 16, from 2 – 4:30.   Tickets are $65, and may be ordered at www.wafausa.org.  Photo below, by Express, was created at an exhibition/demonstration of flower arrangement at the Pakistan National  Council of the Arts in aid of flood victims.

     

  • Thursday, June 16, 3:00 pm – The President’s House and Garden

    An important aspect of the 2011 World Flower Show, to be held June 15 – 19 for the first time in the United States, is the series of terrific lectures available for a modest (in this instance $10) fee.  William Seale will present a program entitled The President’s House and Garden, in the Amphitheater of the Seaport World Trade Center on Thursday, June 16, beginning at 3 pm. William Seale is author of the recently updated two-volume set, The President’s House—which includes an epilogue on the Bill Clinton and George W. Bush years. He also serves as editor of White House History, the journal of the White House Historical Association. Drawing from his vast knowledge of this national landmark, Seale will offer an unforgettable account of the White House from its origins during the nation’s beginning to today, a continuing story of adapting and altering, yet always keeping close to the original image and purpose of the landmark. In addition to showing how the different presidents and their families used and lived in the White House, he will also reveal the roles played by scores of characters—butlers, housemaids, caterers, gardeners, coachmen, architects, interior decorators, and even fortune-tellers—in the keeping and management of the house.   • Wednesday, June 15, 6:30 pm – 8:30 pm – 2011 World Flower Show Opening and Preview

    The 2011 World Flower Show, This Glorious Earth!, will be held June 15 – June 19th at the Seaport World Trade Center in Boston.  All art lovers, competitors, floral design enthusiasts, conservationists, and connoisseurs of international culture should mark their calendars and join WAFA as 600 international competitors showcase floral art from around the world – for the very first time in the United States of America.  The opening and preview benefit will take place Wednesday, June 15, from 6:30 – 8:30 at the Avenue of Flags and Seaport World Trade Center.  Following remarks by the WAFA President and dignitaries, enjoy the Cutting of the Lei while eating regional hors d’oeuvre, beer and wine, plus a cash bar.  Tickets are $125 and may be purchased on line at www.wafausa.org.  We will feature posts on individual events in the coming weeks, but we hope you will reserve your tickets now.  Early bird private tours of the show, including breakfast and daily admission, will take place Thursday through Saturday, 7:30 am – 10:00 am, for a charge of $75, and tickets may also be reserved on line.
