  • Saturday, September 16, 11:00 am – Floral Design: Essentials for Arranging

    Join Lorraine Walsh and Mary Lou Ashur from Artistry Floral at the Massachusetts Horticultural Society Gardens at Elm Bank on September 16 at 11 am to create your own floral display to take home or give away.

    Do you want to see your rooms featured in Elle Décor or House Beautiful magazines? The “essentials for arranging” is for you. Together we will look at some of the characteristics of American Tradition Design and explore how the Elements of Design dictate patterns and shapes.  This class is good for beginners with no flower experience necessary but will also allow the experienced arranger a deeper exploration into naturalistic forms and patterns.

    In 2016, Lorraine Walsh and Mary Lou Ashur met as floral associates at the Museum of Fine Arts, in Boston. There, studying fundamentals of floristry and working in teams, they designed and executed a variety of art-inspired floral arrangements for certain museum locations as well as restaurants, special events, and holiday installations. Now in the marketplace, they are committed to producing artistic floral creations, using only the highest quality flowers and plants, from local growers and flower producers around the world.

    They are also focused on sustainable floral design and eco-friendly floral purchases from wearables to table arrangements, bouquets, and large installations They are inspired to produce arrangements that are unique and designed to honor their clients’ significant events respecting their individual styles while sourcing seasonal flowers and respecting the environment.

    Join Lorraine Walsh and Mary Lou Ashur from Artistry Floral on June 3 in this Massachusetts Horticultural Society workshop and create your own floral display to take home or give away. In this session we’ll take it to another level with Statement arrangements. Suitable for a sideboard or entry way, a dramatic way to welcome your guests – or just make your home more fun. You’ll design a large arrangement to dazzle your family and guests.

  • Wednesdays, February 8 – March 15, 7:30 pm – 9:00 pm Eastern – The Art of Floral Design, Online

    Join floral artist Arrin Sutliff to explore the spectrum of floral design. Sourcing (with a focus on sustainability), making the most of seasonal flowers, creating centerpieces, wiring techniques, and photographing your work are all among the practical areas covered. 

    Designed for students of all levels, beginners can gain a full understanding of what floral design entails, while more experienced students can continue to advance their skills as they create their own work. A supply list of tools and flowers is available for participants who would like a hands-on experience, but all are welcome to relax and follow along as Sutliff creates some beautiful designs step by step. This Smithsonian Associates six part class is held on Zoom to allow for patron and instructor interaction online. The program will NOT be recorded. $155 for Smithsonian members, $185 for nonmembers.   • Mondays, July 19 – August 2, 6:00 pm – 8:30 pm – Color Theory for Floral Design, Online

    Colors—like flowers themselves—evoke feeling and sentiment, and set the mood. Explore the role of color in floral design using a spectrum of flowers. This online New York Botanical Garden three part online course gives you a solid grounding in color theory, while highlighting the latest hues and color combinations.

    Materials: Students will be expected to purchase flowers before each class based on the instructor’s color guidelines. Registrants will be emailed a week before the class begins. This course requires the purchase of additional materials. Please refer to the Materials List when registering for more information.

In each episode, the budding botanical artists are put to the test in both individual and team challenges that determine whose stems get cut – and who remains in the running for the career-changing $100,000 grand prize to kickstart their business. Floral masterminds Simon Lycett, Elizabeth Cronin, and Maurice Harris host and judge, bringing their invaluable experience, discerning eyes, and hot takes to the flower shop to determine who will be the first-ever Full Bloom champion.

  • Wednesday, February 12, 7:00 pm – 8:30 pm – Valentines Day Floral Design

    Using flower and foliage that you might find in your own yard and garden, learn the basic techniques of floral design in this Massachusetts Horticultural Society holiday workshop led by Barbara Rietscha, owner of Field & Vase. The class will take place Wednesday, February 12 from 7 – 8:30 at The Gardens at Elm Bank, 900 Washington Street in Wellesley, and flowers and supplies will be provided.     Design a Williamsburg-inspired centerpiece for your holiday table. This Tower Hill Botanic Garden class on December 15 from 11:30 – 2 with Betsy Williams will sell out fast. Choose from a selection of fragrant fresh greens, fruits, seasonal berries and pinecones to create a beautiful holiday centerpiece in an attractive container. With proper care, your table arrangement will stay fresh and lovely for the entire holiday season. Please bring floral scissors and an apron to class.

    Betsy Williams teaches, lectures and writes about living with herbs and flowers. A gardener and herb grower since 1972, Betsy trained as a florist in Boston and England. She combines her floral and gardening skills with an extensive knowledge of history, plant lore and seasonal celebrations. Betsy is the author of several books on the uses and stories of herbs and flowers. She has appeared on the Discovery Channel and greater Boston cable stations as well as local and national radio talk shows.     Jimmy N. Guzman possesses an impressive breadth of experience in the hotel, catering, floral, and events industries having performed executive roles for various firms in and around Boston. His background includes: General Manager of a hotel and restaurant, Retail Manager for Winston Flowers‘ two acre flagship property in Chestnut Hill, Operations Manager for Off the Vine Catering, and Sales & Marketing Manager for an event design firm.

    JNG Event Consulting grew out of Jimmy’s immense desire to assist industry professionals with all aspects of event execution as well as to provide consultation on how to market their firms. Jimmy’s love of design and his love of people, lend passion to his work and he is able to contribute his expertise to events of all sizes.

    Jimmy is the recipient of a Bachelor of Science degree in Marketing and Communications from Boston College (cum laude), and a Master of Science degree in Economic Development and Tourism Management from Boston University. While at Boston University, Jimmy completed a certificate course at Rittners’ School of Floral Design and took courses towards a Certificate in Professional Cooking from Newbury College, where he also served as an adjunct professor teaching hotel industry Issues.
