  • Thursday, August 8, 10:00 am – 4:00 pm – Penobscot River Restoration

Join the Ecological Landscaping Association and the Society for Ecological Restoration – New England Chapter on Thursday, August 8, from 10 – 4, for a program entitled Penobscot River Restoration: Great Works and Veazie Dam Removals, and Sedgeunkedunk Steam Restoration. (Someone should tell the ELA to shorten those title names!)  The Penobscot River Restoration Project is an unprecedented collaborative effort that will rebalance fisheries restoration with hydropower production in the largest watershed within Maine, and result in the ecological restoration on the Penobscot River.  Major partners in the project include hydropower companies, federal, state and tribal governments, the Penobscot River Restoration Trust, and conservation groups.  After several years and considerable work, the Penobscot Trust purchased thre dams from the PPL Corporation (the hydropower company) in order to remove the two most seaward dams – Great Works and Veazie – and to pursue a fish bypass around the Howland dam.  As part of the arrangement, PPL Corporation received approval to increase generation at six existing dams and will improve fish passage at four additional dams.  Complete information on this program may be found at http://www.ecolandscaping.org//srv/htdocs/wp-content/uploads/2013/06/Penobscot-Restoration-Eco-tour-Flier.pdf.  To register, call 617-436-5838, or register on line at https://www.eventville.com/catalog/eventregistration1.asp?eventid=1010441.

  • Sunday, July 14, 10:00 am – Gardens in the Watershed Tour

Each year, The Georges River Land Trust in Rockland, Maine, hosts an immensely popular Gardens in the Watershed tour in a different section of the Georges River watershed to give visitors a sense of the diversity and beauty of the landscapes from Montville to Port Clyde, and to explore regions they may have never visited.

The tour in 2013 is the 22nd and it features seven outstanding gardens in the upper watershed of the St. George River, including a working farm, nursery, sunflowers business, and geranium mail order business.

In addition to enjoying the gorgeous gardens, the day includes short talks on topics related to gardening, and a chance to meet the garden owners. Another element of the event is a raffle offering gift certificates donated by local nurseries, florists, farms, and artisans. The tour is the primary fundraising event of the Land Trust. The proceeds from the tour enable us to work with landowners to honor their legacy of land, create and maintain the Georges Highland Path, and offer environmental education and outdoor experiences to the public. Tour tickets are $25 in advance, $28 on the day of the tour, and there is a $10 lunch option, all of which can be ordered on line at www.georgesriver.org/gardens-in-the-watershed-tour/.
