Wednesday, March 23, 2:00 pm – Garden Club of the Back Bay Glass Flowers Tour

A docent will lead Garden Club members on a custom tour of the recently restored “Glass Flowers”. The internationally acclaimed Ware Collection of Blaschka Glass Models of Plants is one of Harvard’s most famous treasures and is the only collection of its kind in the world. This unique collection of over 4,300 models, representing more than 780 plant species, was created from 1887 through 1936 by glass artisans Leopold and Rudolf Blaschka, a father and son team of Czech glass artists.  The Glass Flowers gallery was renovated in Spring 2016, introducing rebuilt, original historic wood and glass display cases, new state-of-the-art lighting, humidity, and vibration control systems.  The new space design and interpretation showcases the ongoing scientific relevance of the gallery and enhances the visitors’ experience of the models. In this exhibit one can see examples of the flora of the world in bloom all at once.

This long awaited tour, twice postponed due to Covid, will take place March 23 at 2 pm at the Harvard Museum of Natural History.

The Centennial Celebration of the American Orchid Society at the Historic Biltmore Hotel in Coral Gables, Florida, , postponed last year due to Covid-19 concerns, will take place April 6 – 9, 2022. You can book your space at the hotel now at www.aos.org

From its founding in 1921, the AOS has been the go-to resource for orchid growers of all stripes. Many members are hobbyists who enjoy growing orchids and want to learn more about them. Others enjoy the thrill of exhibiting their orchids in shows hosted by local orchid societies. And still, others aspire to become an orchid judge. Many are interested in the latest hybridizing trends, others in protecting orchids in the wild, and still others in research that advances orchidology.

From its award-winning Orchids magazine to the well-attended educational Webinars about all things orchid… from the expert speakers and outstanding vendors at the popular AOS members meeting to the highly respected system for awarding orchids of superior quality… from its conservation initiatives and support of research projects … the AOS is the connecting place for people whose common interest is the orchid.

The Board of Trustees and the Centennial Celebration Committee look forward to welcoming you to this momentous event and its Spring Members Meeting activities. Registration($100) includes a goodie bag, meet and greet social, preferred seating at the auction, and access to all lectures. The gala banquet on April 9 is $250. Register for either or both HERE.

  • Wednesday, February 23, 2:00 pm – Garden Club of the Back Bay Virtual Program – America’s Greatest Forgotten Garden: Restoration of the Untermyer Gardens

Join the Garden Club of the Back Bay online on February 23 at 2 pm for a free presentation on America’s Greatest Forgotten Garden: Restoration of the Untermyer Gardens. Stephen Byrns, President and Founder of the Untermyer Gardens Conservancy, will tell the story of Samuel Untermyer who purchased Greystone Estate in Yonkers, NY in 1899 and transformed the grounds into one of the finest gardens in the world.  Beaux-Arts Architect, Welles Bosworth designed the 150-acre formal garden into a horticultural wonder. However, over time, the green spaces regressed and the buildings crumbled.  Starting In 2011, a successful restoration was underway.  Stephen Byrns will explore the revived reflecting pools, mosaic pavements, marble sphinxes and the Temple of Love on top of a rocky bluff.  Sweeping views of the Hudson River framed by two 23-foot-tall Roman columns are jaw-dropping.

Note:  This program will not be recorded. It is presented on ZOOM. Please rsvp by February 18 by clicking HERE.  A ZOOM link will be sent a few days before the program.  For additional information email info@bostonflora.com.

  • Thursday, February 17, 10:00 am – Garden Club of the Back Bay February Meeting – A Growth of Trees: A Journey Through Time, Online

No single view of a tree is a fixed snapshot in time that tells the complete story. Join Michael Wojtech and discover how trees grow, reproduce, and interact with their environment across days, weeks, seasons, and years and over varying scales—from the intricate details of buds, flowers, leaves, and bark that we use for species identification to the collaborative roles of trees in ecosystems. Learn more about the function and experience the beauty of characteristics such as peeling bark, overwintering buds, lobed or toothed leaves, flowers by the thousands, and seeds that fly on the wind. This Garden Club of the Back Bay meeting will take place February 17 at 10:00 am.

Michael Wojtech earned his Masters degree in Conservation Biology at Antioch University New England, where his coursework brought a welcomed, intense immersion into the natural history and ecology of the plants, critters, and other organisms in the landscape. As a naturalist and educator, he strives to share the science and wonder of trees in an accessible and compelling fashion. He writes, photographs, illustrates, and presents programs about the structure, growth processes, and ecology of trees—including their bark, buds, leaves, roots, and wood—for audiences at all levels of experience.

Michael previously presented to the Garden Club of the Back Bay in 2013, when he spoke to us about his book, Bark: A Field Guide to Trees of the Northeast.  We are delighted to bring Michael back to speak to us  again!  To learn more about Michael Wojtech, visit his website at http://knowyourtrees.com. Please rsvp by February 11th by clicking HERE.  A ZOOM link will be sent a few days before the program.  The program will not be recorded.
