    The Berkshires are home to over 100 species of edible wild plants. Many of these species are more nutritious and flavorful than their cultivated counterparts. On July 12 from 2 – 5, join wild edibles enthusiast and author Russ Cohen, for a three-hour ramble around Sky Meadow Farm in Alford, Massachusetts to learn about edible wild plants. Keys to the identification of reach species will be provided, along with info on edible portion(s), season(s) of availability and preparation methods, as well as guidelines for safe and responsible foraging.

  • Wednesday, May 29 or Tuesday, June 18, 6:00 pm – 8:00 pm – Foraging Walks with Russ Cohen

    The Greater Boston area is home to over 150 species of edible wild plants, many of which are more nutritious and/or flavorful than their cultivated counterparts.  Join Russ Cohen, expert forager and author of Wild Plants I Have Known…and Eaten, on a two hour ramble through Allandale Farm, 259 Allandale Road in Brookline, to learn about at least two dozen species of edible wild plants.  Pending favorable weather conditions, several edible mushroom species may be encountered as well. Keys to the identification of each species will be provided, along with information on edible portion(s), season(s) of availability and preparation methods. General guidelines for safe and environmentally responsible foraging will also be discussed. $20 per ticket, and two dates are offered: May 29 and June 18.

    Perhaps you thought the Garden Club of the Back Bay website doesn’t have a sense of humor.  Think again.  We’re encouraging our readers to register for Wilderness Immersion for Adults, which will run from Sunday, July 7 through noon on Sunday, July 8 in Goshen, Massachusetts.  Join Earthwork Programs for a 24 hour wilderness skills weekend, learn and practice fire by friction, tracking, knife safety, wild edible and healing plants, aidless navigation (that means no GPS ladies,) and other fun and games.  The cost is $250 – $350 on a sliding scale, and you may learn more at www.earthworkprograms.com, or by calling 413-522-0338.
