    The Cultural Landscape Foundation is pleased to announce that What’s Out There Weekend Boston will take place on September 12 and 13, 2020. Boston’s landscape legacy includes myriad parks and plazas, cultural institutions, historic sites and neighborhoods, and the world-renowned Emerald Necklace. Join TCLF for a weekend of free, expert-led tours that will reveal the long history and intricate cultural heritage behind this “City on a Hill.”

An online city guide highlighting Boston’s significant cultural landscapes and their designers is also forthcoming. Fingers crossed, people, that by September this opportunity will be available.

    The Cultural Landscape Foundation is pleased to announce that What’s Out There Weekend San Francisco Bay Area will take place on September 14 and 15, 2019. Drawing on the Bay Area’s rich cultural landscape legacy, this weekend of free, expert-led tours will feature dozens of sites, including gardens, campuses, plazas, public parks, and cultural institutions. An online city guide and printed guidebook will be produced in tandem with the Weekend.   • Friday, October 6 – Sunday, October 8 – What’s Out There Weekend: Indianapolis

    The Cultural Landscape Foundation is pleased to announce the upcoming What’s Out There Weekend: Indianapolis. The Weekend, October 6 – 8, will offer free tours of the city’s renowned modernist landscapes, as well as highlight other regional gems. The tours will be led by experts in history and landscape design, revealing a largely unrecognized legacy of thoughtful landscape architecture and design in the heart of the Midwest.

    What’s Out There Weekend: Indianapolis and its accompanying City Guide are made possible in large part by grants from the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) Art Works and Lilly Endowment Inc., and in partnership with the Indiana Cultural Landscapes Committee of the Indiana Chapter, American Society of Landscape Architects (INASLA). The seven-person committee is led by Meg Storrow, FASLA, Chair, and David Gordon, ASLA Trustee, Vice Chair.

  • Saturday, May 18 – Sunday, May 19, 8:00 am – 5:00 pm – What’s Out There Weekend: Philadelphia

    The Cultural Landscape Foundation’s What’s Out There Weekend, scheduled for May 18 and 19, features free, expert-led tours at more than two-dozen significant examples of Philadelphia’s landscape architecture, including hidden gems in Fairmount Park (below,)  the Beaux Arts grounds of the Rodin Museum and the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the Colonial Revival design near Independence Hall, the groundbreaking Modernist expressions of Society Hill, and the Postmodernist plazas of Venturi Scott Brown. The tours reveal the back story about city shaping, landscape architecture and the design history of significant landscapes all over the city. Many are places people pass daily, but do we know their background stories?

    What’s Out There Weekend dovetails with the Web-based What’s Out There, the nation’s most comprehensive searchable database of historic designed landscapes. The database offers a broad and interconnected way to discover the breadth of America’s historic designed landscapes, while What’s Out There Weekend gives people the opportunity to experience the landscapes they might see every day in a new way.  Registration is available on line at www.tclf.org.

  • Saturday, September 25 – Sunday, September 26,8:00 am – 5:30 pm – What’s Out There Weekend

    This September 25 and 26  in Washington, D.C., The Cultural Landscape Foundation will hold What’s Out There Weekend—the prototype for an annual, nationwide series of interpretive tours that focus attention on our country’s rich and diverse heritage of designed landscapes. The public will be able to visit any or all of 25 sites around Washington, D.C., to get free tours from expert guides.

    The goal of the weekend’s activities is to raise awareness about the importance of Washington, D.C.’s astonishing and diverse historic designed landscape heritage and to educate the public about the individuals who designed them and the unique narratives behind their creation, ongoing care, and management. The landscapes span over 200 years of design, from L’Enfant’s Plan for the city to Dan Kiley’s plaza at the National Gallery of Art. Throughout the weekend there will be public guided tours, including a unique event at the U.S. Capitol Grounds; an insider’s view of some of Northwest D.C.’s most prominent estate landscapes and an introduction to Congressional Cemetery, one of our nation’s oldest designed cemeteries. TCLF’s What’s Out There Weekend partners, the National Park Service, Smithsonian Institution and D.C. Department of Parks and Recreation, will support sites all over the city, from the National Mall to Theodore Roosevelt Island National Memorial to Kenilworth Aquatic Gardens.

    The What’s Out There Weekend initiative dovetails with the web-based What’s Out There, the first searchable database of the nation’s designed landscapes. What’s Out There Weekend extends the focus of the What’s Out There database, by creating a rich series of inspiring and educational events.

Department of Parks and Recreation in hosting this first What’s Out There Weekend.
