    Once again Historic New England will feature orchids at the Lyman Estate Greenhouses in Waltham, Massachusetts on Saturday, October 23 at 10 a.m.  Bring up to three orchid plants for evaluation by experienced horticulturists. Get advice on maintaining healthy blooming plants. Other services offered include repotting and educational handouts about orchids. Books, pots, and growing supplies are for sale.   • Friday, October 8 – Sunday, October 10, 10:00 am – 4:00 pm – Fall Orchid Sale

    Hundreds of orchid plants are for sale, including many hard-to-find varieties. Visit these antique greenhouses and enjoy gorgeous floral colors, shapes, and scents. Among the many varieties on display and for sale are cattleyas, laelias, oncidiums (below), Paphiopedilum, and Phalaenopsis. Their long lasting and showy blooms make orchids a dramatic addition to any indoor environment and this adaptable species can be grown in a variety of home conditions.     Historic New England is sponsoring a Beginning Orchid Growing Clinic at the Lyman Estate Greenhouses in Waltham, Massachusetts on Friday, November 6, beginning at 10 a.m.  Learn the essentials of growing orchids, including requirements of growing media, light, water, temperature, and fertilization. With their long-lasting and showy blooms, orchids are one of the most beautiful and dramatic of all flowering plants.     Visit the hallowed halls of Stonehurst, an icon of American architecture, on Friday, October 30, from 6:30 – 9:00 pm.  Enjoy food, brew, and a bit of magic, too!

    Designed by Henry Hobson Richardson and Frederick Law Olmsted, Stonehurst, the Robert Treat Paine Estate, is the only museum devoted to these two pioneering figures in American architectural and landscape design history. At Stonehurst, these close friends and collaborators forged a uniquely American architecture by focusing on the intimate, almost seamless integration of the natural and man-made worlds. Richardson and Olmsted, like Winslow Homer, Emily Dickinson and Mark Twain, were among the great artists of the post-Civil War era who asserted cultural independence from Europe by cultivating an aesthetic deeply rooted in the American landscape.

    The 109 acre Stonehurst estate is located nearby at 100 Robert Treat Paine Drive in Waltham, Massachusetts.  Tickets are $150 each, and sponsorship opportunities at higher levels are available.   • Sunday, October 18, 10:00 am – 1:00 pm – Fall Clean Up of Olmsted’s Historic Grounds

    The weeds and vines are entangling Olmsted’s rhododendrons and encroaching views at Stonehurst, The Robert Treat Paine Estate in Waltham, Massachusetts, on Sunday, October 18, from 10 – 1.  Help restore these historic grounds and get some exercise to boot.  Please bring work or gardening gloves and any pruning tools you have handy.  Following the clean-up operation, the house will be open to the public from 12 noon until 3 pm, with a guided tour offered at 1 pm.  Light refreshments will be provided.  For directions to 100 Robert Treat Paine Drive please call 781-314-3290, or log on to www.stonehurstwaltham.org.

  • Wednesday, October 14, 10:00 – 12 noon – Designing Principles

    Please join The Garden Club Federation of Massachusetts for a series of three interactive design lecture/demonstrations on flower arranging at The Espousal Center, 554 Lexington Street, Waltham, Massachusetts.  The first session will be Wednesday, October 14, the second will take place Wednesday, January 27, 2010, and the final session will be on Wednesday, April 28, 2010.  Massachusetts designers, among the best in the country, will teach you what they do and how they do it – top secrets are often revealed.  Reservations are being accepted on  a first come, first served basis, and must be made in writing.  The total fee for all three sessions is $25 (what a deal!).  Make your check out to GCFM,Inc., and mail it with your name, address, telephone number, email address, and Garden Club affiliation to Robin Murphy, PO Box 3263, Wareham, MA 02571.  There is a registration deadline of October 1, so get on to this right now.
