    Friends of Wellesley College Botanic Gardens announces the 2020 annual ON LOCATION: The Kampong, at the National Tropical Botanical Garden in Coconut Grove, Florida. All abilities are welcome.   Join Sarah Roche and enjoy five days of botanical art.  Once on location, start to draw with easy field sketches on the grounds of the stunning Kampong historic home and garden, where the climate of the southeast shore of Florida affords a natural open-air environment in which tropical species flourish.  Explore rudiments of form from live specimens as you work in graphite studies.  Some plants will be flowering, others will be fruiting, and some may have all stages of development visible.  Then add color with watercolors.  Take home a journal filled with field sketches useful for future art works and fond memories of a unique experience.  The fee includes class instruction, four luncheons, and a visit to a local botanic garden.  Travel, accommodations, other food, and other expenses not included.  Dormitory accommodations at The Kampong may be arranged on a first-come basis.  For those arriving on Sunday, January 19, a get-acquainted gathering will be arranged.  Contact WCBG Friends for more details.  WCBG Friends of Kampong Members $540, non-members $640.     Explore the world of botanical art in this Friends of Wellesley College Botanic Gardens course designed especially for the beginner.  Sarah Roche guides you through structured exercises, projects and demonstrations, exposing you to the basic techniques of botanical drawing and watercolor painting.  The four day class will be held at the Wellesley Community Center  Monday through Wednesday, June 4-6, from 9:30 – 3:30, and on Thursday , June 7, from 9:30 – 12:30.   • Tuesday, October 17, 9:30 am – 3:30 pm – Introducing Small Fall Subjects

    Try your hand at painting a small autumnal subject in this Wellesley College Botanic Gardens one-day workshop on Tuesday, October 17 from 9:30 – 3:30 with British artist Dianne Sutherland and Irish artist Shevaun Doherty. You will learn to draw and paint one or two introductory subjects, such as a small fruit or leaf. You will first observe and interpret the fine details and tonal values in graphite before painting your subject. The class includes demonstrations and guidance on drawing color mixes and techniques.   • Thursday, May 18, 10:00 am – Photo Journey to Southern India

    On a trip to southern India for her daughter’s wedding in 2013, Maureen Bovet was enchanted by the tropical gardens. What fun it was for a plant enthusiast! This photo lecture includes the Lalbagh Botanical Gardens in Bangalore, the backwaters of Vembanad Lake in Kerala (pictured below) and the tea plantations in the Western Ghats mountains, with (naturally) a few wedding photos as well.     On Friday, April 14, beginning at 10 am at the Wellesley College Botanic Gardens, Carol Govan talks about the connections among related arum plants and how they express their genetic heritage in response to their environments. Some are important food crops, some are “delicious,” and others can make you sick. Some look X-rated, and a few can change sex according to the weather. One produces the largest flower in the world, while another is one of the smallest plants around. Learn all about the amazing Araceae family. Wellesley Friends free, nonmembers $10.   • Friday, April 7, 1:30 pm – Hope Floats on White: White Gardens

    This illustrated lecture on Friday, April 7 at the Wellesley College Botanic Gardens by author and garden designer Carol Julien (www.caroljulien.org) features the design techniques for creating a white garden. Carol discusses what is considered one of the finest gardens of the last 100 years: the White Garden at Sissinghurst Castle in England. She describes her 1,000 square foot white garden in Halifax, MA, and will distribute a plant list for creating your own white garden.     A fast paced, stressful lifestyle can wreak havoc upon our physical and emotional well-being. While lifestyle changes are often the key to managing stress levels, there are many wonderful herbs that can help support us in making positive life changes. Steph Zabel covers practical herbal remedies that support the nervous system and help us to shift from a “fight or flight” state of being into a more relaxed state. In this Wellesley College Botanic Gardens workshop on Tuesday, December 13 from 1 – 2:30, you will review and sample relaxing nervine herbs that many people find useful for dealing with stress, anxiety, and sleep issues.     The final fall installment of the Wellesley College Botanic Gardens‘ Family, Form and Function lectures and greenhouse walks with Carol Govan will take place Friday, November 18 from 10 – 12, when Carol speaks on The Gingers and Their Relatives. Did you know that gingers, bananas, birds of paradise, heliconias, cannas, and prayer plants are all closely related?
