    The Garden Club Federation of Massachusetts, Inc, and the Southeastern District present “Handwork” a standard flower show at the Barnstable County Fair,  Fair hours: July 16 -24 , 12:00 noon – 10:00 pm.  Cost: Fair Admission ($10 adult, $8 Seniors and Military, Children under 12 free).  The Barnstable County Fair has been an annual summer tradition on Cape Cod for 164 years.   • Friday, June 25 – Sunday, June 27 – Safari Flora & Fauna

    The 2010 Newport Flower Show will take place at Rosecliff from Friday, June 25 through Sunday, June 27.  Tickets may be purchased at www.newportmansions.org.  The Opening Night Cocktail Party will take place from 6 – 9 pm on Friday, although the show itself opens at 10:30 am that morning, closing at 5 pm to ready itself for the benefit gala.  Hours on Saturday and Sunday are 9 am – 5 pm.  Bartlett Tree Experts are the Presenting Sponsor.  All proceeds from the Newport Flower Show are dedicated to the ongoing restoration and maintenance of The Preservation Society of Newport County’s 88 acres of gardens and landscapes.

  • Saturday, April 17, 11:00 am – 12:30 pm – Art’s Traveling Cactus & Succulents Plant Show

    Not just spines! Lots of unusual and fascinating plants most people can easily grow. Hundreds of rare and bizarre plants strutting their stuff! Art Scarpa of the Cactus and Succulent Society will bring along both indoor tropical and hardy outdoor plants, depending upon the season, to Tower Hill Botanic Garden in Boylston for this instructional class on Saturday, April 17, beginning at 11 am and running through 12:30 pm.   • Saturday, February 6, 10:00 – 11:00 am – Introduction to Hydroponics

    After last year’s excessive rain and crop failures caused by the pathogen late blight, it makes sense to grow vegetables in a more controlled environment. This class will cover the basics of growing vegetables using hydroponics, which is simply growing plants in a non-soil growing medium. This can be a very simple and effective way to grow vegetables which can yield amazing results.  Instructor Tom Dzaugis of Green Path Garden Supply in Northboro will cover the different growing mediums available, why pH is in important in hydroponics, the difference between fertilizers for soil and hydroponics, and lighting. We will conclude with a Q&A discussion on how to put all this information together and have success growing plants hydroponically.  The class will take place at Tower Hill Botanic Garden, 11 French Drive in Boylston, Massachusetts, costs $6 for member of THBG, $8 for non-members, and you may register on line at www.towerhillbg.org.

    Monday, December 28 – Wednesday, December 30, the docents of Strawbery Banke will enlighten you on the darkest days of winter. These guided 90-minute tours, beginning each day at 10 am,  focus on the evolution of winter traditions over the centuries. Visitors tour five historic houses at Strawbery Banke in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, and experience the widely various decorations, sights, sounds, and smells of holidays and winter days past.     The 9th annual NOFA Course in Organic Land Care will be held January 13, 14, 15, 19 and 20, 2010 at the Parker River National Wildlife Refuge, 6 Plum Island Tpke., Newburyport, MA. (pictured below).  This 5-day intensive course trains and accredits professionals to practice organic land care (caring for land without the use of synthetic pesticides or soil amendments). It is recommended for landscapers, designers, municipal and parks employees, horticulturists, master gardeners and entrepreneurs.
