    James Beard Award-winning chef Eric Ripert returns to CitySpace on October 23 at 6:30 to discuss his new cookbook, Mindful Cooking with Morning Edition host Tiziana Dearing. In this inspiring exploration of food, health and gratitude, Ripert shares how cooking can become an act of mindfulness and connection by drawing on his travels to Buddhist monasteries across Japan and Korea, as well as his own culinary traditions.   • Friday, October 9, 4:00 pm – Conversations with Great American Gardeners: Karen Washington, Online

    The American Horticultural Society is pleased to announce our new speaker series featuring current and past Great American Gardeners Award Winners and Book Award Winners. Since 1953, the AHS has been recognizing and celebrating horticultural champions that represent the best in American gardening and we are thrilled to soon launch a new dedicated webinar series to highlight these outstanding individuals.  

    The first conversation in the series will launch Friday, October 8, with Karen Washington, an award-winning urban farmer and food justice activist who was the recipient of the 2018 Urban Beautification Award. Karen has been a community gardener and activist in New York City since 1985. As a New York Botanical Garden trustee, she currently works with Bronx neighborhoods to turn empty lots into gardens. In her earlier role as an advocate and former president of the New York City Community Garden Coalition, she championed garden protection and preservation. She’s also active with the La Familia Verde Garden Coalition, helping to launch a City Farms Market to bring fresh vegetables to the community. She serves as a board member of organizations such as Why Hunger and Just Food, often leading workshops on food justice and growing food. Washington is also a co-owner and farmer at Rise & Root Farm. In 2012, Ebony magazine voted her one of the 100 most influential African Americans in the country. In 2014, she was the recipient of the James Beard Leadership Award.

    Host Holly Shimizu, former executive director of the United States Botanic Garden and an AHS board member, will lead the conversation, which you won’t want to miss!

Walsh of the City of Boston, and member of the Gesgapegiag Mi’kmaq tribe in Quebec, Canada and the first indigenous person in a Cabinet-level position at Boston City Hall, we will hear from Chef Sean Sherman. Chef Sherman is a member of the Oglala Lakota tribe, co-founder of The Sioux Chef, a 2019 James Beard Leadership Award winner, and author of The Sioux Chef’s Indigenous Kitchen.     After Allandale Farm’s sold out 2017 events, the folks from Mei Mei food truck & restaurant are throwing another dinner party with Allandale Farm, located at 259 Allandale Road in Boston.
    We both love local food, fun times, urban farms, music, craft beer, and our friends and neighbors, so we’re putting it all together on the nights of Sunday September 30 and Sunday October 21.     The Trustees of Reservations and The KITCHEN at the Boston Public Market are honored to welcome James Beard Award Winner and Top Chef Masters contestant Chef Jody Adams for a very special hands-on cooking experience. In Chef Adams’ class, attendees will learn the traditional Greek cuisine that has people lining up for her newest restaurants, Saloniki, in Boston and Cambridge. She will also draw on techniques and flavors of her other popular restaurants, Trade, Porto, and formerly, Rialto. Join us to cook side-by-side with one of Boston’s most prestigious chef heroes who is committed to highlighting New England’s local farmers, fishermen and artisans on her menus.

    In this lively, hands-on cooking class you’ll learn how to utilize the produce and products of the farmers and artisans of the Boston Public Market.     The renowned James Beard Foundation is coming to Boston. On Friday, November 3 beginning at 6 pm at the Taj Boston, enjoy a dinner created by Taste America All-Star Daniel Boulud of Bar Boulud (New York City), Local Star Karen Akunowicz of Myers + Chang (Boston), Pastry Chef Maura Kilpatrick of Oleana Restaurant (Cambridge), and Host Gurminder Gidda of Taj Boston (Boston).  Reception Tastings created by Carolyn Johnson of 80 Thoreau (Concord), Michael Lombardi and Kevin O’Donnell of SRV (Boston), Juan Pedrosa of Yvonne’s (Boston), Cassie Piuma of Sarma (Somerville), and Marc Sheehan of Loyal Nine (Cambridge). The Guest Master of Ceremony is Jenny Johnson, Producer and Co-Host of NESN’s Dining Playbook.

On Saturday, November 4 at 10:00 am, Daniel Boulud will conduct a cooking demonstration at Sur La Table at Copley Place, followed by a book signing at 11.  At noon, Karen Akunowicz will take over for another hour of cooking demonstrations, and she will sign books at 1 pm. Tickets are essential since space is limited, and reservations will be taken at www.jamesbeard.org starting Friday, October 20.

  • Saturday, June 8, 4:00 pm – Tasting Terroir: A Story of Earth, Wine, and Human Hope

    Consider the role of terroir throughout the history of wine. While highlighting the essential role of earth in the terroir that many people believe characterizes fine wine, author Paul Lukacs and wine merchant Jim Nejames will present a lecture and tasting. Based on his new book, Inventing Wine: a New History of One of The World’s Most Ancient Pleasures, Paul will present the intriguing investigation of terroir: its facts and fictions. Wines featured will demonstrate the significance of terroir. Paul’s new book will be sold following the lecture, and showcased wines will be available for order.

    Paul Lukacs is the author of American Vintage and The Great Wines of America. A James Beard, Cliquot and IACP award winner, he has been writing about wine and its cultural contexts for nearly 20 years. He is a professor of English at Loyola University of Maryland, where he directs the University’s Center for the Humanities. Jim Nejames, a wine merchant, owns Spirited, a retail wine store located in Lenox, MA. He finds and sells great wines from around the world and specializes in wine consulting, stocking wine cellars, wine classes and wine tastings.

    There’s nothing better than settling into a nice, warm, home-cooked meal at the kitchen table. Kathy Gunst takes us into her own kitchen, introducing us to the flavors of fresh, seasonal Maine ingredients prepared in simple and inspiring ways. With essays conveying the mood of each month, Gunst gives readers a sense of Maine food and life. She follows each essay with a handful of recipes incorporating the seasonal ingredient or theme. Hear her speak on Wednesday, April 11, beginning at 7 pm at Porter Square Books, 25 White Street in Cambridge.

    Gunst lives in South Berwick, Maine. She is the author of thirteen cookbooks; her most recent books include Stonewall Kitchen Breakfast, Stonewall Kitchen Winter Celebrations, Stonewall Kitchen Grilling, and Stonewall Kitchen Appetizers. She is also the “Resident Chef” for WBUR’s award winning show, Here and Now, heard on over 60 public radio stations nationwide. She has received two James Beard award nominations for her radio work.
