  • Saturday, April 29, 1:00 pm – 3:30 pm – Xeriscaping

Xeriscaping is landscaping that requires no supplemental irrigation once plants have been established. Native plants that are well adapted to the environment and climate can help reduce the need for watering in a garden. Alternatively, landscapes can be designed to eliminate the need for irrigation through water conservation. This class will explain techniques for creating a more drought-proof garden and discuss native plants for xeriscaping in New England. Benjamin Crouch is the proprietor of Land of Plenty, which specializes in edible and naturalistic landscapes for Greater Boston. Ben was previously Urban Orchards director for the Boston-based non-profit, EarthWorks. For more information about Land of Plenty, go to www.landofplentygardens.com.

The April 29 class will take place from 1 – 3:30 at Garden in the Woods, 180 Hemenway Road in Framingham, and is $33 for ELA members, $40 for nonmembers. See more at: http://www.ecolandscaping.org/event/xeriscaping/#sthash.Oj2rXJ2a.dpuf

The Tidewater Daylily Society would like to invite you to the 2017 American Hemerocallis Society National Convention at the Norfolk Waterside Marriott Hotel. • Friday, April 14, 12:30 pm – iNaturalist City Challenge

Contribute to Science, and participate in the iNaturalist City Challenge.

Every observation can contribute to biodiversity science, from the rarest butterfly to the most common backyard weed. iNaturalist shares your findings with scientific data repositories like the Global Biodiversity Information Facility to help scientists find and use your data. All you have to do is observe.

Record your encounters with other organisms and maintain life lists, all in the cloud. Works on all devices: smartphones, tablets, etc. Help scientists and resource managers understand when and where organisms occur. Connect with experts who can identify the organisms you observe (they look at your picture and provide identification.) Build your knowledge by talking with other naturalists and helping others.

The Emerald Necklace Conservancy is on a mission to make Boston the city with the most documented natural species. Join them on a nature walk Friday, April 14 at 12:30 (meet at the Longwood T stop), or make observations on your own using the iNaturalist app between April 14 – 18. Register for the walk at www.emeraldnecklace.org.

  • Thursday, April 20, 6:00 pm – Ocean Evolution Today

A Harvard Museum of Natural History Panel Discussion on Ocean Evolution Today will take place Thursday, April 20, beginning at 6 pm in the Science Center, Hall D, 1 Oxford Street. Participants will include:

In this panel discussion, three marine scientists with expertise in chemistry, microbiology, geology, marine conservation, and the use of remotely operated vehicles to study deep-sea organisms will discuss the impact of human activity on ocean and coastal ecosystems and answer questions about actions that individuals and organizations can take to support the health of the ocean.

Presented in collaboration with the Cambridge Science Festival. The Evolution Matters Lecture Series is supported by a generous gift from Drs. Herman and Joan Suit.  Free parking is available at the 52 Oxford Street Garage.Free and open to the public.
