  • Tuesday, January 15, 7:30 pm – Other People’s Bugs: The Politics and Perceptions of Public Health Pests on Global and Personal Scales

The next meeting of the Cambridge Entomological Club will be held on Tuesday January 15 at 7:30 PM in the Haller Hall of the Harvard Geological Museum (24 Oxford St Rm 102). Please note that in January we are meeting on the third Tuesday of the month and in a different room. Richard Pollack will present a talk entitled “Other people’s bugs: The politics and perceptions of public health pests on global and personal scales”.

Diverse insects find people attractive – and cause other people to shun those endowed with genuine and presumed infestations. Fears of certain insects have long been used as excuses to repress the liberty and opportunities of others, or as political fodder to advance political agenda. Dr. Pollack will highlight several examples pertaining to lice, mosquitoes, bed bugs and yet other of his favorite creatures to scratch the surface of this complex topic.

The meeting is free and open to the public. Snacks will be provided and you are also welcome to join us at 6:00 PM for an informal pre-meeting dinner at the West Side Lounge restaurant.

  • Tuesday, November 13, 7:30 pm – Insects on the Edge of America: Exploration and Discovery on the Southern Border of the USA

The next meeting of the Cambridge Entomological Club will be held on Tuesday November 13 at 7:30 PM in room 101 of the Museum of Comparative Zoology. Joshua Rose will present a talk entitled “Insects on the Edge of America: exploration and discovery on the southern border of the USA.”

Josh worked for three and a half years as head biologist of the World Birding Center in the Lower Rio Grande Valley of extreme southern Texas. During that time he met entomologists collecting and describing species new to science, naturalists exploring the biology of little-known insects, and photographers hoping to document rare tropical vagrants that had wandered across the border from Mexico. He will share some of what they have been discovering down there.

The meeting is free and open to the public. Snacks will be provided and you are also welcome to join us at 6:00 PM for an informal pre-meeting dinner at West Side Lounge Restaurant.

  • Saturday, May 19, 1:00 pm – Spring Hike

On Saturday May 19th the Cambridge Entomological Club is co-sponsoring a Spring Hike with the Friends of Wachusett Mountain and the Department of Conservation and Recreation. The hike begins at 1:00 pm and the exact location is yet to be determined. Our role is to help people look for insects along the way. As for our fall walk, this is a catch-and-release program so keep collecting to a minimum if you find something you want to take home. Please bring nets and other collecting equipment if you have them available. Entomological Club member Scott Smyers is the President of the Friends of Wachusett Mountain and has been working to integrate outreach, research and conservation at Wachusett Mountain. There will be an update with the location of the walk. Many of us will be driving from the Boston area so there will be many opportunities for carpooling.

Visit the Friends of Wachusett Mountain website for more information: http://www.friendsofwachusett.org/.

This hike will be a lot of fun and Club President Jessica Walden-Gray is looking forward to seeing what will be found in such an unusual spring. Please invite friends and family and keep your fingers crossed for warm weather!  Picture below, taken at Wachusett Mountain, from www.growingwithplants.com.
