  • Garden Club of the Back Bay Holiday Wreaths – Feathers

You are either a feather person (“please, lots of feathers!”) or you are not a feather person (“please, no feathers!!!).  Member Chris Anderson is a master at handling feathers, as the pictured wreath shows.

  • Garden Club of the Back Bay – Floral Wreaths

Some of our designers specialize in floral looks, and the unusual coloration of this wreath was much admired by the purchaser.  This wreath can stay up long after the holidays are over.

  • Garden Club of the Back Bay Holiday Wreaths – Magnolia and Lotus

Magnolia leaves, some with a dusting of gold paint, set off the beauty of golden pine cones and lotus pods in this fabulous wreath created by Laurie Carter Noble.

  • Garden Club of the Back Bay Holiday Wreaths – Light and Bright

Often, wreaths are hung in dimly lit vestibules or hallways, and must be designed with that in mind.  Francine Crawford used lime green ribbon and plenty of gold for this wreath, destined for a shadowed entrance.

  • Garden Club of the Back Bay Holiday Wreaths – Tradition

What could be more traditional than red plaid and pine cones?  Today’s featured wreath accentuates these classic elements with touches of eucalyptus,  baby’s breath, and pearly glass balls.

  • On Line Wreath Store Closed for 2009

Garden Club of the Back Bay volunteers are getting ready for this week’s big event, our four day wreath making marathon at The First Lutheran Church of Boston, located at 299 Berkeley Street.  We proudly announce that we have presold all the fully decorated wreaths we can create during the project days, but invite the public to stop by the Church Monday through Thursday, December 7 – 10, to see what we have made (it’s a holiday event just to walk through the courtyard and see the variety of styles) and to purchase a plain wreath or a wreath with a spectacular bow, while our supplies last.  We also thank all our loyal customers, and welcome the new ones.

  • Saturday, December 12 – Weston Holiday House Tour

The Women’s Community League of Weston is pleased to announce Holiday House Tour ’09.  On Saturday, December 12, six stunning pre-civil war homes decorated for the holidays will be featured.  Over the summer the committee designed a fabulous day, chock full of Holiday Cheer, American history, and innovative combinations of the past, present, and future, bound to thrill all of those in attendance.  They  are especially pleased to debut their new Platinum Corporate Sponsors:  Boston Properties, Biogen Idec, Highland Meadows and Weston Landscaping. These corporations are proud to support the Women’s Community League Services and Scholarship Fund and give back to their local community.  Contact Nancy Hughes at nancy.hughes@comcast.net, or log on to www.wclweston.org for directions, hours, and pricing information.  The beautiful wreath below was created by Susan Snow Summerside of Moving Designz (sic) Interior Decorating.

  • Don’t Forget – Time to Collect

We remind our members today that extra, interesting greens, seed pods, branches, holly, dried fruits and flowers, grasses, pine cones, and twigs in interesting shapes are all needed next week during wreath making days at The First Lutheran Church of Boston.  Below is a picture of Past President Sarah Monaco and Executive Committee Member Maureen O’Hara collecting last weekend in the Berkshires.  Please bring as much as you can to the Church, cleaned down if possible, for the decorators to use creating the beautiful wreaths, one of which is pictured below, bedecked with collected finds.

  • Garden Club of the Back Bay Holiday Wreaths – Supporting Environmental Awareness

Part of the mission statement of The Garden Club of the Back Bay is to educate the public on horticultural and environmental issues.  In furtherance of that mission, we organize an annual series of lectures and meetings with prominent speakers.  Guests are welcome and encouraged to attend almost all meetings, which are listed on the Calendar page of this website (scroll down past the calendar grid for complete descriptions).   We love a theme, and this year we are exploring the topic of “The Ethical Gardener.”  Should we garden organically?  Should we design our gardens with native plantings?  Should be buy food locally from the farmers markets or CSA’s?  Do our floral centerpieces need to be made with imported tropical blooms with a high carbon footprint?  What about saving the birds by drinking shade grown bird friendly coffee?  So many issues, and not all of them are clear cut.  Proceeds from our wreath sales help subsidize the contributions we make to the organizations (mostly not for profit) who provide the speakers for our programs.  Please do plan a trip into the Back Bay on one of our meeting days, and know that all are welcome to join our Club.  We have no geographic restrictions on membership!  To order a wreath or poinsettia, click here.

  • Monday, December 7 – Thursday, December 10, 8:30 am – 7:00 pm – Wreath Making

Pastor Ingo R. Dutzmann and his parish will again host our Club for wreath making on the lower level of The First Lutheran Church of Boston, 299 Berkeley Street (on the corner of Berkeley and Marlborough Streets). We are very, very grateful.  The hours are as follows:

    Monday, December 7 – 8:30 a.m. – 7:00 p.m. (set up, training, + decoration)
    Tuesday, December 8 – 8:30 a.m. – 7:30 p.m. (decorating)
    Wednesday, December 9- 8:30 a.m. – 7:30 p.m. (decorating, delivery)
    Thursday, December 10- 8:30 a.m. – 8:00 p.m. (decorating, delivery, clean    up)

Please come to the side door on Berkeley Street.  We’ll post a sign.   Dried materials and fresh greens can be delivered to the Church no earlier than Monday, December 7.  Please have all decorations “cleaned down” – branches cut down, dead leaves removed – so we can contain the mess we inevitably make.  Delicate materials can be laid flat in sweater boxes or gently stacked in cardboard containers.  We are going to need as many dried items, especially flowers, as we can collect.

Bring clippers and scissors if you have them, labeled with masking tape for ease of identification.  Aprons are also a good idea.  Dress comfortably!  We need everyone’s help, whether you decorate, deliver, organize, make telephone calls confirming delivery, or sweep.  Contact Francine Crawford at 617-859-8865 (francine.crawford@verizon.net) or Margaret Pokorny at 617-536-2920 (MPok384@verizon.net) if you have specific questions.  Otherwise, we’ll see you on Monday.  If you still plan to order wreaths, send the order forms along as soon as you can.   Please try to come for as many hours as possible, on as many days as you can spare – we need you, and you’ll have a great time!  Thank you.  If you can take a delivery shift, and have not already been contacted, email Elisabeth Lay at elisabethlay@comcast.net, or call her at 617-536-6633.
