  • Monday, April 22 – 5% for Earth Day

Boston has long been known for its commitment to preserving green space. The Boston Common, The Public Garden, the Emerald Necklace, the creation of the Charles River Basin, the clean-up of Boston Harbor, the revitalization of the Waterfront, the completion of Big Dig and the opening of the Rose Kennedy Greenway are but a few examples of the Commonwealth and the City’s dedication to public, open space throughout the years. All of these improvements were made possible through the commitment of a number of non-profit organizations that work hand in hand with our local, state and national government to keep our parks and open spaces in shape.

For Earth Day 2013, five of these non-profits (the Charles River Conservancy, the Emerald Necklace Conservancy, the Esplanade Association, the Friends of Public Garden, and the Rose Kennedy Greenway Conservancy) are joining forces to bring 5% for Earth Day to Boston. The campaign, which has seen three years of success in Austin, TX and expanded to the Houston, TX area in 2012, will ask Boston-area retailers to donate 5% of their gross proceeds on Monday April 22, 2013 to a coalition of non-profits that support projects in Boston’s parks and open spaces.

Kickass Cupcakes, Roxy’s Grilled Cheese, Momogoose, Mei Mei Street Kitchen, Henrietta’s Table, SkinHealth Centers, Shuckin Truck, and The Chubby Chickpea are among the participating businesses. Go to www.give5Boston.org for a complete list.

  • Saturday, April 20, 9:00 am – 12:00 pm – 14th Annual Earth Day Charles River Cleanup

Want to make a difference in your community? Join thousands of volunteers from throughout the watershed for the 14th Annual Earth Day Charles River Cleanup! Every year the Cleanup engages over 3,000 volunteers to beautify the Charles River and its tributaries by picking up trash and cleaning the riverbanks at over 100 sites from Milford to Boston. The Esplanade Association is now registering volunteers to participate in the Cleanup!

Last year volunteers helped remove 40 tons of trash along the Charles River. The Esplanade Association provides volunteers with cleanup supplies, snacks, and a free t-shirt. Following the Cleanup you are invited to a volunteer appreciation picnic at the Hatch Shell with music, games provided by Knucklebones, and other fun. Visit our website, www.esplanadeassociation.org, to find out more. March 14th is the last day to register to participate in the Cleanup. Spots on the Esplanade fill up very fast. We are already at 350 volunteers and we often meet our volunteer maximum of 600 people well before March 14th, so please register now!

  • April 17 – April 18 – Global Days of Service, Earth Day 2010

The Global Days of Service will feature Volunteer Actions by tens of thousands of global participants, from April 17 – 18, 2010. Produced with the help of Earth Day Network, along with local community organizations and governments, the activities will address current challenges and will help cities and organizations streamline their energy needs, and ‘green up’ their communities. Suitable for individuals of all ages, including children and families, these activities encourage active lifestyles and healthful living, while also connecting volunteers with the green solutions.  This year marks the 40th Anniversary of Earth Day, and you may find more information about local events at www.earthday.net/earthday2010.
