  • Tuesday, October 11, 10:00 am – 12:00 noon – Design Workshop with Donna Morrissey

    Tuesday, October 11 will be the first class in a three part workshop with Garden Club of the Back Bay member Donna Morrissey.  The following two sessions will take place Tuesday, January 17 (snow date Wednesday, January 18), and Tuesday, April 10, 2012.  All three programs will be held from 10 – noon at the Espousal Center, 554 Lexington Street, North Waltham, Massachusetts, and are intended for beginning and intermediate flower arrangers.  The fee for all three sessions is $125, which includes all materials and instruction.  No refunds if you are unable to attend, although you may designate someone to attend in your place, or ask a friend who is attending to collect your flowers and container at the end of the class.  You need to supply clippers, notebook, and a clean-up bag.  Please mail your check, made out to GCFM,Inc. to Donna at 143 Commonwealth Avenue, Newton, MA 02467.

    You may have missed the Boston Center for Adult Education’s Thanksgiving floral arrangement workshop, but there is still time to sign up for the Christmas workshop on Saturday, December 11, from 10 – 1, taught by Laurie Marino. Learn how to make professional looking arrangements in this fun Christmas workshop. Fresh flowers, pine cones, and fragrant evergreens will be used to create a long-lasting arrangement for your home or to give as a gift. Everyone will say “you made this”?     The Cambridge Center for Adult Education is pleased to announce a series of flower arranging seminars with the acclaimed Cass the Florist.  Ever wonder how to turn a bouquet of flowers from the grocery store or flowers from the garden into an elegant centerpiece? This course will teach you how to create your own beautiful flower arrangements. You will learn the essential elements and principals of floral design while creating three different arrangements. You will learn how to care for flowers to achieve long-lasting freshness, and how to select appropriate containers and flowers for the look you want to achieve. Seasonal flowers and foliage will be used and seasonal themes emphasized. This is a hands-on course and at the end of each class you will have a stylish arrangement to take home to enjoy or give as a gift. A materials fee of $45 (cash or check only) is payable at the first class. Limited to 10.

  • Wednesdays, January 20, 27, and February 3, 7:00 – 9:00 pm – Flower Arranging: Simple and Tasteful

    Indoor floral arrangements during the winter months are most successful when you incorporate flowers or branches that are interesting to look at. Winter is not the season to focus on bunches of blooming flowers, but rather to create airy, simple, and tasteful arrangements. In this class you will discuss  choices for long-lasting winter arrangements, the use of unusual vases, and which flowers will work best. You’ll practice a variety of floral arrangement styles, using everyday and unusual flowers and branches for tall and thin, or short and subtle looks. You will discuss equipment and reference materials used by florists, how to pair your arrangement with a room, and how to best care for your flowers before, during, and after they have been arranged. Please bring a few vases, a pair of scissors, glue sticks, and a glue gun to class. The instructor will provide the fresh flowers and branches, low-floral dishes, floral tape, and wires. A $50 materials fees is payable to the instructor at the first class.  This series of three classes, to be held Wednesday January 20, January 27, and February 3 at Brookline High School, is sponsored by Brookline Adult Education, and the fee for the three classes is $85.  You may register on line at www.brooklineadulted.org, or by calling 617-730-2700.

  • Tuesdays, October 6, 13, 20 & 27, 6:30 – 8:30 pm – Flower Design with Al DeLuca

    Tower Hill Botanic Garden in Boylston, Massachusetts is sponsoring a series of floral design workshops with Al DeLuca, A.I.F.D., A.A.F., Flor-Al’s Inc.

    On October 6, enjoy Designing with Fruits and Vegetables.  Fruits and vegetables add exciting color, texture and focal interest to a floral design.  Learn how to select produce, condition it, and place it in an arrangement for long lasting pleasure.

    October 13 brings a session entitled Autumn Arrangement.  Incorporating the bounty of color in New England, participants will create a beautiful arrangement utilizing the richly hued floral product available during the autumn season.

    The next workshop, Trans-seasonal Arrangement, takes place on October 27. This class is designed to help you make an arrangement that will be appropriate for Thanksgiving and can be transitioned into Christmas.  The arrangement will include both fresh and permanent materials.

  • Tuesday, October 27, 8:30 am – 3:15 pm – Garden Club Federation of Massachusetts Fall Conference

    Please Join Garden Club Federation of Massachusetts President Linda Jean Smith on Tuesday, October 27, for the Fall Conference entitled “Evergreen.”  The Fall Conference will be held this year at the Andover Country Club, 60 Canterbury Street, Andover, Massachusetts.

    The day will begin at 8:30 am with registration, coffee and boutique shopping.  At 9:00, your choice of workshops will begin: “Coffee with a Master Gardener,” “Plant Native with Meg Moore,” and “So You Were Elected Treasurer, Help!”

    At 10:00, President Smith will call the official meeting to order.  Sandra Sears and Joyce Bakshi will speak on planning and planting a Children’s Garden, and Janet Macunovich of the Practical Gardening Institute and the University of Michigan will speak on “The Collector – Engaging Harmony from Intriguing Diversity.”  The speech will be followed by a social hour and more boutique shopping, then the Awards Luncheon and Presentation of Awards.

    At 2:15, the final presentation will be “The Horticulture of Design,” a floral design program with award winning designers showing and explaining Tapestry, Pot-Et-Fleur, Collections vs. Displays, and more.

    To register, send your name, address, telephone, email, Club affiliation, and a check made out to GCFM,Inc. to Yvonne Capella, 16 Bell’s Brook Road, Lakeville, MA 02347.  The cost is $30 for the lunch (please note chicken or fish on your check), $15 for the morning program, and $3 for one of the morning workshops (again, please specify Master Gardener, Plant Native, or Treasurer).   • Wednesdays, September 23 – October 14, 7 -9 pm – Inexpensive and Beautiful Flower Arrangements

    If you would like to learn the secrets behind the creation of stunning floral arrangements, this part traditional, part contemporary course is for you. Through Brookline Community Education, you’ll be introduced to simple flower arrangement concepts, and learn the basics as a creative platform. You will learn about the wide variety of seasonal choices available, properties and shapes of cut flowers and branches, and how to arrange impressive animal or unusual centerpieces in cost effective ways. We will discuss equipment and reference materials used by florists, and how to best care for your flowers before, during, and after they have been arranged. Please bring a pair of scissors, glue sticks, and a glue gun to class. The instructor will provide fresh flowers, oasis, low-floral dishes, floral tape, and wires. A $50 materials fees is payable to the instructor at the first class. The class will be held at Brookline High School, and is limited to 16 attendees.   • Wednesday, October 14, 10:00 – 12 noon – Designing Principles

    Please join The Garden Club Federation of Massachusetts for a series of three interactive design lecture/demonstrations on flower arranging at The Espousal Center, 554 Lexington Street, Waltham, Massachusetts.  The first session will be Wednesday, October 14, the second will take place Wednesday, January 27, 2010, and the final session will be on Wednesday, April 28, 2010.  Massachusetts designers, among the best in the country, will teach you what they do and how they do it – top secrets are often revealed.  Reservations are being accepted on  a first come, first served basis, and must be made in writing.  The total fee for all three sessions is $25 (what a deal!).  Make your check out to GCFM,Inc., and mail it with your name, address, telephone number, email address, and Garden Club affiliation to Robin Murphy, PO Box 3263, Wareham, MA 02571.  There is a registration deadline of October 1, so get on to this right now.
