    Capture the beauty and variety of plant forms with pencil and paper in this Harvard Museum of Natural History online workshop with artist and educator Erica Beade. Participants will explore botanical drawing techniques through close observation and practice with contour, gesture, foreshortening and shading. Groups will be limited to 10, allowing ample time for individual feedback. All skill levels are welcome.

    Class will be held over Zoom. The link to the class will be sent out to participants two days before the program date. Choose between September 26 from 9:30 – 11:30, and September 30 from 1 – 3.

    Sunday, September 20, 10:30 am – Magnificent Mushrooms Botanical Illustration

    Explore the multitude of mushrooms popping up in the woods at Tower Hill on September 20 at 10:30 am. This program will be held under our open sided outdoor canopy tent. Group size will not exceed current state restrictions. Sketch as you see them, then snap a photo with your phone and add color with colored pencils while sitting at a table under the activities tent. Learn about showing texture and shading.

    Instructor Carol Schwartz graduated from the Kansas City Art Institute, attending her senior year at Rhode Island School of Design. She earned her MFA in Illustration from the University of Hartford, Connecticut in 2014. Her education equipped her to be diverse and adaptable, with work appearing in 60 picture books and countless magazines, newspapers and advertisements.

  • Wednesdays, September 16 – October 14, 5:30 pm – 8:30 pm – Drafting for Garden Design

    Led by Steven Foster, this Berkshire Botanical Garden five-week studio intensive is essential for those who would like to take their in-garden planning and design to the next level. Learn basic drafting skills necessary to record and effectively communicate scaled site plans. The course, beginning September 16 from 5:30 – 8:30 pm, will cover reference books, drafting supplies, media/paper types, line weights, lettering and scale reading. Drafting demonstrations will familiarize students with professional drawing techniques, and students will begin to draft basic site plans and explore map-making. During the last half of the course, students will learn to develop a landscape graphic palette to illustrate trees, shrubs, perennials and groundcovers, as well as hardscape materials such as stone terraces. This course is designed for beginner to intermediate students. As with all in person classes scheduled during the pandemic, please reconfirm before the class begins, and pre registration is required. $255 for BBG members, $275 for nonmembers.   • Wednesdays, September 16 and 23, 12:30 pm – 4:30 pm – Botanical Printmaking Online

    The Fuller Craft Museum will hold its adult classes online through the fall, due to COVID-19, and a Botanical printmaking class on September 16 and 23 from 12:30 – 4:30 will be no exception, Explore a mixture of non-press printmaking strategies with botanical textures. Combine leaves, sea foam, dried fruits, pressed flowers, pine cones, fern fronds…and even some fabulous fakes, fabrics, and carved versions of botanicals. We’ll be printing into papers, card stocks, vellums, and some textiles for use in art projects like collage, assemblage, and the book arts. Printmaking techniques will include plexi-plate, collagraph, styrofoam block, gelatin plate and paste papers. Bring your own botanical items to add to Cristina’s vast collection, or just bring yourself for some creative exploration. All skill levels and media are welcome. A materials list will be provided.   • Saturday, August 1, and Sunday, August 2, 10:00 am – 4:00 pm – Basic Drawing Skills: Observing Nature

    Drawing is a great way to observe nature and have fun recording what you see. However, it may cease to be fun if you can’t achieve the likeness of your subject or you are not sure how to begin your drawing. This two-day drawing workshop will give you the basic concepts and skills to get started. Under the guidance of Carol Ann Morley you will learn how to look at the natural world and give shape and definition to your subject. Through graphite shading techniques you will understand how to accurately render some basic shapes that underlie any subject you choose to draw, from a plant to landscape, giving depth and meaning to your art. Open to any level student from beginner to those with drawing skills. The Berkshire Botanical Garden workshop will take place on Saturday and Sunday, August 1 & 2, and registration is limited to comply with COVID-19 guidelines.     Carol Ann Morley is an illustrator and dedicated teacher of botanical illustration working in Milton, NH. She founded the Botanical Art Illustration Certificate Program at the New York Botanical Garden and teaches illustration there and at other botanical gardens.

  • Saturday, May 23, 10:00 am – 3:30 pm – Red Grapes Watercolor Online Workshop

    This New York Botanical Garden online workshop on May 23 from 10 – 3:30 will impart the instructor’s method of using dry brush watercolor to replicate the colors, form, and texture of luscious red grapes. The demonstration will include color mixing, working light to dark, layering colors, adding fine detail, using dry brush, and glazing.

Carol Schwartz’s guidance will help you discover correct shapes and tonal values just right for your drawings and you’ll create beautiful memories of your day in the garden conservatories.     Carol Schwartz is an award-winning artist and educator whose work can be found in magazines, posters, galleries, and over 60 nonfiction books. She teaches illustration at Eastern Connecticut State University, New Hampshire Institute of Art, and Tower Hill Botanic Garden.     Through the observation of the unusual forms of various succulent species Carrie Megan will help you discover the sculptural structure of these unique plants. Carrie’s demonstrations and practical techniques will guide you in using a range of graphite leads, from the hardest to the softest, to create an artistic composition of your succulent specimen. This class is suitable for artists at intermediate and advance skill levels.
