  • Sunday, April 25, 10:30 – 12:00 noon and 1:30 – 3:30 – Flowers in Our Life and Master Class with Els Teunissen

    As part of the Museum of Fine Arts’ Art in Bloom 2010, Els Teunissen will present a floral demonstration and illustrated lecture on Sunday, April 25, from 10:30 – 12 in the Remis Auditorium of the MFA, entitled Flowers in Our Life.  Later that afternoon, from 1:30 – 3:30, she will give a master class with hands on flower arranging instruction, with a class size limit of twenty.

    Els Teunissen is a renowned speaker in both the US and Europe.  She has arranged decorations for the Dutch royal family, the United Nations, and the Academy Awards, and represented the Flower Council of Holland at the Institute of Floral Design.

  • Saturday, April 24 – Monday, April 26 – Art in Bloom

    The MFA Associates invite you to take part in the 34th annual Art in Bloom at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston Saturday, April 24 – Monday, April 26.  This extraordinary spring festival of art and flowers features garden clubs from around New England (including The Garden Club of the Back Bay) creating arrangements inspired by works of art throughout the Museum.  Family Day will be held Saturday from 11 – 3, floral demonstrations (see today’s other posts) will be held Sunday and Monday from 10:30 – noon, floral master classes will be offered on Sunday and Monday from 1:30 – 3:30, and elegant tea on Saturday and Sunday from 2 – 4, Member’s Night Sunday 6-8, and a Community Open House on Monday, 5 – 9.  Go to www.mfa.org for complete information and hours.  Tickets may also be purchased on line at www.mfa.org/tickets, or by calling 617-369-3306.

  • Saturday, March 20, 6:00 pm – Wild and Scenic Environmental Film Festival

    Be prepared to be inspired because The Wild and Scenic Environmental Film Festival, hosted by local non-profit “e” inc., the Environmental Science Learning and Action Center, is back! WSEFF will take place on March 20th from 6-10 PM at The Benjamin Franklin Institute of Technology, 41 Berkeley Street in Boston’s South End. The evening will showcase 9 films – shorts, animations, documentaries – about pressing environmental issues, opening with the award winning documentary ‘Tapped’ about the privatization of water and the effects of buying back what you already own. Tickets also include a light supper, dessert, and a silent auction. Supper begins at 6 and films at 7:15. Dessert/Intermission is from 8:30 to 9 followed by the 2nd set of films from 9 to 10. Admission for the entire event is just $25 if purchased before March 1 and $30 after that.     Local artist Joanne Tarlin will be exhibiting her extraordinary art at the Wellesley Free Library March 6 through March 30.  A meet the artist reception will take place this Saturday, March 6, from 9 am – 12 noon.  She has generously offered to provide an individual membership to the Massachusetts Horticultural Society with the purchase of any piece of artwork at the show.  Her exhibit is entitled “Of a Powerful Nature: 20 Dynamic and Sensual Paintings.” A percentage of all sales will be donated to the Wellesley Free Library as well.

  • Saturday, March 20, 2:00 – 3:30 pm – Susan Dworkin: The Viking in the Wheat Field

    Join journalist Susan Dworkin on Saturday, March 20,  from 2 – 3:30 pm at the Berkshire Botanical Garden for an exploration of the world’s delicate supply of wheat, international agribusiness, scientific intrigue, and the Svalbard “Doomsday Vault.”  Learn about the extraordinary work of Bent Skovmand, one of the greatest plant scientists and pioneering seed bankers.  Follow his quest for “agriculture’s public library” as he spearheads an international effort to collect and preserve crop seeds to ensure that we won’t starve.  Dworkin will share tales of daring agricultural rescues and discuss the politics and perils of monoculture and patenting of plant genetic resources by corporations. She also will examine how the citizenry must overcome the urban-rural divide in order to protect the world’s harvest.  Enjoy a reception and book signing with the author following the lecture.  All proceeds benefit the Berkshire Botanical Garden Education Department.  Members of BBG $16, non-members $21.

  • Saturday, March 13 – Longwood Symphony Orchestra Benefit Concert for The Food Project

    Founded in 1982, The Longwood Symphony Orchestra is recognized as a unique model of community engagement.  The group uses its performances to raise both funds and awareness through its healing Art of Music ™ program.  On Saturday, March 13, at the New England Conservatory’s Jordan Hall, the Longwood Symphony Orchestra will hold a concert benefiting The Food Project.  Tickets will be available for $40 per individual.  $100 will buy a ticket to the concert and a pre-concert reception.  $250 will purchase a ticket to the concert and reception, as well as two tickets for Food Project youth and/or members of their families.  For more information, or to reserve tickets, email events@thefoodproject.org.
