  • Saturday, November 16, 1:00 pm – 3:00 pm – Geology Walk

If you think you know all of the history of World’s End in Hingham, step back in time with registered geologist and long-time Trustees volunteer, Les Tyrala, to look for evidence of the ancient igneous bedrock, volcanoes, submarine mudslides, and rugged mountain rivers within this portion of the 400 Millenia old Boston Basin.  Also, we will look for direct evidence of the last period of glaciation that ended about 9,500 years ago here in southeastern New England. The Walk is Saturday, November 16 from 1 – 3, and is free for Trustees members, $5 for nonmembers. Register at http://www.thetrustees.org/things-to-do/south-of-boston/event-49545.html

Wear sturdy footwear as the terrain is uneven and rocky along portions of the trails.  This walk is limited to 18 attendees.  Children (11 and older), and dogs on leash, are welcome.

Parking is expressly prohibited outside of the property’s parking facilities and vehicles parked along Martin’s Lane or other neighborhood streets shall be subject to ticketing and towing at the vehicle owner’s expense.

  • Wednesday, June 20, 6:30 pm – 8:00 pm – Olmsted History Walk

At the turn of the century Frederick Law Olmsted, the countries most famous landscape architect came to World’s End and designed the landscape in a way that would forever influence every visitor to the property. This walk celebrates his life and work by taking a closer look at the designed landscape of World’s End in Hingham and uncovering his vision for the 251 acre peninsula.

Join The Trustees on Wednesday, June 20 from 6:30 – 8 for a guided walk along the century old cart paths and step back in time to learn all about Olmsted’s involvement at Worlds End from a landscape architect’s point of view. We’ll discuss the original land owners of the property, Olmsted’s design work, and how World’s End eventually became a Trustees reservation. We’ll also take a close look at the relationship between Olmsted and his protégé Charles Eliot, the founder of The Trustees of Reservations. Preregistration is recommended for this program, while day-of admission will be accepted. Member adult $5, nonmember $10. Contact worldsend@thetrustees.org or visit http://www.thetrustees.org.

  • Sunday, September 18, 12:00 noon – 3:00 pm – Opening Reception with Jeppe Hein: A New End

Jeppe Hein, a Berlin and Copenhagen-based artist, often combines elements of humor with the traditions of minimalism and conceptual art in his work. At Trustees of Reservations Hingham property World’s End, Hein will install a reflective labyrinth structure, made of mirrored posts of differing heights, whose form mimics the shape of the surrounding drumlin formations. Hein draws inspiration from the stunning natural beauty and landscape at World’s End, which features a combination of Frederick Law Olmsted-designed and natural landscapes with spectacular views of the Boston harbor and skyline.

Visitors can walk through the labyrinth, touch the mirrored panels, and create their own photographic interpretations of “art and the landscape.” The sculpture will be installed in August and will be on view for a full year. Each season will bring a new and interesting dimension to this unique work. The Trustees will host a free (with admission) opening reception with the artist from noon to three on Sunday, September 18, 2016. For more information visit www.thetrustees.org.

  • Saturday, August 28, 10:00 am – 1:00 pm – World’s End

World’s End, a 275-acre peninsula owned by The Trustees of Reservation, is well known for the beauty of its landscape and its views of Boston Harbor. The property, which was farmed for several hundred years, was slated in the late 19th century to be subdivided under a plan (later abandoned) designed by Frederick Law Olmsted. It has a remarkable variety of naturalized as well as native flora. Its woodlands include communities dominated by Norway maple and English oak as well as an impressive stand of native red oak and hop hornbeam. Its old fields and thickets contain an exceptional diversity of herbaceous plants, including the rare showy goldenrod, and its lowland habitats have both freshwater wetlands and salt marshes. This New England Wild Flower Society walk led by Jessica Korecki on Saturday, August 28, from 10 – 1 will cover a variety of communities from the high points of the property’s open drumlins to rocky coves and shaded overlooks. We will look at both native and naturalized flora, and at the dynamics of their coexistence in this unique environment. World’s End is also a great place for birding, and binoculars are recommended. Bring a bag lunch and a hand lens if you have one. Fee: $24 (Member) / $27 (Nonmember).  To sign up, log on to www.newfs.org, or call 508-877-7630.
