    This Massachusetts Horticultural Society workshop at The Gardens at Elm Bank on May 25 led by Garden Educator, Melissa Pace, offers a hands-on opportunity for participants to create their own personalized terrarium. During the workshop, attendees will have the chance to select from a variety of plants and design elements to craft a unique miniature indoor garden.

    Melissa will provide guidance on plant selection, arrangement, and care techniques to ensure the long-term health and vitality of the terrariums. Participants will also learn about the importance of proper maintenance, including watering, light requirements, and common problems to look out for.   • Saturday & Sunday, November 19 & 20, 1:00 pm – 3:00 pm – Recycled Container Herb Terrariums

    For this Peabody Essex Museum project we will create our own five layer terrarium using recycled clear containers, fresh mint and more. When a terrarium is closed, it creates a greenhouse effect, keeping plants warm and hydrated. Create your own self-replenishing herb garden and save yourself a trip to the grocery store! Free with admission.

  • Saturday, February 5, 11:30 am – 12:30 pm – Valentine’s Wreath Workshop

    Wright-Locke Farm in Winchester is holding a Valentine’s Wreath Workshop on Saturday, February 5 from 11:30 – 12:30. This is a fun opportunity to create your own decorative heart shaped wreath from natural, compostable materials. You will use twine, vines, ribbons, paper, sticks, dried flowers, and berries. $45. As long as it is safe to do so, these workshops will be in-person, at the farm. All necessary supplies will be provided and participants will go home with their own creations.   • Friday, December 10, 1:00 pm – 2:30 pm – Houseplant Holiday

    What’s the Holiday gift that keeps on giving? Plants! Whether you received one yourself or want to know what to get the person that has everything, a holiday-themed plant can’t go wrong. Join Tower Hill Botanic Garden’s December 10 workshop with Robin Selwitz as we learn about houseplant care and some tips and tricks for what kind make good gifts, how to care for them, and how to make them have a fun festive twist. We will be potting up and decorating a festive plant to take home with seasonal pot, décor, and spirit!

    Robin is an experienced, very enthusiastic gardener with over 100 plants and years of botanical experience. Her specialty is caring for houseplants, and she is a Certified Master Urban Gardener who loves to empower people to have beautiful greenery in any space they have. She truly believes that everyone can have a green thumb with the right tools and knowledge in their arsenal, and enjoys teaching others how to help their plants not just survive, but thrive. When she is not teaching about plants, she works as a Technical Trainer for a telemedicine company in Boston, and loves hiking all throughout New England and spending time with her cat, Cheddar.

  • Wednesday, October 20, 10:30 am – 12:30 pm – Harvest Wreath

    Celebrate the richness of the autumn season at Tower Hill Botanic Garden on October 20 from 10:30 – 12:30. Create a wreath rich in autumn colors and textures. We’ll use preserved fall leaves, green leaves, golden yarrow, various grains, miniature corn, pods and seasonal berries to create a 16” wreath suitable for a sheltered door, porch, interior wall or table decoration. Finish the wreath with colorful fall ribbons or raffia to coordinate with your home.

    All materials are included in this program. If you register as a pair you will receive ONE SET of supplies.

    Instructor Betsy Williams teaches, lectures and writes about living with herbs and flowers. A lifelong gardener, herb grower and cook, Betsy trained as a florist in Boston and England. She combines her floral, gardening and cooking skills with an extensive knowledge of history, plant lore and seasonal celebrations. An entertaining lecturer, she weaves stories and legends throughout her informative talks and demonstrations. Her gardens, floral work and retail shop have been featured in many books, national magazines and newspapers, including The New York Times, The American Gardener, Victoria, Better Homes and Gardens, Country Living Gardner, Colonial Homes, the Herb Companion, and Traditional Homes.

    Learn to make your own unique autumn twig wreath using natural and local materials, with Wright-Locke Farm, online, on November 21 from 10:30 – 11:30. Instructor Ferriss Donham will walk you through the basics of assembling your wreath and share ideas for decorating, Kits will be available for pick-up at the farm the week prior.   • Saturday, October 7, 1:30 pm – 3:30 pm – Fall for Local: Floral Workshop with Little State Flower Farm

    There are few things more indicative of the change of the seasons than the shifting colors and textures of the leaves, flowers and trees surrounding us. Join Jill Rizzo of Studio Choo East and Anna Jane Kocon of Little State Flower Company for a collaborative floral design workshop focusing on bringing the fleeting beauty of autumn into your home. The class will take place at Tower Hill Botanic Garden on Saturday, October 7, from 1:30 – 3:30. We’ll start with a show-and-tell on the basics: selection, flower care, cleaning and seasonality. We’ll discuss the selected color palette and our favorite ways to tweak traditional autumn hues. The arranging demonstration will focus on combining gestural branches and foliage to make a unique structural base, then we’ll show you how to layer and nestle your favorite blooms for a composition that is full of movement and air. Workshop cost ($165 for Tower Hill members, $175 for nonmembers) includes all materials for students to take home (flowers and vessel).     Jill Rizzo is the owner of Studio Choo East, founded in 2009 in San Francisco with best friend Alethea Harampolis. In 2015, she opened a New England branch of the studio focused on creating uniquely wild floral designs for weekly clients, weddings, and workshops. Co-author of The Flower Recipe Book and
    Branches and Blooms, her work has been featured in Martha Stewart Weddings, Real Simple, Veranda and Sunset.

    Anna Jane Kocon is the founder and owner of Little State Flower Company; a five acre specialty-cut flower farm based on Aquidneck Island in Portsmouth, Rhode Island. Little State focuses on sustainable, environmentally-friendly growing practices in an effort to create local, healthy options for the wedding and event industry in and around Rhode Island.

  • Wednesday, April 5, 6:00 pm – 7:30 p – Pansy Wreath Workshop

    On Wednesday, April 5 from 6 – 7:30, come to Weston Nurseries of Chelmsford and celebrate the coming of Spring. Starting from a moss form, we will help you to create a colorful and unique decorative item to last the entire season. Pansy Wreaths can adorn your door or table!

  • Saturday, March 16, 9:00 am – 11:00 am – Planning and Creating a Compact Orchard

    The Arnold Arboretum, in concert with the Mary M. B. Wakefield Charitable Trust, will offer a workshop with the staff of the Wakefield Estate in Milton, Massachusetts on Saturday, March 16, from 9 – 11. Become a backyard orchardist and grow your own fruit! Even with a small yard, you can enjoy fruit from your own trees with minimal effort and cost. This step-by-step workshop will teach you all you need to know to plan and create a compact orchard for years of enjoyment. Participants will spend part of the workshop outside in the orchard for a pruning demonstration, so dress accordingly.   • Saturdays, April 23 and 30, May 7 and 14, 9:00 am – 11:00 am – Family Chicken Project

    This collaborative effort on four successive Saturdays beginning April 23 between Historic New England and the MSPCA shows how to raise chickens in your backyard. Program participants attend workshops to learn about different chicken breeds, how to build a chicken coop and keep the flock healthy, as well as about feed, first aid, and safety. Afterward, attendees are certified to help care for the chickens at the farm throughout the season. When the season ends, the chickens will be offered to the participating families for purchase The series also includes a field trip to Nevins Farm and a lecture by Sarah Corchense, D.V.M., of Tufts Veterinary Hospital. The program will take place at the Spencer-Peirce-Little Farm, 5 Little’s Lane, Newbury, Massachusetts.  Registration required. Please call 978-462-2634 for more information.
