  • Monday, October 5, 7:00 pm – “HomeGrown”

There will be a screening of the movie “HomeGrown” on Monday, October 5 at 7 pm at Studio Cinema, 376 Trapelo Road in Belmont. The Dervaes family turned their yard in the heart of urban Pasadena into a small organic farm. While living “off the grid,” they harvest over 6,000 pounds of produce on less than a quarter of an acre, make their own bio diesel, power their computers with the help of solar panels, and maintain a web site that gets 4,000 hits a day. The film is an intimate human portrait of what it’s like to live like Little House on the Prairie in the 21st Century.

For more info: 617-484-3980 or www.belmontworldfilm.org.
Tickets: $10, $8 students & seniors. Advance tickets available
at the Studio Cinema box office or at www.mktix.com.

  • Tuesday, October 6, 9:00 am – Esplanade Association Shopping Day at Lord & Taylor’s

The Esplanade Association (www.esplanadeassociation.org) was invited to participate in a charity event that Lord & Taylor is holding on October 6th starting at 9 am at Boston and Greater Boston stores.  They are offering a number of groups a special shopping day at Lord & Taylor as a way to benefit each group’s cause. Lord & Taylor has given TEA 200 tickets to sell for their special shopping day for $5 each. That money goes directly to TEA. The tickets offer not only entry into the shopping day but also special coupon discounts of 20% and  15%  for sale and regular priced items, including 15% off cosmetics & fragrances (which is never offered) and 20% off one pair of Ugg boots if you want to purchase one. (Ugg boots are apparently very much in demand and don’t go on sale).  There will be special store give-aways, store raffles of $500 gift cards and prizes, music, AND this is an opportunity for people to help TEA.  If TEA supporters visit Lord & Taylor on October 6th and turn in their tickets, we will be eligible to win thousands of dollars in additional money.

If you would like to participate and help our partner organization The Esplanade Association, email Jeryl Oristaglio at jerylori@gmail.com.

  • Sunday, September 20, 3 pm – Preserving the Harvest: Kimchi

Fall has officially begun; cooler temps, the kids back to school — and definite, if subtle, changes at the farmers markets. Alongside the later tomatoes and peaches, apples & root vegetables have arrived, and the winter greens are making a re-appearance, too.

So what’s next in Slow Food’s Preserving the Harvest series? Fermentation! The staff at Slow Food tempted chef Didi Emmons and her trusty assistants into teaching  two kimchi preparations: a chunky, traditional-style kimchi and a more delicately cut local Macomber turnip version.

Kimchi is simple to learn and incredible delicious (especially when homemade). Plus, it’s good for you! Fermented foods have topped the headlines over the past few years for their nutritional and healing properties.

You’ll start class discussing the nutrition side of things, with Didi highlighting the importance of incorporating live macrobiotic foods into our diets, and then use veggies fresh from local farms to prepare the kimchis to take home and ferment.

And you’ll get to taste some previously made kimchis at the end of class, too! Fee is $40, advance registration required.  Click on to www.slowfoodboston.com to register.

    Directions:
Haley House Cafe is located at 12 Dade Street (immediately off Washington Street) in Roxbury. Directions can be found on their website.

  • Saturday, September 12, 6 pm – Cider Hill Farm to Table

Cider Hill Farm in Amesbury, Massachusetts, began in 1978 when Ed and Eleanor Cook purchased the old Battis Dairy Farm with the hope of transforming it into an apple farm. Not long after that, the Cook’s son, Glenn, along with his new bride, Karen, bought the adjacent Vedrani Poultry Farm so they could start a quality life together. Now, with three generations diligently tending to the chores, they bring you a beautiful and diverse farm operation that looks and feels everything but first generation.

We are excited to announce the final Farm to Table Dinner with the Cook family on their grounds. Festivities will begin at 6:00 pm and will include the following:

~ A Four Course Meal prepared by Good Tastes Kitchen, sourcing from Cider Hill Farm and other local purveyors.
