  • Monday, January 19, 1:00 pm – 4:00 pm – The Plantastic World of Harry Potter

    The Friends of the Wellesley College Botanic Garden had so much fun last spring with the plants mentioned in the Harry Potter books that they’re doing it again, with some different activities. While whomping willow and puffapod sprang from the imagination of author J.K. Rowling, other plants used by Harry Potter and his wizardly friends are quite real and have stories of their own to tell.  Meet a mandrake and see if it screams.  Explore the Wellesley College Botanic Garden’s selection of wand woods and potion ingredients.   Make an owl craft and learn about these amazing creatures.  Create a “plunging potion pouch” to take home. Come dressed as your favorite character from the Harry Potter books if you wish.  The free, family friendly event will take place Monday, January 19, from 1 – 4 (drop in anytime.)     Award winning food writer and chef Didi Emmons presents a slideshow at the Wellesley College Botanic Garden Visitors Center on Wednesday, March 5 at 1 pm, featuring 25 off-the-beaten-track herbs, greens, and foraged foods easily found or cultivated in Boston’s climate.  Didi also profiles the eccentric, sustainable lifestyle of farmer Eva Sommaripa, whose 2-acre organic farm grows unusual herbs and greens exclusively for Boston’s top chefs.   It was Eva who taught Didi to love these plants, and inspired her to write Wild Flavors, a seasonal cookbook celebrating Eva and her herbs.  There will be an author book sale and signing at the lecture.  Wellesley Friends of Horticulture – free, non-members $10.     You know a well-designed garden when you see it. You enjoy the space. There are places to go. There are surprises. There is lush vegetation. Enjoy a trip through several well-designed residential gardens with Professor Emerita Mary Coyne as she shares images from her garden travels and explain what makes a garden work from her point of view as a landscape designer. The lecture will take place at the Wellesley College Botanic Garden on Wednesday, February 12 beginning at 1 pm.

    After her retirement from the College, Mary Coyne embarked on her retirement career and received her Certificate from the Landscape Institute in 2010. The Harriet B. Creighton Educational Garden across the driveway from the Visitor Center is designed and maintained by her. WCFH Members Free / Non-Members $10.     Following a brief review of the Crowquille pen’s basic techniques, Carol Ann Morley encourages you to bring classic sophistication and grace to your pen and ink illustrations.   • Fridays, October 25 – November 22, 12:15 pm – 2:00 pm – Plant Stories and Poetry Reading Group

    Bring your lunch and join the Friends of Wellesley College Botanic Gardens for a weekly discussion with experienced group leader Joan Parrish of short stories and poetry featuring plants.  Joan is a WCBG docent with a master’s degree in adult education from Boston University and teacher of short story courses for Life Long Learning at Regis College.  Each week (Fridays, October 25 – November 22, from 12:15 – 2) read one assigned short story and one poem for discussion.  Peas, mango blooms, sawlogs, and blue flowers are some of the plants that inspire and contribute meaning to works by authors including Andrea Barrett, Rick Bass, and Marjory Stoneman Douglas.  The story for the first session, “Flowers” by Alice Walker, and the poem “Peonies” by Jane Kenyon can be read online or picked up the the Friends’ office.  WCBG free, nonmembers $25 for the series.  Contact www.wellesley.edu/wcbgfriends, or call 781-283-3094.

    Bring your laptop and artwork to this Friends of Wellesley College Botanic Garden class on five Fridays, September 27 – October 25, from 9:30 – noon, and learn how to transform your images into finished reproductions for cards, collages and posters, as well as for the web.  With guidance from Patricia Buchanan, make color adjustments, tidy up edges and backgrounds, add a watermark, type or add other enhancements.  Solve the mystery of sizing and resolution to meet printing and exhibition submission standards.  Scanning procedures will be covered.  Mouse skills and a basic computer proficiency are required.  Note: Photoshop Elements is a more user-friendly and affordable version of the original Photoshop.  The skills you acquire with Elements are always transferable to Photoshop.  If you don’t already have Photoshop Elements, it can be downloaded for a free 30-day trial period.  Although this will not cover the entire class period, it’s a good way to begin.
