  • Sunday, September 10, 10:30 am – 12:00 pm – Baby, It’s Cold Outside

    In this Massachusetts Horticultural Society workshop on Sunday, September 10 from 10:30 – noon, we will discuss both end of season garden tasks as well as planning for overwintering crops. Participants will learn about what type of debris to remove or leave behind and cover cropping and mulching options to improve your soil over the winter. Soil testing and other fall soil amendments will be considered. Finally, a demonstration will be given on how to construct a simple winter row cover to protect crops and extend your harvest season. Crop variety selection will be discussed. Meet at the Seed to Table Garden at The Gardens at Elm Bank, 900 Washington Street, Wellesley.

  • Sunday, August 20, 10:30 am – 12:00 noon – Back to School Gardens

    Join Hannah Traggis, Mass Hort’s Seed to Table Educator, on Sunday, August 20 at 10:30 am at The Gardens at Elm Bank in Wellesley and get a jump start on your school garden! Topics for this hands-on workshop include: direct sowing and transplanting seedlings, selecting crops to plant in the fall, mulching, weeding, maintaining and using those crops, and season extension. You will get to practice all of these in the garden and learn to construct a simple and inexpensive season extending bed cover that will allow you and your students to enjoy your garden well into the late fall. A few curriculum ideas will also be discussed. Take home several seedlings including lettuce, kale, spinach and more, that are ready to plant on the first day of school.

  • Sunday, July 30, 10:30 am – 12:00 noon – What’s Buggin’ Me?

    Join Massachusetts Horticultural Society on Sunday, July 30 at 10:30 am for a stroll through the vegetable gardens at Elm Bank, 900 Washington Street in Wellesley, with Sue Scheufele from the UMass Extension Vegetable Program. We will learn to identify common insect and disease pests, and the damage they can cause to vegetable and herb plants. We will discuss organic management strategies that are available to home gardeners including use of mulches, row covers, bio-based pesticides and more.

  • Sunday, July 23, 10:00 am – 11:30 am – Planting for Hummingbirds

    Hummingbirds are among the most unique birds in the class of Aves. They are a major pollinator in the ecosystem and have co-evolved with specific ornithophilous plants in the American content. On Sunday, July 23 at The Gardens at Elm Bank, beginning at 10 am, Amir Ghazanfari will discuss Planting for Hummingbirds. Amir Ghazanfari, a biologist and a researcher, has been studying and monitoring Ruby-Throated Hummingbird, in the state of Massachusetts, for the past decade.   • Tuesday, July 25, 12:00 noon – 5:00 pm – Bressingham Garden Symposium 2017

    Join the Massachusetts Horticultural Society on July 25 to celebrate the 10th Anniversary of this beautiful garden at Elm Bank! They have arranged a day led by the experts, presenting on how you can create a unique four-season landscape that is truly inspirational. Garden designer and creator, Adrian Bloom, plantsman of the Bressingham and Foggy Bottom Gardens in England, will talk about the garden’s design intent and year-long appeal. The symposium will also feature Michael Dirr, America’s top expert on woody plants; Kerry Ann Mendez, garden design, speaker and author; and Mal Condon, hydrangea expert.

    And, you’ll want to stay for the 10th Anniversary celebration of the Bressingham Garden at Elm Bank- wine and hors d’ oeuvres in the garden.

    Plant Sale: 11:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. Suzanne Thatcher, Russell’s Garden Center, offers you an opportunity to take home the plants that inspire you. A portion of the day’s proceeds will go to support Mass Hort and future projects in the Bressingham Garden.

  • Tuesdays and Thursdays, July 18 – August 8, 6:00 pm – 8:00 pm – Permaculture Design

    In this seven-session tutorial course to be held in the Cheney Room of the Education Building at Elm Bank, 900 Washington Street in Wellesley, Marie Stella, instructor, permaculturist and landscape designer, will introduce you to the principles and application of permaculture —a natural, ecological, and organic approach to land management and landscape design. This class is being offered through the Stockbridge School at UMass, and can be taken for 1 credit. MUST PRE-REGISTER.

    Classes will be held Tuesdays and Thursdays, July 18-August 8.

    Spring’s flowers produce a unique, light honey in New England, yet we are only just beginning to learn which flowers are the true sources for this liquid gold. On Tuesday, July 11 beginning at 1:30 pm, engage with harvesting tools and techniques to collect honey and beeswax together with The Best Bees Company team of bee experts, led by Noah Wilson-Rich, Ph.D. The event will take place at The Gardens at Elm Bank, 900 Washington Street in Wellesley.

    Noah Wilson-Rich, Ph.D. is a biologist, professor, NYTimes & LATimes contributor, two-time TEDx speaker, beekeeper, and author of The Bee: A Natural History published by Princeton University Press. Noah’s research focuses on bee immunology. Noah is the Founder and Chief Scientific Officer of The Best Bees Company, a beekeeping service that delivers, installs, and manages beehives for residential and commercial properties nation-wide. Proceeds from The Best Bees Company go toward research to improve bee health.   • Thursday, July 13, 7:00 pm – 8:30 pm – Art & Spirit in the Garden: Incorporating Sculpture

    Karin Stanley gathers inspiration from her love of poetry, art, and sculpture and from her travels and musings in Ancient Ireland, Scotland and other countries. She creates meditative spaces, areas for serenity, healing, reflection, dynamic impact, drama, humor or allegory. Her background as an artist/sculptor and garden designer and a graduate of the Radcliffe landscape design and history program enables her to share some of her process and practical ideas and advice on how to use sculpture and artistic enhancements in your own garden, community or public project. This Thursday, July 13 Massachusetts Horticultural Society lecture will take place at Elm Bank, 900 Washington Street in Wellesley, beginning at 7 pm, and is $12 for Mass Hort members, $20 for nonmembers.     Old strawberry bed not so productive as you’d like? Always wanted a strawberry bed but don’t know where to begin?

During the summer excitement, it can be challenging to remember to return to these early-season lovelies!
