  • Holiday Wreaths 2017 – Fine Detail

Each fully decorated holiday wreath crafted by The Garden Club of the Back Bay is the product of many hours of labor. We did raise our price this season for this category (other items remain at 2015/2016 rates) not because we were trying to maximize profit, but because our limited volunteer pool was having a hard time fulfilling the demand. Wreaths of this size and quality sell for upwards of $240 in high end retail settings, due to the sheer amount of work involved. We hope you all will appreciate the love that goes into each wreath, but also know that our net profit each year goes straight back to the community. Order soon at https://bostonflora.com/shop/

  • Holiday Wreaths 2017 – Glamorous Glitz

Our third accent choice for this year’s fully decorated wreath orders is the newly minted “Glamorous Glitz.” For years we have been known for our use of glorious natural materials, specifically pine cones, grasses, seed pods, and unusual dried flowers and twigs. These are still very popular, but an explosion of sparkly accents have caught our eye in recent seasons, and we began using them on wreaths destined for our own homes. We were afraid to send out such outrageous designs to unsuspecting customers. However, we began publicizing them on our Wreath of the Day website feature, which runs from shortly after Wreath Week through New Year’s Day, and the feedback was quick and clear – some of you out there (and you know who you are) want glitter and shine.  So this year, for the first time, you may specify Glamorous Glitz as a design option. • Monday, December 4 – Thursday, December 7 – Garden Club of the Back Bay Holiday Wreath Making

Monday, December 4 – Thursday, December 7 – Garden Club of the Back Bay Holiday Wreath Making

Pastor Ingo R. Dutzmann and his parish will again host our Club for wreath making on the lower level of The First Lutheran Church of Boston, 299 Berkeley Street (on the corner of Berkeley and Marlborough Streets). We are very, very grateful. Please note that a core group will set up the space on Sunday, December 3  (anyone who can lend a hand is welcome – email info@bostonflora.com for set up times) and we will be ready to work first thing Monday morning – Monday participation by as many of you as possible is critical to our success. The hours are as follows:

    Monday, Dec. 4 – 8:00 a.m. – 7:30 p.m. (decorating)
    Tuesday, Dec. 5 – 8:00 a.m. – 7:30 p.m. (decorating and delivery)
    Wednesday, Dec. 6- 8:00 a.m. – 7:30 p.m. (decorating, delivery)
    Thursday, Dec. 7- 8:00 a.m. – 7:30 p.m. (decorating, delivery, clean up)

Please come to the side door on Berkeley Street. We’ll post a sign. Coffee and baked goods will be available each morning, and catered lunches will be delivered all four days. Dried materials and fresh greens can be delivered to the Church no earlier than Monday, December 4. Please have all decorations “cleaned down” – branches cut down, dead leaves removed – so we can contain the mess we inevitably make. Delicate materials can be laid flat in sweater boxes or gently stacked in cardboard containers. We are going to need as many dried items as we can collect, and we especially want interesting fresh evergreen boughs and holly.

Bring clippers and scissors if you have them, labeled with masking tape for ease of identification. Aprons are also a good idea. Dress comfortably! We need everyone’s help, whether you decorate, deliver, organize, make telephone calls confirming delivery, or sweep. Contact Francine Crawford at 617-859-8865 (info@bostonflora.com) or Margaret Pokorny at 617-536-2920 (MPok384@gmail.com) if you have specific questions, and contact Catherine Bordon at 617-480-8792 (catherinebordon@comcast.net) if you can take a two hour delivery shift. Otherwise, we’ll see you on Monday. If you still plan to order wreaths, send the order forms along as soon as you can, or order online at www.gardenclubbackbay.org. Please try to come for as many hours as possible, on as many days as you can spare – we need you, and you’ll have a great time. Thank you.

  • Holiday Wreaths 2017 – Designer’s Choice

Can’t decide? Buying a Garden Club of the Back Bay holiday wreath should be a pleasant experience, free from stress. Just let us make the decisions for you. Let us know whether you’ll hang the wreath indoors or out, and we’ll take it from there. Or just give us a bow color and let the designer coordinate his or her design around the ribbon. Feel free to add a note, such as “no fruit” or “Traditional” if you’d like. Order soon at https://bostonflora.com/shop/

  • Holiday Wreaths 2017 – All Natural

As we pointed out recently, purchasers of our fully decorated holiday wreaths may choose All Natural as a decorating option, in addition to choice of bow color. Below is an example of a fully decorated indoor wreath with plaid bow and all natural accents.  Why is this an indoor wreath? The tiny cream colored dried flower stems poking out between the pine cones, milkweed pods, and rose hips are fragile, and might not stand up well in a high wind. This isn’t to say it couldn’t do very well under a porch or overhang – but hanging it on the side of a barn in a windswept area might be problematic. Order early at https://bostonflora.com/shop/ All proceeds benefit the trees, both here in the Back Bay, on the Esplanade, in the Public Garden and Boston Commons, on the Emerald Necklace, in Copley Place, and everywhere we send support annually. It’s all about the trees.

  • Wreath of the Day – Happy New Year

The New Year is upon us, and today marks the final installment of this season’s Wreath of the Day feature. The black bear bow inspired our decorator to use glittery copper accents, and the wreath will look wonderful in a city kitchen or in a country cabin.  Our group of volunteers performed admirably and we encourage you to email info@bostonflora.com if you’d like to be on next year’s order form list.  The Garden Club of the Back Bay wishes you all a happy and prosperous New Year, filled with love and ecological activism.  Save our bears, save our wildlife.

  • Wreath of the Day – Going Green

Some customers may not realize that all the extra greenery on the wreaths is not part of the standard base – every twig of white pine, juniper, cedar, and magnolia, among others, has been painstakingly tied into the ring by our decorators.  The result makes for a rich tapestry, and other decorations become almost incidental.  We have occasionally had someone say that their wreath wasn’t really embellished, but often the designer has chosen to let the greens be the main focus, such as in the wreath below, one of a matched pair.

  • Wreath of the Day – Price Hike in 2017

We hate to be the bearer of bad news but we plan to charge a little more next season for our fully decorated wreaths. Ribbon prices are steadily rising, our materials costs are higher, and we continue to discover that area florists are charging more than double our going rate.  Our prices have remained steady for three years. The burden will be on us, however, to create consistently lovely wreaths that are well designed and crafted, to justify the hike.  Quality control will be even more vigilant. For instance, the beautiful wreath below was appreciated by the recipient and other decorators alike.
