    The Arnold Arboretum, in concert with the Mary M. B. Wakefield Charitable Trust, will offer a workshop with the staff of the Wakefield Estate in Milton, Massachusetts on Saturday, March 16, from 9 – 11. Become a backyard orchardist and grow your own fruit! Even with a small yard, you can enjoy fruit from your own trees with minimal effort and cost. This step-by-step workshop will teach you all you need to know to plan and create a compact orchard for years of enjoyment. Participants will spend part of the workshop outside in the orchard for a pruning demonstration, so dress accordingly. Space is limited; pre-registration required at www.arboretum.harvard.edu.  $20 fee.

  • Saturday, January 12, 5:00 pm – 7:00 pm – Winterfire

    The annual mid-winter evening garden stroll at the Wakefield Estate, 1465 Brush Hill Road in Milton, will mix lightscape with landscape to highlight many of the estate’s signature trees and garden features. The outdoor event on Saturday, January 12 will also feature a bonfire, where visitors can enjoy hot chocolate, toasted marshmallows and more. Participants should dress warmly.   • Saturday, April 2, 9:00 am – 11:00 am – High Density Fruit Orchard Workshop

    The Wakefield Charitable Trust and the Arnold Arboretum will hold a High Density Fruit Orchard Workshop at the Wakefield Estate, 1493 Brush Hill Road in Milton, Massachusetts on Saturday, April 2, from 9 – 11 in the morning. Learn how to install a high density orchard for years of backyard fruit production. This method uses little space yet produces high yields of fruit with little effort. In last year’s session at the Wakefield Estate in Milton, students created a high-density orchard of 40 apple trees in a 25 x 30 ft. area. This year’s session will cover the basic planning and set up requirements for creating a low cost compact orchard for your own backyard. Those interested in planting trees this season should plan to order trees during the winter or early spring. Suggested supplier: Adams County Nursery.
