  • Wednesdays, January 20 – March 2, 7:30 pm – 9:30 pm – Winter Botanicals with Pen and Ink

    Create beautiful illustrations in pen and ink in this Boston Center for Adult Education class beginning Wednesday, January 20, from 7:30 – 9:30 and continuing weekly through March 2. Students will learn the techniques of ink application, including line work, stippling, cross-hatching and inkwash. Each week will focus on a different botanical subject. Knowledge of tone and shading in graphite (either through Botanical Illustration in Graphite or previous experience) is recommended for success in this class. You will leave the six-week course with the skills to create your own “masterpieces.” The instructor is Nancy Bentivegna, and the series price is $238 (BCAE members $202), with a materials cost of $15.   • Tuesday, January 5, 6:00 pm – 8:00 pm – Wicked Tales of the Sea and Other Fishy Business

    The Boston Center for Adult Education has assembled a spectacularly seaworthy crew to steer the course for a lively down-to-earth conversation on Tuesday, January 5, from 6 – 8, about the state of the fishing industry in New England and beyond. Dave Marciano, Captain of the FV Hard Merchandise, was just another salty fisherman from Gloucester trying to feed the world until the National Geographic Channel show Wicked Tuna made a him a reality television star. Jim Turner, of Turner’s Seafood, has spent a lifetime dedicated to the business of fish. Join Billy Costa, co-host of NESN’s Dining Playbook as he leads a deep dive into the passions that drive these men and the work that they were born to do. It’s going to be wicked awesome! A reception will follow, hosted by Turner’s Seafood, and featuring delicious bites of the freshest, best-tasting, locally sourced seafood in New England. Simple techniques will be shown to highlight the beautiful early summer flavors. There will be no menu in advance because the class will be based on the ingredients that look best that day! $55 (BCAE members $47) with a $15 materials charge.     A great sauce is the key to a great dish – and while these days you can learn to cook online, perfecting an incredible sauce takes much more than YouTube! Partner with Diane Manteca at the Boston Center for Adult Education at 122 Arlington Street on Thursday, July 30 from 6 – 9 to master wonderful summer sauces.   • Saturday, March 21, 10:00 am – 1:00 pm – Ikebana: The Art of Japanese Flower Arranging

    Learn about the art of Japanese flower arrangement and its rich cultural history in this Boston Center for Adult Education class on Saturday, March 21, from 10 – 1 at their headquarters at 122 Arlington Street in Boston. Applying tools and techniques developed over hundreds of years, you will create your own Ikebana in class and leave with a unique arrangement sure to brighten and beautify your home. The instructor is Russell Bowers. Russell Bowers holds an Instructor Certification from the Ohara School of Ikebana in Japan. He started practicing Ikebana in 2008. He is a Board Member of (N.A.O.T.A.) North American Ohara Teachers Association and a member of Ikebana International Boston Chapter. He has traveled to Japan several times to study Ikebana and has participated in numerous demonstrations and conferences to promote Ikebana. He has a sincere appreciation for Japanese culture and arts, practices Aikido and Zen meditation.

  • Mondays, March 9 – April 13, 7:30 pm – 9:30 pm – Botanical Illustration with Graphite

    Botanical illustration has been a practiced art for hundreds of years. This Boston Center for Adult Education course will give you a brief overview of the history of this art form and will show you the basics of how to draw flowers and plants with shading, perspective and form in graphite. We will begin with basic graphite techniques and move on to simple flower and plant structure. Students will learn about composition, light and methods to make your artwork “alive.” Each week will focus on a different flower provided by the instructor. Medium used will be graphite pencils.

    Materials List:
    11×14 pad Strathmore drawing paper – 400 series (brown or green cover; NOT yellow 300 series)
    11×14 pad tracing paper (Canson preferred)
    Set of graphite pencils (at least 2B, HB and 2H; you do not need more than that) – Faber- Castill or Prismacolor best brands
    Kneaded grey erasers (2)
    Battery operated pencil sharpener (Panasonic KP-4A is BEST; available online but lesser models should be okay)

    The instructor is Nancy Bentivegna. Nancy Bentivegna was born and raised in Ithaca, NY. Art was always her favorite subject in school and she pursued this passion in the art program at Penn State University where she earned her B.A. After college, she worked in marketing and advertising with several large firms in New York. In 1999, she started her own design firm, Kester House, and began creating custom home décor for clients throughout the New York metropolitan area. Her works include furniture, murals, decorative accent pieces and soft goods (pillows, linens, etc.). In 2008 she began the Botanical Art and Illustration Program at the New York Botanical Garden. Ms. Bentivegna completed all course work in June 2011 and then relocated to Boston. She primarily works in watercolor combined with colored pencil for depth and detail. Her works have been displayed in specialty shops in Connecticut and her original botanical artwork is part of private collections from New York to Florida.

    It’s 2015, which means it’s time to get healthy.  Getting healthy does not mean skipping out on the foods you love.   • Monday, October 20, 6:00 pm – 9:00 pm – God of the Gourds: Cooking with Pumpkin

    Pumpkin patches provide the base for this Boston Center for Adult Education class offering dedicated to the gorgeous gourds known for their sweet, autumnal aromatics. We’ll bypass the traditional pumpkin custard pie and head into unchartered pumpkin territory as we explore breads, delicate pastries, and cupcakes based on this bright orange seasonal vegetable-masked-as-fruit. Sweetening it up with cinnamon and making it more savory with salts, you’ll have a cornucopia of pumpkin feasting in this hands-on class. This course, taught by Dustin Rennells on Monday, October 20, from 6 – 9 at the BCAE building, 122 Arlington Street in Boston, will include alcohol and nuts in various recipes, please plan accordingly.
