Saturday, September 25, 10:00 am – 5:00 pm – Make it and Take it: Hand-tied Wedding Bouquet, Wedding Boutonnieres and Corsages/Wristlets, and Wedding Ceremony Flowers/Centerpieces
In these 3 workshops at the Boston Center for Adult Education that can be taken individually or as a group on Saturday, September 25, students will learn how to select and design fresh flowers for a wedding. This will help save money, add a personal touch, and provide a creative unique experience on your wedding day.
Whether a centerpiece or a full wedding: wearable flowers, church or ceremony flowers, table flowers, bridal bouquets, you will cover all basic techniques. Instructor Laurie Marino will also provide complimentary phone support for questions after class.
Planning for your wedding? Your choice of flowers will enhance the uniqueness of the day. This workshop will cover seasonal considerations, themes, colors, and styles.
Hand-tied bouquets are one of the most popular and modern styles today. Using fresh flowers, ribbon, and embellishments to construct a unique bridal bouquet. This design is also used for bride’s maids and maid of honor bouquets. Step by step instructions will assist you in taking home a beautiful and fragrant bouquet.

With so much fresh local produce readily available in Massachusetts, capture the tastes of the season as Roberta Tarsia, Farmstand & Bakery Manager of Smolak Farms in North Andover, Massachusetts leads you through the necessary steps in the pickling and preserving process. All students will be provided with necessary produce from Smolak Farms as well as jars and all materials, and will leave with their creations! Friday, August 13, 6:00 pm – 9:00 pm – Totally Tomatoes!
Rich, juicy summer tomatoes are perfect in entrees, sandwiches, and side dishes alike. Take advantage of the bounty of summer with terrific seasonal recipes using beefsteak, Roma, and cherry tomatoes. Prepare homemade marinara sauce, Provencal tomato tart, oven-roasted tomatoes, fresh Italian salsa cruda, Mexican salsa, and tomato-basil vinaigrette, while enjoying wines that go with the meals. Also, make several sandwiches, including marinated tomatoes and feta cheese on a French baguette. The $38 tuition ($20 for BCAE members) is in addition to a $16 materials fee for food. Saturday, June 5, 10:00 am – 2:00 pm – Container Gardening for the Urban Dweller
Want to grow flowers, veggies, herbs, even shrubs, but you have no yard or garden space? Don’t despair! If you have a patio, a porch, a few feet of dirt or cement where you can place a couple pots–even your windowsill!-you can experience the pleasures of gardening. If you already have a garden but want to expand your options or move things around without digging, this class is also for you. In this Boston Center for Adult Education class, to be held Saturday, June 5, from 10 – 2 at 122 Arlington Street in Boston, you’ll learn where and how to grow the plants you’ve wanted and get ideas for new and exciting plants. Instructor Iris Weaver will cover containers, soil, feeding and disease control, varieties of plants, growing conditions, and more.
Iris Weaver is an herbalist and educator with over 30 years experience. She has an herbal business in Quincy, making and selling herbal products locally, as well as teaching classes and doing consultations. Iris is also an avid gardener, and grows many of the herbs she works with and uses in her classes. You’ll come away from this class with the basics to start your own container garden and create a little oasis in the city. $45 (BCAE members $39), plus $5 materials cost. Bring your seed catalogues to the Natick Community Organic Farm on Thursday, February 25, from 7:30 – 9:00 pm, for an informative evening around the wood stove with Natick Community Organic Farm Assistant Director Jean-Claude Bourrut. You will talk about variety choices suited for your garden, and will learn to read between the lines of glossy descriptions. Does “foolproof” mean invasive? Does “full sun” mean you’d better plant it in Florida? Does “mildew resistant” mean it will be covered in white powder if you don’t thin 90% of the planting? The cost for all this information will be $27, and you may sign up at www.bcae.org.

Saturday, February 6, 10:00 am – 12:00 noon – Sweet Fun: Making Your Own Maple Syrup
Take a short course on the principles and practice of making maple syrup, from identifying the maple tree to bottling the syrup. Practical advice on simple procedures and equipment for each step will prepare you for an enjoyable late winter outdoor experience and a sweet reward. You will go home with a bucket, lid, spile (you’ll find out), and hook – ready to jump into the upcoming season. This one session event takes place Saturday, February 6, from 10:00 am to 12:00 noon at the Natick Community Organic Farm, and is sponsored by the Boston Center for Adult Education. The cost is $40, and you may register on line at www.bcae.org.

Monday, December 14, 5:30 – 8:30 pm – The Green Home
The Green Movement has entered the mainstream and is rapidly becoming an integral part of the environment. A Green Home (environmentally friendly) house can be more energy efficient than a traditional house. It can be less expensive to operate, last longer, be more comfortable and be healthier than an existing home. While many Green Homes are new construction, or require a major retro fit to an existing home, there are some relatively easy and inexpensive techniques that can be employed so you may live in a greener home environment. This one session course will look at basic green design, green materials and will cover some incentives that can make the process of creating a Green Home environment more palatable. You will find where to locate green materials, familiarize yourself with basic green terms, and learn the process of making your home green.
