  • Tuesday, October 13, 2 – 4:30 pm – Afternoon at the Farmer’s Market

    Join Leah Bloom and the Boston Center for Adult Education (122 Arlington Street, Boston) for this hands-on trip to the Farmer’s Market, followed by a tasting of unusual fruits and vegetables and cooking demonstration, where you’ll learn to cook several colorful dishes with a bounty of farm fresh ingredients.  The cost is $45 plus a materials fee of $18.  BCAE members pay $39 plus the materials fee.  For more information, and to register, log on to www.bcae.org.

  • Saturday, September 26 – Sunday, September 27, 10 – 5 – 12th Annual Hancock Shaker Village Country Fair

    The Country Fair at Hancock Shaker Village celebrates the bounty of the harvest with agricultural demonstrations, wagon rides, a fabulous Farmers Market, and huge tents full of the work of the best local and regional crafters and artisans. Come out to the farm and see all the Country Fair has to offer! At the Country Fair, vendors fill the Village with delightful fresh produce, finished farm products, and crafts of all sorts. The Farmers Market tents boast vegetables, flowers, maple sugar treats and hand-made cheeses. Artisans have furniture, Shaker style oval boxes, original paintings, candles and hand-woven textiles available for purchase. Plan plenty of browsing time for this amazing marketplace! Don’t miss the Food Tent with area restaurants and brews! Try your hand as a Shaker Baker in our Country Fair Pie Contest! We have both professional and amateur categories, with judging held on Saturday afternoon, September 26th, 2009. Warm up your rolling pins! A display of quilts in the Round Stone Barn ell has become an integral part of the Country Fair each year. About 45 antique and newly made quilts are displayed in this juried show, fine examples of craftsmanship and tradition. You can submit a quilt for exhibition!   • Tuesday, August 18, 11:30 a.m. – 6:30 p.m. – Boston Public Market

    The Boston Public Market sponsored by Rodale on Dewey Square returns to the Greenway.  Together, Rodale Inc. (publishers of Organic Gardening Magazine) and the Rose F. Kennedy Greenway Conservancy are supporting the Boston Public Market and its farmers as they bring a robust seasonal market to Dewey Square Plaza.  In addition to fresh produce, farmers will sell eggs, cheeses, meats, breads, baked goods and other wholesome products grown or made in Massachusetts.  As the market season progresses, the Conservancy will provide live entertainment, seating and other amenities.  An authoritative resource for information on sustainable practices and wellness, Rodale will assist shoppers in making healthy choices through an iinteractive kiosk and related website.  The market will be open every Tuesday and Thursday from 11:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. through October.  For more information, log on to www.hellogreenway.org.

  • Saturday, August 8, 10 – 4 – Massachusetts Marketplace Festival

    Join the Massachusetts Horticultural Society for the 13th Annual Massachusetts Marketplace Festival on Saturday, August 8, from 10 to 4, at Elm Bank Horticulture Center.  The event will feature the finest products from the region’s fields, farms, gardens and kitchens, with over 60 vendors offering new and locally produced food products, crafts, garden ornaments and gifts.  There will also be a plant sale and garden tours.  Admission is $6 for adults, $4 for MassHort members, and $2 for children under 12.  Tickets are available onsite the day of the event.  Massachusetts Marketplace Festival is produced by MassHort with in-kind support from the Massachusetts Department of Agricultural Resources and the Massachusetts Specialty Food Association.  For more information, log on to www.masshort.org, or call Kathy Thomas at 617-933-4981.

  • Friday, August 7 – Sunday, August 9 – Northeast Organic Farming Association 35th Annual Summer Conference

    The 35th Annual Northeast Organic Farming Association Summer Conference will take place Friday through Sunday, August 7-9, at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst campus. Choose from150 workshops on organic farming, gardening, land care, sustainability and homesteading.   Teen and children’s programs will also be available. A sampling of workshop titles include Organic Lawn & Turf Course, Community Farm Workshop Track, and Mass. Grass Grazing School.  The Keynote speakers are Paul Stamets, mushroom expert and author of Mycelium Running: How Mushrooms Can Help Save the World, and Will Allen, founder and CEO of Growing Power, an organization that brings knowledge about sustainable food systems to urban areas.  Entertainment will include dancing, a country fair, a barter event, and a farmer’s market.  Dorm rooms may be reserved, camping spots will be available, and wholesome organic meals will be served.   • Wednesday, July 15, 11 – 3 – 8th Annual Arts on the Arcade Kickoff

    For the 8th year, Arts on the Arcade will provide summer entertainment at the community arcade from July 8th to August 26th, adjacent to Cambridge Street and City Hall Plaza on Wednesdays from 11am – 3pm.

    A three-tiered approach gives the public a rich vibrant market experience through (1) local Visual Artists exhibiting and selling their original works of art. People will have the opportunity to peruse the booths of local artists and to interact with the various artists who have created the artwork on display. (2)The Farmers Market selling their own produce. Vendors will be selling everything from flowers, bread, cheese and vegetables.(3)Local Performers providing a summer beat though a diverse program of entertainment. After visiting vendors, people can sit down and absorb performances by local performance artists.

  • Friday, May 22, 11 – 6 – Copley Square Farmers’ Market

    The Boston Farmers Market Season kicked off this week with the opening of the Copley Square Farmers’ Market. This market will be in the park from 11 am to 6 pm on Tuesdays and Fridays from now until November 24th. Mass Farmers Markets were recently selected as a “Local Hero” in the category of non-profit organizations, in recognition of their outstanding contribution to the local foods movement in greater Boston.  For more information, log on to www.massfarmersmarkets.org.

  • Thursdays, May 21 – October 29, 11-6 – Prudential Center Farmer’s Market

    Prudential Center owner Boston Properties this week opens a farmers’ market on the building’s cement plaza bordering Boylston Street.  The market, which will run on Thursdays from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., is directly managed by 14 vendors, including six to eight farmers. Vendors who have signed on to the project sell products like Asian greens, mozzarella cheese, chocolates, bread, baked goods, and high-end desserts.  According to The Boston Globe, it has also sparked interest from Legal Seafoods, whose Prudential Center executive chef, Kevin Watson, has committed to buying fresh foods from the market to use in his cooking.  Sel De La Terre will be doing a version of their Boulangerie with salads, sandwiches, bread, pastry and produce from Frank McClelland’s new farm, and L’Espalier has also expressed interest.  Vendors include Bolton Flats Asian Greens, Taza chocolate, When Pigs Fly bread, Stillman meat, Gilson herbs (one of our Garden Club speakers from long ago), and many more who will be added as the season progresses.
