  • Wednesday, January 25, 9:30 am – School Gardens

    The Wellesley Garden Study Group in collaboration with Massachusetts Horticultural Society and Wellesley Green Schools will host a program on School Gardens at the Parkman Educational Center, Mass Hort at Elm Bank, 900 Washington Street, Wellesley on January 25th . Those interested to attend may join us 9:30A.M. for refreshments and announcements, and the program will begin at 10:30A.M. Free and open to the public.

    The program School Gardens will be an illustrated history of of the school garden movement of the 19th century America and its further development. John Forti will discuss the heirloom and native plants of our region and how they can be integrated into the school curriculum from seed to table. The discussion will also be on how a school yard can enrich both habitat and community.

    John Forti is the Director of Horticulture for the Massachusetts Horticultural Society. He also serves as the Governor of Slow Food Massachusetts. He was formerly the Director of Horticulture at Strawbery Banke Museum and Plimoth Plantation Museum. Over 20,000 follow his blog as “The Heirloom Gardener – John Forti” on Facebook.

  • Tuesday, January 17, 1:30 pm – 3:00 pm – A Gardener’s Travels: The Royal National Rose Society’s Garden of the Rose

    On Tuesday, January 17 from 1:30 – 3 at Elm Bank, Mirjana Toyn will present a virtual tour of the Royal National Rose Society’s rose gardens, highlighting rose cultivars, rose trials, and integrated garden design. She will discuss their use of companion planting, vertical interest, and old garden roses, as well as the history of the garden. She will also answer any rose questions and give recommendations for other English gardens to visit.

    Mirjana Toyn is the immediate Past President of the Connecticut Rose Society and has served on their Board in various capacities for nearly 10 years. She is a Consulting Rosarian as well as the Yankee District Membership and Old Garden Rose Chair for the American Rose Society. Her regular column on Old Garden Roses has won numerous awards over four consecutive years and is published in various newsletters nationally and abroad. She grows over 100 roses in her own small, suburban garden and lectures regularly on various rose related topics.

  • Thursday, January 12, 7:00 pm – 8:30 pm – Introduction to Fermentation

    On Thursday, January 12, from 7 – 8:30 in the Parkman Room at The Gardens at Elm Bank, learn how to make your own lacto-fermented kraut, kimchi, and kvass. We’ll look at the science behind beneficial bacteria, pro-biotics and pre-biotics, and how bacteria can transform food. We’ll go over the basic steps in the fermentation process and share recipe ideas that include a variety of fruits and vegetables. If time permits, we’ll take a quick peek at mixed ferments like kombucha and kefir. Massachusetts Horticultural Society Member Cost: $12; Non Member Cost $20. Register online at www.masshort.org.

  • Wednesday, December 21, 1:00 pm – 3:00 pm – Winter Solstice Walk

    Make the most of the shortest day of the year! Get outside and take a walk along the Charles River with the Massachusetts Horticultural Society, starting at Elm Bank, 900 Washington Street, on Wednesday, December 21 from 1 – 3.

    Mass Hort Educator Katie Folts will lead a walk on the trails at Elm Bank, identify plants, and discuss how these plants have adapted to survive cold winters. $12 for Mass Hort members, $20 for nonmembers. Telephone 617-933-4973 to register, or for more information, and dress warmly.

  • Tuesday, December 6, 4:00 pm – 5:30 pm – Landscape Lighting

    On Tuesday, December 6 from 4 – 5:30 at Elm Bank, 900 Washington Street in Wellesley, Joe Biagioni will review the equipment available to stage your own landscape lighting. Homeowners can be quite successful with what is available on the market, and Joe will explain what is needed and how to use it in your landscape.

    Joe Biagioni of Arbor Alliance in Douglas, MA is a senior arborist; he has worked in and around the tree business over 25 years. He has also taught courses for Clark University and Tower Hill, for local organizations, and for Massachusetts Horticultural Society.   • Tuesday, November 29, 7:00 pm – 8:00 pm – Giving Tuesday Bulb Planting

    Bring your friends to Elm Bank on Tuesday, November 29 from 7 – 8 and the Massachusetts Horticultural Society will have wine, music and cheer, plus everything you need to prepare two holiday bulb planters.  Take one home, and Mass Hort will give the other to a resident at a nearby assisted living home.  It’s the perfect way to partake in Giving Tuesday!  Elm Bank is located at 900 Washington Street in Wellesley.   • Friday, November 25 – Sunday, December 11 – Festival of Trees

    Massachusetts Horticultural Society’s Festival of Trees showcases dozens of trees and the Snow Village at Elm Bank for children and adults to enjoy.

    This annual festival takes place from the end of November through the first two weeks of December at Mass Hort’s Elm Bank property.

    The Festival of Trees, displayed in the Hunnewell Carriage House, offers beautifully decorated holiday trees that are donated and decorated by local businesses, garden clubs, and individuals. Visitors vote with their raffle tickets, in hopes of being the tree winner at the end of the festival. Visitors can also enjoy the decorated buildings and grounds at Elm Bank with a stroll or a horse-drawn wagon ride. For the young at heart, there are Santa Visits and other activities.

    Snow Village at Elm Bank is a wonderful addition to the holiday spirit of the Festival of Trees. Bill Meagher of Needham graciously donated the product of his thirteen year “hobby” of building Christmas villages and trains. Massachusetts Horticultural Society is delighted to share his enchanting displays with model trains winding through villages and vignettes, including Christmas in the City (Boston of course!), Fenway Park, and hundreds of decorated houses and lights.   • Tuesday, November 15, 1:30 pm – 3:00 pm – Apples of New England

    Please join apple historian and orchardist John Bunker at The Gardens at Elm Bank, 900 Washington Street in Wellesley on Tuesday, November 15 at 1:30 pm for an entertaining history of New England’s iconic fruit. John will take us back 400 years to the first Massachusetts orchards, from the times when everyone made cider to the introduction of widespread grafting, from the era of the small self sufficient farm to the commodity orchards of today. He’ll tell us about the famous Massachusetts varieties, where they originated, how they disappeared and the recent efforts to rescue them.

    John grew up in Concord, Massachusetts and Palo Alto, California. He’s lived in Palermo, Maine for the past 45 years. There he farms and tends orchards with Cammy Watts. He has coordinated nursery sales at Fedco Trees since its beginning in 1984. He is active in the Maine Organic Farmers and Gardeners Association and directs the Maine Heritage Orchard in Unity.   • Thursday, November 10, 1:30 pm – 3:00 pm – Herbs for the Holidays: The Science of Stuffing and Beyond

    Join the Massachusetts Horticultural Society at Elm Bank on Thursday, November 10 at 1:30 and learn about the historical uses of herbs in food preservation and the modern day understanding of their benefits for healthy living. Dr. Mohsen Meydani of Tufts University and John Forti, Mass Hort Director of Horticulture and Education, will use herbs from our gardens to present the beneficial uses of herbs and a hands-on component allows you to pot up a fresh herb plant to take home for the holidays!

    This lecture is the latest offering from the collaboration between Massachusetts Horticultural Society and the Jean Mayer USDA Human Nutrition Research Center on Aging to bring news of the most current scientific research and how-to horticultural skills in regards to nutritional benefits of plants.   • Sundays, July 10 – October 9, 10:00 am (except September 4) – Seed to Table

    Join Seed to Table educator Hannah Traggis every Sunday at 10 a.m.at Elm Bank, 900 Washington Street in Wellesley, now through Columbus Day, to explore our food system and discover the joys of backyard gardening. Learn skills like seed saving, harvesting, and preparing and preserving fresh foods. Each week will be different and connected to the season and natural growing. Craft your own take-away each week. This is a drop-in program, no pre-registration required.

    Mass Hort Members: Free, Non-Members: $5 Please note: there will be no Seed to Table programming on September 4.
