  • Wednesday, December 2, 6:00 pm – Holiday Flowers with Global Appeal

    The Friendly Garden Club of Beverly presents A Traditional North Shore Holiday with floral designer Bert Ford on Tuesday, December 1 at the Cove Community Center, 19 East Corning Street in Beverly.     Would you like to learn how to create your own floral arrangements with “wow factor?” Have you ever walked through the floral design competitions at the Boston Flower & Garden Show or the Barnstable, Topsfield, or Marshfield Fairs and thought to yourself, “I could do this?” The Massachusetts Horticultural Society is ready to give you the tools to design your own arrangements!

    Beginning September 30 from 7 – 9 and continuing for six Wednesday evening sessions in The Parkman Room in the Education Building at Elm Bank, 900 Washington Street, Wellesley, you’ll learn the nuts and bolts of how the basics of floral design, you’ll even learn how to enter a competition. The class will cover the basics: how to choose a container, select plant material, and entering a design show. Expert designers will teach you the basic elements of the most popular classes of floral arrangement: traditional, creative, miniature and table design.

    Join the Garden Club Federation of Massachusetts for a series of interactive programs with distinguished Massachusetts designers, demonstrating how to create designs, on Mondays, October 6, November 3, and March 23, at The Espousal Center, 554 Lexington Street in Waltham. The classes will be held from 10 – 12, and the total fee for all three sessions is a mere $30.     Discover the essential elements and principles of floral design while creating three different styles of arrangements. You will learn how to achieve long-lasting freshness and select the perfect containers and flowers for the look you want to achieve. Seasonal flowers, foliage, and themes will be emphasized. At the end of each hands-on class, you will take home an arrangement you created to enjoy or give as a gift. A materials fee of $45 (cash or check only) is payable at the first class.   • Sunday, May 18, 12:00 noon – 5:00 pm – Petals & Palettes on a Sunday Afternoon

    Andover Garden Club’s Petals & Palettes On a Sunday Afternoon will feature artists, floral design, live music, art for sale, and appetizers and beverages. The event takes place Sunday, May 18, from noon until 5 at the Essex Art Center, Lower Level, 56 Island Street in Lawrence.

    More than 70 pieces from two score of the community’s best artists will be displayed, including sculpture, watercolor, oil painting, drawing, photography, mixed media, and fiber arts. Select pieces will be interpreted in floral arrangements à la “Art in Bloom.”

    Much of the artwork will be offered for sale, with a percentage of the proceeds going to support the work of the club.

    The exhibit of art and floral design will offer attendees a chance to take in the fragrance of fresh spring flowers, contemplate the colorful collection of art pieces, tap their feet to the tempo of a live jazz band, sample savory appetizers, and sip select beverages, including wine and beer.  $40 entrance fee.  For more information visit www.andovergardenclub.org, or call 978-475-7119.

    This fall Mass Hort will once again offer a six week course for anyone interested in learning the nuts and bolts of how to do a design for a flower show. This course is designed especially for those who would love to enter a flower show but are unsure of how to go about it or are timid and need support and encouragement. This course will be held in the Education Building at Elm Bank on Tuesday evenings from 7 to 9pm from September 17th through October 22nd.

    Cost – $100.00 for Massachusetts Horticultural Society members, $100.00 for non-members. Register on line at www.masshort.org.

    Instructor Laurie Marino will give a class at the Boston Center for Adult Education, 122 Arlington Street, on Saturday, October 13 from 10 – 12.  Tuition is $30 for BCAE members, $35 for non-members, and there is an additional materials cost of $18. Lose the bland bouquets and learn to create floral designs with flair! Using a step-by-step method, you will learn how to choose and process your flowers and what tools and containers work best to create arrangements that boast a distinctive visual appeal. We’ll explore the color, texture, and variety of spring flowers, and discuss the myriad styles of floral design, such as the English garden, Ikebana, symmetrical and asymmetrical design.  Register at www.bcae.org.

    Mass Hort is excited to offer a new program this fall for anyone interested in learning the nuts and bolts of how to do a design for a flower show. This course will be held in the Putnam Building at the Gardens at Elm Bank on Tuesday evenings from 7 to 9pm on the following dates:- 9/25, 10/2, 10/9, 10/16, 10/23 and 10/30. The first class will cover the basics of preparing and entering a show, choosing containers, and selecting plant material. Then, four classes will cover the most popular classes of design competition: traditional, creative, miniature, and craft. Then, for the final session, you’ll execute a design which will be critiqued by experts. The cost of the course is $60 for all 6 classes and will be filled on a first come, first served basis. There is a limit of 40 participants. You may register online or phone 617-933-4963 to register. Full payment must be made by the September 14thdeadline. This course is designed especially for those who would love to enter a flower show but are unsure of how to go about it or are timid and need support and encouragement.
