  • Thursdays, April 1 – May 6, 4:00 pm – 6:00 pm – Chinese Brush Painting, Online

    This Massachusetts Horticultural Society online workshop will start off with a demonstration of all of the basic strokes and information about the materials. Then we will progress to paint the following subjects: river reflections, the rabbit, garden pea and yellow butterfly, gladiolus and praying mantis, goldfish, and the rooster. These lessons would work for beginners as well as artists with some experience with Chinese brush painting.     Nan Rumpf grew up in a small Iowa town on the banks of the Mississippi River, where she spent much of her childhood exploring the outdoors on her bicycle and daydreaming under a lilac bush. She graduated from the University of Iowa with a B.A. She currently lives in Wellesley, Massachusetts. She has worked as a professional puppeteer, designing and constructing her own puppets and masks. She organized dramatic arts workshops in public schools and libraries for twenty years. 

    She has studied watercolor painting with Susan Swinand, Jane Goldman, Paul George, Charles Reid, Miles Batt, and Cheng Khee Chee. Her paintings have been exhibited at The DeCordova Museum School Gallery, The Danforth Museum, The Art Complex Museum in Duxbury, The Attleboro Arts Museum, The Wellesley Free Library (First Place Award), The Center For The Arts in Natick, Art on the Common in Needham (First Place Award), The Clinton Art show (Best In Show), Post Road Art (First Place Award in the Abstract Show), The Wellesley Community Center (Margaret Fitzwilliam Award for Excellence in Watercolor), The New England Watercolor Society Show in Cotuit (Woodruff Art Center Award) and her painting Soaring was awarded by George Nick in Concord Art’s Juried Members show.  

    She is a member of the Concord Art Association, the Wellesley Society of Artists, The Rhode Island Watercolor Society and is a signature member of the New England Watercolor Society.   • Friday, February 12, 1:00 pm – 3:30 pm – Watercolor Wintergreens

    Learn about color theory, composition and how to paint from observation, in this Tower Hill Botanic Garden class on February 12 from 1 – 3:30. Winter greens such as pine, eucalyptus, cedar and brightly colored citrus fruit will be the inspiration for our compositions. All material is included. This program will be held indoors in one of our well-ventilated classrooms. Group size will not exceed current state restrictions.

  • Mondays, February 1 – February 22, 2:00 pm – 4:00 pm – Dutch Tulips in Colored Pencil, Online

    Learn how to recreate the stunning tulips painted by Dutch artist Jacob Merrell, 1614-1681. Working with colored pencils, you will be guided by botanical artist Carol Ann Morley, step-by-step from sketch to finished tulips. This four-part Berkshire Botanical Garden class will include live instructional time and class critique and will  focus on observing the underlying form of colored subjects, beginning with tonal graphite studies; how to select the right colors to create a colored palette and techniques for layering colored pencils to achieve the glowing colors of Dutch tulips. Once registered, attendees will be provided with a photograph of the Dutch tulips along with a materials list. $125 for BBG members, $150 for nonmembers.     Carol Ann Morley is an illustrator and dedicated teacher of botanical illustration working in Milton, NH. She founded the Botanical Art Illustration Certificate Program at the New York Botanical Garden and teaches illustration there and at other botanical gardens.

  • Saturday, October 24, 9:00 am – 3:00 pm – Tree Ring Print Making

    In this Massachusetts Horticultural workshop, students will explore the history, culture & practice of traditional relief printing. This October 24 course (rescheduled from March) in the Putnam Building at Elm Bank, 900 Washington Street in Wellesley, explores not only the techniques and applied styles of relief printing, but the botanical significance of working with woody stems. A demonstration of inking and burning materials will begin the course, then students will apply their understanding of materials, techniques, and styles of relief printing to complete their own final piece. Participants will take home a hanging wall art piece & stationery cards which highlight the cross section of a tree. The class begins at 9 am and is taught by Ian T. Meli. Ian Meli is a lifelong artist, woodworker, sculptor, & designer, creating work professionally since 1989. He earned his Bachelor’s in Visual Arts from UMass Boston in 2018. Ian has experience teaching both at the adult education level, as well as the high school vocational level as a carpentry instructor. He has had work displayed at the Harbor Gallery at UMass Boston, as well as in several publications. Ian currently resides in Jamaica Plain, and enjoys riding his bicycle, whether it’s through the Arnold Arboretum for pleasure or commuting to work alongside the Emerald Necklace.

  • Tuesday, October 13, 10:30 am – 1:00 pm – Print to Collage

    Learn a hand printing technique to create prints of leaves, flowers, and botanical designs. Then cut and compose your prints into a collage that is ready to hang on your wall. All materials will be included. This Tuesday, October 13, 2020 from 10:30 am-1:00 pm program will be held under Tower Hill Botanic Garden’s open sided outdoor canopy tent.     Enjoy painting botanical watercolors in a relaxed atmosphere. This online New York Botanical Garden class is designed for both inexperienced students and those who wish to improve their skills.     The beauty of leaves is all around us in the fall. Learn and practice drawing this fantastic foliage and using colored pencils to add their stunning fall colors. A few acorns or seed pods may find their way into your drawings, too! This October 10 Tower Hill Botanic Garden program will be held from 1 – 3 under our open sided outdoor canopy tent. Her education equipped her to be diverse and adaptable, with work appearing in 60 picture books and countless magazines, newspapers and advertisements.

    In this online Harvard Museum of Natural History workshop with artist and educator Erica Beade, participants will explore the versatile medium of colored pencil as they capture the form and beauty of botanicals. After discussing materials and techniques and looking at examples, each participant will experiment with drawing botanical subjects of their own choosing.  Groups will be limited to 10, allowing ample time for individual feedback. All skill levels are welcome.

    Class will be held over Zoom. The link to the class will be sent out to participants two days before the program date. Two date and time choices are October 7 from 1 – 3, and November 7 from 9:30 – 11:30.

    Sunday, September 20, 10:30 am – Magnificent Mushrooms Botanical Illustration

    Explore the multitude of mushrooms popping up in the woods at Tower Hill on September 20 at 10:30 am. This program will be held under our open sided outdoor canopy tent. Group size will not exceed current state restrictions. Sketch as you see them, then snap a photo with your phone and add color with colored pencils while sitting at a table under the activities tent. Learn about showing texture and shading.
