  • Wednesday, March 19, 6:00 pm – 8:00 pm – Deer-resistant Landscaping

The Ecological Landscape Alliance and the New England Wild Flower Society will co-sponsor Deer-resistant Landscaping with landscape designer Kathy Connolly on Wednesday, March 19, from 6 – 8 at the Native Plant Center at Nasami Farm, 128 North Street in Whately, Massachusetts. Take your landscape off the menu at the deer café. There is no such thing as a deer-proof plant, but some plants come close. In this seminar, landscape designer Kathy Connolly presents ideas that will help your landscape become a “deer survivor.” Learn about the products that work and how to select the best plants for deer resistance, with special emphasis on our New England natives. We will also review fence ideas and their relative value. We will touch on strategies for managing other uninvited critters as well. Registrations are limited. $24 for ELA and NEWFS members, $29 for nonmembers.  To register call 617-436-5838 or visit https://www.eventville.com/catalog/eventregistration1.asp?eventid=1010932.

  • Saturday, June 29, 10:00 am – 2:00 pm – Nasami Farm Perched Swamp Tree Exploration

Nasami Farm, owned by the New England Wildflower Society, is home to a unique habitat, a Black Gum—Pin Oak—Swamp White Oak “perched” swamp. This is a swamp not directly connected to the water table, but perched above it on layers that prevent draining usually associated with old glacial lake beds. The Great Swamp, of which this property is a part, is one of the largest and best examples of a perched swamp left in Massachusetts. On Saturday, June 29, from 10 – 2, we will be looking mostly at the trees and their bark, but also checking out any wildflowers we might see. The trail is level and the distance covered about 2 to3 miles at an easy pace. Please bring comfortable water-resistant boots, rain gear (depending on the weather), plenty of water, lunch, binoculars and bug spray. We will be using the book Bark by Michael Wojtech, so bring a copy if you have one. We will meet at Nasami Farm, 128 North Street, in Whately (there is a blue sign on routes 5 & 10 at Swamp Road). Parking will be at the barn on the left as you enter. Directions will be sent upon request at pre-registration when you email Nancy Goodman at wildeyes@rcn.com. $5 fee, free for Pioneer Valley Institute members, NEWFS members, and kids under 12. (Please do not use MapQuest for driving directions; they currently take you to North Street in South Deerfield.)

  • Saturday, June 12, 10:00 am – 12:00 noon – Container Gardening With Native Plants

Forget the petunias and potato vines; create container plantings using native perennials adapted to our New England winters. Container plantings add accents to your outdoor spaces whether large or small. Learn which natives are ideal for containers and how to combine them effectively. First, explore design elements, container and plant selection, lighting requirements, temperature, growing media, irrigation, fertilization, over-wintering, and long-term maintenance. Then assemble and plant your own container under the instructor’s guidance.  BYOC–bring your own container. The class fee includes potting mix, fertilizer and mulch for your container. Plants will be available for sale at a discount to class participants that day.  The workshop will be held simultaneously in two locations. Find out how they share the land with a varietyof animal species including bluebirds, bobolinks, turtles, insects and more, all happy to enjoy the Nasami habitat. Ron is currently focused on increasing production efficiencies, expanding the selection of species of known provenance, improving the sustainability of production practices, and seeking out new and exciting plants to grow for the Society.  This program enhances The Garden Club of the Back Bay’s year long exploration of The Ethical Gardner, and you are encouraged to attend.  The program is free. • Sunday, September 13, 10 am – 3 pm – Mastering Asters – Nasami Farm Workshop

Asters can be among the more difficult species of native plants to identify in the field, for both amateurs and professionals. However, they are an important family of plants to know, for they comprise a substantial proportion of the late summer and fall-blooming herbaceous flora of our region. They’re also beautiful and have an exquisite structure which makes them exciting to study.

This workshop will focus on identifying 15-20 of the most common species – the ones most likely to be found in the wild most of the time. A field trip to a natural area close to the classroom will follow a two-hour lab.

Please note that this subject is somewhat technical. An identification key and other handouts will be provided. Bring hand lens, bag lunch, and wear hiking boots for damp conditions.
