Lucky for you, Chefs Leah Dickerson and Loni Zelfon are at the Boston Center for Adult Education on Arlington Street to prove that “comfort” doesn’t have to mean calories. Students will learn how to prepare dishes that feel indulgent and delicious with ingredients that are naturally nutritious.     Intrigued by IPA? Curious about Kolsch?     As temperatures rise, the distance between plates and farms should fall. Spend an afternoon making this happen by cooking up the best farmer’s market produce Massachusetts has to offer, at the Boston Center for Adult Education on Arlington Street in Boston. Chef Diane Manteca will lead you step by step through delightful summer dishes.     Aesthetically, your cramped city apartment may be about the furthest thing from Mr. McGregor’s garden, but if you’ve got a patio, porch or windowsill, you’ve got enough space to grow all the herbs, veggies and flowers they do in the countryside (with far less threat of Peter Rabbit ransacking your crops). Learn where and how to grow the garden you’ve always wanted.   • Saturday, October 13, 10:00 am – 12:00 noon – Make It & Take It: Basic Floral Design 101

    Instructor Laurie Marino will give a class at the Boston Center for Adult Education, 122 Arlington Street, on Saturday, October 13 from 10 – 12.  Tuition is $30 for BCAE members, $35 for non-members, and there is an additional materials cost of $18. Lose the bland bouquets and learn to create floral designs with flair! Using a step-by-step method, you will learn how to choose and process your flowers and what tools and containers work best to create arrangements that boast a distinctive visual appeal. We’ll explore the color, texture, and variety of spring flowers, and discuss the myriad styles of floral design, such as the English garden, Ikebana, symmetrical and asymmetrical design.  Register at www.bcae.org.

  • Saturday, September 22, 9:00 am – 3:45 pm – Take a Shot: A Digital Photography Symposium

    The Boston Center for Adult Education (BCAE) will hold its second annual Take a Shot: Digital Photography Symposium, an educational opportunity for all those with an interest in what goes on behind the camera, on Saturday, September 22 beginning at 9 am.

    Open to students of all levels, the symposium is designed to provide information and technique sharing through various interactive and intensive workshops taught by some of the most recognized photographers in New England including:

    Chris Padgett, Landscape and Event Photographer, Contributor to Stuff Magazine; Diallo Ferguson, Owner of Visual Affects Studios and Producer of A Passion 4 Fashion TV; Mitch Weiss, Artist; Jason Rich, Author of How To Do Everything Digital Photography; Conor Doherty, Photographer; and Joel Veak, Professional Lifestyle and Commercial Photographer, Contributor to Stuff Magazine.

    The day-long symposium, sponsored by Hunt’s Photo and Video, New England’s largest photography retailer, will offer workshops of varying concentrations including: How To Figure Out Your Digital Camera, Digital Photography 101, Picture Process: Photography As Fine Art, Eye Catching Vacation Photos, Professional Lighting Tips And Tricks and About Face: Perfect Portraits.

    Whether students have been shaping their photography skills for years or have just purchased their first camera, this symposium offers something beneficial and exciting for everyone.

    The cost of the symposium is a one-time fee of $125.00 and includes three unique classes, lunch and hand-outs and take-homes from the instructors.  The event will take place at 122 Arlington Street, and you may register online at www.bcae.org.

  • Monday, July 16, 6:00 pm – 8:00 pm – The Art of the Supermarket Bouquet

    The high cost of designer flowers may lead many to settle for less than spectacular displays, but don’t be fooled; amazing arrangements can be created without a steep price tag. On Monday July 16th, 2012 from 6:00PM-8:00PM, students at the Boston Center for Adult Education (BCAE) will learn to craft beautiful, high quality floral displays for the price of a supermarket bouquet!

    In the BCAE’s brand new class, The Art of the Supermarket Bouquet, Instructor Janice Quinn will teach students how to create spectacular arrangements by deconstructing a supermarket bouquet and rebuilding it into a work of art. Students will also acquire the skills needed to replicate the work they see in local produce departments and farmer markets. All that’s needed is a vase brought from home and a little imagination.  Everyone loves the look and smell of floral arrangements and with the help of the BCAE it will be possible to create amazing bouquets for half the cost!

  • Tuesday, June 12, 6:00 pm – 8:00 pm – Walk the Walk: A Walking Tour of the South End

    Bostonians can already talk the talk, but can they walk the walk? Although Boston’s known as America’s walking city, how many people actually stop and smell the roses? It’s time to slow down and look around!

    Beginning in June 2012, the Boston Center for Adult Education (BCAE) is offering a series of interactive walking tours designed to educate and inspire. Guests will have a chance to explore historical neighborhoods on foot while discovering fascinating facts about the community around us!  Whether you’ve just moved to the city and want to get to know your neighborhood, or have lived in the city for years, there’s something for everyone to discover.

    The BCAE tours will be held on three Tuesday evenings throughout the month of June and will include: A Walking Tour of the South End, A Walking Tour of Bay Village and The Theatre District, and A Walking Tour of the Fort Point Channel Neighborhood.  All tours are non-refundable ($20 fee)  and will be held rain or shine.  Registration is necessary.     For the June 12 South End Tour: During the mid-nineteenth century, Boston’s South End developed into a fashionable neighborhood of tree-shaded oval parks and bow front bordered avenues. Explore this delightful neighborhood on foot, and discover the topographical and architectural development of this fascinating, multicultural, urban community. The tour will encompass an 1810 burial ground, an 1830s wooden house tucked away in an alley and a number of charming masonry town houses. You will want to come back on your own to visit the many vibrant shops, galleries and restaurants you’ll pass in the course of the walk.

  • Sunday, February 12, 2:00 pm – 6:00 pm – Glassblowing Flowers and Hearts
