  • Saturday, November 18, 7:00 am – TARCkey Trot

What better way to jump-start the holiday season by getting together with some other Animals to chase some turkeys around some beautiful trails? The folks at Wright-Locke Farm couldn’t think of anything better, so we’ve decided to host the TARC Turkey Trot or better yet – TARCkey Trot, at Wright-Locke Farm in Winchester, MA and Whipple Hill in Lexington, MA on Saturday, November 18 beginning at 7 am. The course will start at Wright-Locke, but will mostly wind its way through the remarkable single track of Whipple Hill, a 120-acre conservation area featuring the highest point in historic Lexington. The course is 5k, but don’t expect a PR (if you’re used to running on roads!). This is a great chance to stretch the legs and burn some calories before beginning to hibernate after that big dinner just a few days later! You’ll have the option to run it once, or as many times as you care to over 6 hours.

More details are available online (including a finalized course map/distance), but rest assured – you’ll be ready for Thanksgiving after finishing this one. Complete details at www.wlfarm.org

  • Saturday, November 4, 10:00 am – 2:00 pm – Bare Trees and Naked Shrubs

No leaves? No problem! We will use a combination of branching patterns, bud and bark characteristics, habitat, persistent fruits, galls, and marcescent leaves to help identify woody plants in winter. We’ll head out onto conservation lands in Lexington and Winchester, MA, where we’ll take a close look at 18-20 common trees and shrubs. The New England Wild Flower Society program, co-sponsored with the Massachusetts Association of Conservation Commissions, will conclude indoors with a twig quiz and a hot beverage. Bring lunch and a hand lens if you have one. Boot Boutwell is your instructor, and the locations will be Whipple Hill in Lexington and Wright-Locke Farm in Winchester. $38 for sponsor members, $46 for nonmembers.
