    The Old York Garden Club invites to public to attend its November meeting beginning at 1:00 pm on November 11 at the Fellowship Hall of the First Parish Church, 180 York Street in Old York, Maine.  Award winning master designer Mike Spanos will wow you with his unique approach to floral design.  His program is entitled “Fun with Flowers”.  He is a contributor and featured designer to the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, and is in the  midst of opening a fine arts gallery featuring works in various mediums by local artists.

    Donna Morrissey is a Master Flower Show Judge and former Chairman for Judges Council of National Garden Clubs.

    She is a Senior Associate of the Museum of Fine Arts and a Floral Designer and Design Instructor at the MFA.

    Donna is a member of the Garden Club of the Back Bay and the Wareham Garden Club. She is a popular presenter of Floral Design Programs and Workshops and has her own floral design business, Chestnut Hill Celebrations.

    The Gibson House Museum is the only museum in Back Bay, preserved as it was lived in by three generations of the Gibson family (1859-1954). The house opened as a museum in 1957, and tells the story of daily life in the Back Bay during the mid-nineteenth to early twentieth centuries.  The Museum also displays its collection of Victorian and Edwardian decorative arts.

    The Cambridge Center for Adult Education is pleased to announce a series of flower arranging seminars with the acclaimed Cass the Florist.  Ever wonder how to turn a bouquet of flowers from the grocery store or flowers from the garden into an elegant centerpiece? This course will teach you how to create your own beautiful flower arrangements. You will learn the essential elements and principals of floral design while creating three different arrangements. You will learn how to care for flowers to achieve long-lasting freshness, and how to select appropriate containers and flowers for the look you want to achieve. Seasonal flowers and foliage will be used and seasonal themes emphasized. This is a hands-on course and at the end of each class you will have a stylish arrangement to take home to enjoy or give as a gift. A materials fee of $30 (cash or check only) is payable at the first class. Limited to 10.

  • Tuesdays, October 6, 13, 20 & 27, 6:30 – 8:30 pm – Flower Design with Al DeLuca

    Tower Hill Botanic Garden in Boylston, Massachusetts is sponsoring a series of floral design workshops with Al DeLuca, A.I.F.D., A.A.F., Flor-Al’s Inc.

    On October 6, enjoy Designing with Fruits and Vegetables.  Fruits and vegetables add exciting color, texture and focal interest to a floral design.  Learn how to select produce, condition it, and place it in an arrangement for long lasting pleasure.

    October 13 brings a session entitled Autumn Arrangement.  Incorporating the bounty of color in New England, participants will create a beautiful arrangement utilizing the richly hued floral product available during the autumn season.

    The next workshop, Trans-seasonal Arrangement, takes place on October 27. This class is designed to help you make an arrangement that will be appropriate for Thanksgiving and can be transitioned into Christmas.  The arrangement will include both fresh and permanent materials.

    The World Association of Flower Arrangers announces that the United States of America is the host country of WAFA, responsible for  three years of floral activity.  The 10th World Flower Show will culminate in a four day event at the World Trade Center here in Boston, June 15 – June 19, 2011.   • Tuesday, October 27, 8:30 am – 3:15 pm – Garden Club Federation of Massachusetts Fall Conference

    Please Join Garden Club Federation of Massachusetts President Linda Jean Smith on Tuesday, October 27, for the Fall Conference entitled “Evergreen.”  The Fall Conference will be held this year at the Andover Country Club, 60 Canterbury Street, Andover, Massachusetts.

    The day will begin at 8:30 am with registration, coffee and boutique shopping.  At 9:00, your choice of workshops will begin: “Coffee with a Master Gardener,” “Plant Native with Meg Moore,” and “So You Were Elected Treasurer, Help!”

    At 10:00, President Smith will call the official meeting to order.  Sandra Sears and Joyce Bakshi will speak on planning and planting a Children’s Garden, and Janet Macunovich of the Practical Gardening Institute and the University of Michigan will speak on “The Collector – Engaging Harmony from Intriguing Diversity.”  The speech will be followed by a social hour and more boutique shopping, then the Awards Luncheon and Presentation of Awards.

    At 2:15, the final presentation will be “The Horticulture of Design,” a floral design program with award winning designers showing and explaining Tapestry, Pot-Et-Fleur, Collections vs. Displays, and more.

    To register, send your name, address, telephone, email, Club affiliation, and a check made out to GCFM,Inc. to Yvonne Capella, 16 Bell’s Brook Road, Lakeville, MA 02347.  The cost is $30 for the lunch (please note chicken or fish on your check), $15 for the morning program, and $3 for one of the morning workshops (again, please specify Master Gardener, Plant Native, or Treasurer).   • Friday and Saturday, October 23 and 24 – Garden Gate Magazine Program at The Sagamore

    This program generated a lot of interest when it was initially scheduled for March 2009. But due to the massive renovations the resort was undertaking, the program was rescheduled for October 23 & 24, 2009. The Sagamore’s multi-million dollar facelift will provide the perfect setting for an unforgettable gardening event. Overnight package and day only rates are available.

Features include top plant picks; detailed garden plans; maintenance tricks and techniques; featured gardens used to illustrate design tips; what’s new in garden products and plants; how-to-do or build fun projects; and much more.     The program kicks off 7:00 p.m. Friday night (October 23rd) with a lively PowerPoint presentation by Lindsay Irish, a history buff and specialist on The Sagamore’s fascinating history. A gourmet dinner in the newly renovated Trillium Restaurant follows. Saturday the fun continues with five lively gardening talks:

    *The Art and Science of the Perennial Landscape. Designing a successful landscape with
    perennials involves both art and science. Horticulturist and avid gardeners, Dr. Leonard Perry will discuss and illustrate through photos of various garden settings the aesthetic considerations and habitat considerations (the “science”) when choosing and placing flowers. Best plant growth with the least maintenance, and fewest problems, is in large part a result of picking the right plant for the right environmental habitat. The common garden habitats, with some representative and choice perennials for each, will be featured.
    *The Art of Shade Gardening – Seeing Your Way Out of the Dark. Kerry Mendez will introduce
    you to some perennials, flowering shrubs, and annuals that steal the show in less than sunny
    areas. Discussion includes design tips and as well how to care for low-maintenance gardens.
    *Some of the Newest and Best Annual Flowers. Dr. Perry has managed the All-America
    Selections Flower display garden in Burlington, Vermont for 25 years. He’ll illustrate some of
    the best of the flowers, as well as some of the best new introductions (including perennials
    disguised as annuals), for outstanding performance in colder climates. Learn some tips on
    combining the many choices available through viewing some eye-catching examples.
    *Garden Thugs in Disguise. As an undercover agent on the lookout for garden thugs being
    promoted as valued perennials, Kerry Mendez will blow the whistle on plants that become
    maintenance nightmares despite what the plant tags tell you. Some of these impersonators
    may surprise you. She’ll also share how to corral the ones already in your gardens and
    give some helpful trade secrets on jump-starting gardens in the spring.
    *Floral Design with Flare! Join Tanya Sawn as she shows you how to make incredible
    floral arrangements for your home as well as unique gifts. Tanya does all of the floral displays
    for The Sagamore’s grandiose hotel and special events. The talk includes a tour of the resort’s
    new floral workshop.

    Dr. Perry

    is the Greenhouse and Nursery Extension Specialist for the University of Vermont. He is a frequent guest on the television show Across the Fence as well as on the radio. Professor Perry, along with graduate students, has an active research program on all aspects of perennial production and overwintering. Communities across the U.S. have met him through his past role as a judge for the America in Bloom program. Dr. Perry is becoming known across North America for his internet web site– Perry’s Perennial Pages (www.perrysperennials.com) which features information, links, news articles, research and more on herbaceous perennials.

    If you’ve never stayed at The Sagamore before, you’re in for a treat. Even if you have, you’re still in for a surprise when you see the completed multi-million dollar renovations.     If you are a member of the Museum of Fine Arts (and we hope all our Garden Club members will consider joining if not already a member), drop in to the Riley Seminar Room on Wednesday, October 7, between 1 pm and 2:30, and get fresh ideas on how to realize the fine art of floral arranging.  Members of the MFA’s acclaimed flower team (again, some of our own members are counted among these talented designers) will share tips and an abundance of creative ideas.  The event is free, open on a first-come, first-served basis.  Accompanying guests are admitted subject to the general admission privileges of your membership.  Please have your MFA membership card available for check-in.  For more information, log on to www.mfa.org.

    What better way than to end your day at Tower Hill Botanic Garden, 11 French Drive, Boylston, Massachusetts, than with a floral design class? Instructor Al DeLuca will discuss floral design theory, give inside tips, and walk you through the steps in creating your own beautiful floral arrangement to take home! Beginner to advanced.
    Taking inspiration from nature, this class will teach you how to interpret what you see outdoors in floral design to bring a bit of nature indoors.

    Al DeLuca is accredited in floral design by the American Institute of Floral Designers and has been recognized for his outstanding contribution to the floral industry by the American Academy of Floriculture. His designs have been featured in both the Philadelphia and Boston Flower Shows. His mastery of floriculture ranges from contemporary to traditional and European styles.
