  • Saturday, October 22, 7:00 pm – 8:30 pm – Before the Flood

    Have you ever wondered where your water comes from? Today, roughly three million people in Massachusetts enjoy water from the Quabbin Reservoir, but that has not always been the case. In Before the Flood, author Elisabeth C. Rosenberg explores the story of the Quabbin, the people who built it, and the residents who were displaced to make way for its construction.

    Please join the Waterworks Museum on October 22 in welcoming Rosenberg for a discussion of this fascinating history, which will be followed by a book signing. This program will take place live at the museum, 2450 Beacon Street in Boston, and is free of charge. Doors open at 6:30pm. Masks are currently recommended but not required. Reserve your free ticket in advance to secure your place HERE. If seats are still available, walk-ins will be welcome on the day of the program.

    Elisabeth C. Rosenberg is a writer and editor who focuses on the interplay between individuals, demographic groups, and disruptive technology. She has contributed to The Boston Globe, Boston Magazine, Fast Company, Harvard University Press, and the Electronic Privacy Information Center. She divides her time between Washington, DC, and Amherst, MA.

  • Saturday, May 23, 11:00 am – 12:30 pm – Walking Tour of Metropolitan Waterworks Museum and Chestnut Hill Reservoir

    Those of you who missed The Garden Club of the Back Bay’s terrific tour of the Waterworks Museum in March will have a second chance on Saturday, May 23, this time with past GCBB speaker Marion Pressley, landscape architect and principal of Pressley Associates.  Pressley has expertise in cultural landscape and the preservation and restoration of public parks, institutions, and private historic properties.  Wear comfortable shoes!  The Museum is located at 2450 Beacon Street, and the program is free and open to the public.  Contact Eric Metzger at eric.metzger@waterworksmuseum.org, or call 617-277-0065.   • Thursday, March 12, 10:00 am – Tour of the Waterworks Museum

    The Garden Club of the Back Bay’s March meeting will be a field trip to the Waterworks Museum, 2450 Beacon Street in Boston. We will be joined by Executive Director Marcis Kempe and architectural historian Dennis DeWitt at the Waterworks Museum, who will discuss Boston’s first water safety laboratory, the landscaping of Boston, and other technological aspects of the creation of Boston’s excellent water system.   • Wednesday, May 28, 6:00 pm – 8:00 pm – The Landscape Legacy of Chestnut Hill Reservoir

    In addition to its significant role in early Boston water supply, the Chestnut Hill Reservoir was a popular public park since its inception.  Designed landscapes of formal grassed banks, picutesque rock outcroppings, meadows, and woodlands and rich architectural features attracted city dwellers for leisurely walks and carriage rides.  Today the Chestnut Hill Reservoir Historic District is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and it is a designated City of Boston Landmark.  Discover the fascinating design history of the Chestnut Hill Reservoir, constructed at the height of Boston’s “Golden Age.”  In celebration of Massachusetts Preservation Month, join the Waterworks Museum and Department of Conservation and Recreation on Wednesday, May 28, for a one hour lecture in the Overlook Gallery of the Waterworks Museum followed by a one hour leisurely stroll along the banks of the reservoir to look at historic restoration efforts in progress.

    Meet at the Waterworks Museum at 2450 Beacon Street in Boston.  Parking is limited.  There are only 30 parking spaces in the complex allocated for exclusive use by the Museum.  Please park in spaces labeled “Museum Visitor.”  Public transportation encouraged.  Contact Lauren Kaufman at 617-277-0065 for more information.

  • Wednesday, May 21, 7:00 pm – Using Laser Technology as a Preservation Tool

    Michael Feldman, president of Feldman Land Surveyors, will give a presentation on his company’s use of three-dimensional laser scans of historic sites.  Feldman will share his company’s techniques while showing examples of recent work.  He will discuss how these renderings play a crucial role in modern renovations of historic sites.  The May 21st talk is sponsored by The Metropolitan Waterworks Museum and will begin at 7 pm at 2450 Beacon Street in Chestnut Hill.  $5 per person.  For more information contact Lauren Kaufmann at info@waterworksmuseum.org, or call 617-277-0065.
