  • Friday, November 5, 6:30 – 9:30 pm – 2010 Urban Barn Dance & Harvest Supper

    The Federation of Mass Farmers Markets will hold its 2010 Annual Urban Barn Dance & Harvest Festival on Friday, November 5, from 6:30 – 9:30 pm at the Dante Alighieri Italian Cultural Center, 41 Hampshire St., Cambridge (Kendall Square).  Proceeds of the evening will benefit FMFM, and tickets cost $50. Guests will toast the hard work of their favorite farmers with a hearty locally grown supper, and then continue the celebration with live music and dancing. Music will be provided again this year by Sean Smith and Friends, and contra caller David Titus returns to lead us in dances that new and experienced dancers will enjoy. . Chef Bob Sargent of flora restaurant is once again generously donating his time to create mouth-watering pork dishes as well as hearty sides to accompany them. There should be plenty of food for hungry vegetarians as well! Guests will also enjoy a silent auction with prizes donated by local businesses.   • Saturday, September 25 – Sunday, September 26, 10 – 5 – 12th Annual Hancock Shaker Village Country Fair

    The Country Fair at Hancock Shaker Village on Saturday and Sunday, September 25 – 26 from 10 – 5 celebrates the bounty of the harvest with agricultural demonstrations, wagon rides, a fabulous Farmers Market, and huge tents full of the work of the best local and regional crafters and artisans. Come out to the farm and see all the Country Fair has to offer. At the Country Fair, vendors fill the Village with delightful fresh produce, finished farm products, and crafts of all sorts. The Farmers Market tents boast vegetables, flowers, maple sugar treats and hand-made cheeses. Artisans have furniture, Shaker style oval boxes, original paintings, candles and hand-woven textiles available for purchase. Plan plenty of browsing time for this amazing marketplace! Don’t miss the Food Tent with area restaurants and brews! Try your hand as a Shaker Baker in our Country Fair Pie Contest – in 2009, thirteen pies were entered, and this year’s judges include New Yorker writer Susan Orlean, Berkshire Living editor Lesley Ann Beck, Berkshire Eagle executive editor Tim Farkas, and RuralIntelligence.com co-founder Marilyn Bethany.  A display of quilts in the Round Stone Barn ell has become an integral part of the Country Fair each year.  Over 60 antique and newly made quilts are displayed in this juried show, fine examples of craftsmanship and tradition.   • Saturday, August 7, 10:00 am – 4:00 pm – Massachusetts Marketplace Festival

    Join the Massachusetts Horticultural Society for the Annual Massachusetts Marketplace Festival on Saturday, August 7, from 10 to 4, at Elm Bank Horticulture Center.  The event will feature the finest products from the region’s fields, farms, gardens and kitchens, with over 60 vendors offering new and locally produced food products, crafts, garden ornaments and gifts.  There will also be a plant sale and garden tours.  Admission is $6 for adults, $4 for MassHort members, and $2 for children under 12.  Tickets are available on site the day of the event.  Massachusetts Marketplace Festival is produced by MassHort with in-kind support from the Massachusetts Department of Agricultural Resources and the Massachusetts Specialty Food Association.  For more information, log on to www.masshort.org, or call  617-933-4981.

  • Thursday, July 8, 10:00 am – 3:00 pm – Falmouth Garden Stroll on the Bay

    Across the country there is a burgeoning awareness and concern for the types of food we eat and how it is raised, grown, hunted, and gathered. Our daily food choices have become inextricably linked to issues of personal health, food insecurity, local and global economies, sense of place, climate change, and cultural and environmental sustainability. In short, food has become newly politicized. Given the pervading lack of market information regarding the above elements, how might we envision, support, and engage in a local, sustainable, and just food system and network operating at maximum capacity? From the restaurant and farmers market to the subsistence-modeled and community farms and gardens, the four local leaders for the panel will inform and inspire attendees on current best and potential next practices at the personal, professional, and collective level. A question & answer session will follow the presentations.   • Friday, December 4 – Sunday, December 6 – Holly Folly

    Have a Holly Folly Weekend – it’s the best time in P’town.  The festivities begin on Friday, December 4 at 5 pm at the Land’s End Holiday Gala at the Land’s End Inn, 22 Commercial Street.  Free admission.  This decade-old tradition marks the opening to the Annual Holly Folly Festival in Provincetown. Come enjoy complimentary hors d’oeuvres, cocktails, homemade cookies and great company at this annual holiday celebration open to the public and free of charge at this historic seaside inn in Provincetown’s West End.     Saturday, from 11 – 4, enjoy the Holly Folly Farmer’s Market in the Ryder Street Parking Lot, where you will  find wreaths, woodland greens, holly, pine roping, winter vegetables, jams, and other seasonal products.  The Holly Folly Sing-A-Long with Casey & Denise, from 5:30 – 8:30 pm, is also free at the Porchside Bar at the Gifford House Inn, 9 Carver Street.  Concerts and performances continue in the evening.  A Sunday cookie party concludes the festivities.

    Join USA Thanksgiving in Plymouth, Massachusetts, for the Edible South Shore’s Farmers Market on Sunday, November 22 from 11 am – 3 pm.  There is no better way to cook your Thanksgiving dinner than by using locally grown fresh produce and foods.  Vendors will offer fresh fruits, vegetables, herbs, eggs, cut flowers and plants.  Local food crafters (their word – ah, the evolution of the English language) will bring cheeses, gelato, yogurt, jams, sauces, honey, grain side dishes, breads, baked goodies and other handmade sundries, such as soaps and herbal infusions.

    There will be two Berkshire Grown Holiday Farmers Markets on Saturday, November 21.  The first will be held in Great Barrington at the old firehouse on Castle Street from 9:00 am – 2:00 pm.  The second will be set up at the Williams College Field House on Latham Street in Williamstown, from 10:00 am – 2:00 pm.

    Berkshire Grown envisions a community where healthy farms define the open landscape, where a wide diversity of fresh, seasonal food and flowers continue to be readily available to everyone, and where we celebrate our agricultural bounty by buying from our neighboring family farms and savoring their distinctive Berkshire harvest.

  • Friday, October 9 – Sunday, October 11 – Warner Fall Foliage Festival

    The 62nd Annual Warner Fall Foliage Festival opens at 6 pm on Friday, October 9, continuing through 6 pm Sunday, October 11.  The Festival is Warner’s invitation to share the natural splendor of New Hampshire’s vibrant autumn colors while enjoying food, entertainment, arts and crafts along the main streets of Warner, located 18 miles northwest of Concord, exit 9 off Route 89.  The Festival is organized and operated by hundreds of local volunteers.  All money raised is spent on community projects.

    The Program includes open class corn competitions, The Moose Exhibit “Forever Locked – The Battling Bull Moose of Fowlertown,” arts and crafts farmer’s market, pie eating contests, music, parades, and the Granite State Cloggers.  For directions and more information, log on to www.wfff.org.
